Congratulations! My husband and I went through something similar. He proposed after 7 years of dating. But because he's from the Caribbean and I'm a U.S. citizen, most of my family had their stereotypical opinions about him and would usually say things that still make him uncomfortable to be around them. I'm a huge family oriented person and love my family, but I completely understand where he's coming from. There are people in his family I feel the same way about. When he proposed, we only told some of our very immediate family and my 2 best friends. Longer story short, we've been married almost 2 years now, and some of them still don't know we're married. But that's a decision we thought was best. Because we didn't have a huge ceremony...(we had 5 people in our living room and never made a post about it) when couples at our church breakup, most people think it was us. My point is that there are times you will have to make tough decisions like that. It works for us, and hopefully, y'all aren't too hard on yourselves about it. Focus on each other and your marriage. Praying that your marriage is beautiful, strong, and everlasting.
That’s an amazing story! That’s definitely a difficult place to be in. Obviously we all know what the thoughts are but you’re right. F*** what they think. You’re absolutely right. This experience helped me realize that things won’t always be as we want it and some people will never agree with your decision but the most important thing is to love each other and remember that’s it’s for us together and not them.
