Varanasi is an eternal city, because, as I learnt, it is the city of Lord Mahadev.
It is a city of very learned and enlightened citizens, steeped in tradition while marching forward to embrace modernity.
The tradition of performing arts, manufacture of silk fabrics, world class carpet weaving, inter faith tolerance, and of course it cuisine are all beyond compare.
I learnt from well informed people that Varanasi is considered as a celestial city, unlike Prayagraj, Haridwar, Gaya, Pushkar, Pehowa and a few others which are considered as terrestrial cities. Hence in our Hindu tradition "Pind Daan' of our departed family members is done in the terrestrial cities only and not in Varanasi. Am I correctly informed?
The citizens of the great city of Varanasi have a philosophical attitude towards life, and death. The lanes leading to Manikarnika Ghat bear testimony to that great quality of the local residents. Even while an almost endless line of mortal remains is carried to Manikarnika Ghat for cremation, life bustles along in these lanes. The people learn fortitude, resilience and stoicism from an early age. They go about their daily routine of life, while being quietly respectful of those who are performing their final journey on Mother Earth.
We had probably the best Thandai ever in Varanasi and we discovered the best mithai shop in a cul-de- sac in the lane leading down to Dashaswamedha Ghat. I wish I had noted the name of that shop. And I sincerely hope that Lord Mahadev will give us another opportunity to visit His capital city.
