You asked “what have I done” … I’ll give you my opinion: you have hit the restorers’ jackpot, my friend. That set is absolutely amazing. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Manuel, Wow ! Such a comment from you also makes my day and confirms i made the right decision getting this set despite my original hesitation because it only goes up to 100 MHz. I'm just about to post part 2 and with any luck it should be online mid arvo. As you can imagine I've learned so much working on this radio, i mean although the basic working principle is the same, man is the tone shaping arranged differently, hence why the remote isn't just an on/off volume control device, it's half of the tone shaping circuit and where all the pre set buttons sit. Very interesting design i must say. Thank you so very much for the comment, i can't wait to finish this one so i can go bak enjoying your channel more, sometimes i even understand what you're talking about :-) Thank you so very much for your contribution to our community.

That remote is really neat. To think that something so old has a remote (all be it wired) is amazing and with eq control. You are lucky to know its back story and have the original paperwork. That is an amazing find.

Absolutely and i forgot to reply, yes it is a remote in the sense that you can turn the radio on and off with it as well as adjust the volume, but its true purpose is to house half of the tone shaping circuitry, those pre-sets like you say. That's exactly right my friend.

Its a beauty, top of the Grundig line with so many features. Wondering how the first buyer was impressed when he saw it in a showroom in Germany all those years ago. The tape player and turntable all make a nice music system. Looking forward to the restoration.🐞

Thank you so much Mohabat, Yeah, i asked myself the same question when I first got the radio on the bench, I mean it's 2024 i have a ton of modern and vintage audio gear and this guy just blow my mind, i can just imagine how proud the original owner must have been when he got it home and first turned it on. It must have been his pride and joy and quite the conversation starter. I hope i can restore it to it's former glory, it is screaming for it on my bench :-)

@@raymondmenard5444 Back in the 1950's, my dad bought a Telefunken radio. This was in Uganda, and my mum used to put my baby cot next to it to be lulled to sleep listening to it. Then as a child I remember seeing all the dials, knobs and buttons on it, and some of the station music, there was BBC, radio India, I think we even got a station in Fiji because it had a distinct station music that later on I heard the Fiji people sing.
Then about 5 years ago, I saw a similar Telefunken for sale online and I bought it. It is the 'Opus' series, which looks near to our old radio in Africa. I will get it going some day, it has sentimental value for me. Telefunken, like Grundig, Blaupunkt, Phillips were good quality electronic products much loved all over the world. 🐞

What a breast of a radio Raymond. I did 'may ask' why there are two FMs, unbelievable, they duplicated the FM tuners! 😲 That would have been one of the most expensive radios at the time. The tape recorder, record player , hand made cabinet, remote, microphone and booklet are the icing on the cake. Well done you 👏👍😀

David my friend thank you so much for dropping by, you just summed up my thoughts exactly. I must say i have been very lucky lately, once again leaving the seller's house with this beauty in the car boot, i felt a bit lousy; Should i have offered more ? Will the gentleman have seller's remorse letting such great memories of his father go ? I kept asking myself for an hour on my way back. The only way i can honour the original owner's memory is by working as hard as i can and applying all that you have taught me along with Manuel on this restoration. I am confident i can get it working again, but as far as the tape recorder goes, I really don't know if I'll be able to fix it. I know nothing about those devices and the seems to be some belts missing. We'll see i guess, perhaps i'll yank your chain again my friend. Again thank you for your comment, what a great sight to wake up to 🙂

Raymond this is the most beautiful radio I have ever seen my friend. The spoiled part of me wants to hear it play some music right now. Oh what a glorious sound this is going to produce. I can’t wait to see every episode of this. Thank you for sharing.

Why thank you Robb, i admit I fell in love with it just by watching the seller's picture. Yeah, I know what you mean, i have the footage (and audio) of it working but ,i need to re-shoot the final/reveal as my overhead LEDs have gone yellow. That's one more reason to hate LEDs, but I'll save my rant for another day. Also you won't want to miss part 6 where i clean the grill cloth, been wanting to try this technique out for a while and it just might be useful for your 2220 resto :-)

@@raymondmenard5444holy cow you finished shooting the entire restoration already? You way way way Northerners don’t sleep do you? Lol. I’m patiently awaiting my parts to arrive from Canada. Go figure right. I look forward to the grill cleaning. I already have the compressor so. Honestly I love your videos and have watched them several times each now. Each time I pick up more useful information. Keep them coming my friend. Btw: you need a crane to move that radio? It’s huge.

@@robbo6460 Yeah Robb it gets so cold here we can't stop moving, sleep is out of the question lol. Seriously since i'm retired i can spend 12 hours in a day working on my radios and not feel guilty about it. Since I don't have a wife either, heck nobody criticizes me for doing it. As for the Grill cloth be careful with the air pressure, don't exceed 40 or 50pis otherwise you'll split the fibres on the material. Yeah, this guy waighs-in at over 46 pds, probably closer to 47 now the new bigger tweeters are in... Oh and thank you for looping my videos, no wonder my view count is going up so fast ha ha ha.

it's all gold plated brass the corrosion occurs when the lacquered layer wears off and the very fine micro gold plating wears off. Both are so fine it's very easy to just polish off to the brass which can just look better on a very corroded radio but without a protective layer on top it will tarnish again. The microphone is also gold plated this is because of breath and it being more exposed to damp air when talking into it. I have read all this in the brochures over the years I believe they dropped mentioning the gold plated brights because of how thin it was..

Just to note the top of the range model at the time your radio was made was the Grundig 9060W/3D this would have been based on almost the same chassis design but with an EC92 I think for a preamp for the record player. The very general rule is the higher the 2 digits in the model number ie the 20/30/40/50 etc the higher spec on that radio... They fitted the remote control input sockets on some and not on others, I came to the conclusion it must have been not popular enough of an option that even on the higher spec machines its not always fitted! just luck of the draw.. Later on they added proprietary speaker sockets for there own range of loud speakers to compliment the 3D sound range. The 3D Sound and Klang Register designs all got quite sophisticated by the late 50s early 60s and Grundig were at the top of the game in FM technology and development at that time. I can leave a set switched off for months go back and turn it on and its precisely on point where I left it and never needs the tuning adjusting they are that dialed in on FM. What can let them down is the carbon tracking on the sliding switch bank if your unlucky

This sir is the best explanation i have read so far. Thank you so much, so in a way i was right there was an original plating and some sort of protective coating. It makes perfect sense in that respect the gold trims on the knobs are so much worse than the cabinet's trims. I'll remember this for sure, you just made a meaningful contribution to this channel and i thank you from the bottom of my heart for it. Have a great day God bless you:-)

@@Vintage-Tech Very very interesting, thank's for ''Schooling'' me. The remote's true purpose is to house half of the tone shaping circuitry and pre-set buttons. I suppose it uncrowded the chassis quite a bit, but from what i can tell this remote with it's 20 ft cable does introduce more hum, perhaps that's why they didn't stick with it. I maybe wrong though, don't cite me on this. Again thank you for sharing all this, i feel smarter now that i know :-)
Additional: Gee Edward, i'm sorry i didn't recognize your channel's name and didn't make the connection it was you. Everything you say about the Grundigs is pure gold to me, you're the resident expert here for sure 🙂

What a great radio and i am looking forward to watching the whole process unfold. I own a grundig arundel 8055 w / 3d which is an all in one radio, tape recorder and record player similar to what you have their only without the remote. I am assuming that the twim fm tuners is so that you can tune each to a different station and use them basically as presets as each is individually tuneable. Mine is currently unrestored and i understand that the tweeters often fail but they can be taken apart and repaired. There are videos on you tube about that. Well done, a good start on this excellent job.

Hello again SwingBand, yes i know about the Arundel, although I have never seen one in the wild. It is absolutely the same machines but just combined together, you're very lucky to own one. As far as the electrostatic tweeters go, i have explained on your other great comment that i have never had success fixing them, but at this point i will venture to say it's not worth trying to fix them simply because even in working condition they produce very little output. But that is just my very personal opinion. You can of course attempt it and maybe you'll have better luck with them than i have, and yeah, i have watched every tutorial on the matter, but it still didn't work for me. Part 3 should be available tomorrow morning after my 1st coffee 🙂Are you from New-Zealand mate ? If so you must know David Tipton, my mentor and spiritual twin brother lol

@raymondmenard5444 the arundel was a lucky find and is a project waiting to be worked on at the moment. I saw it and couldn't resist it. A mono radiogram but with two 12 inch speakers, two tweeters and two mid range speakers. The work you are doing with your grundig is inspiring me to kick start work on mine. Your experience with the tweeters is very helpful and I may just replace mine if after one attempt I have no luck. I lived in NZ for 7 years but now live in the UK. David's name is familiar but I've never met him but have heard of him by his excellent reputation only.
