Congratulations to you. I hope you do too... it was beautiful to watch... the look of (totally understandable) pride on Dan’s face at times was lovely to watch. Further evidence, if more was needed, that Dan’s a truly nice guy.

You are already on your way. All you have to do is be happy, healthy and be there when she is ready. Just posted similar sentiment about my own daughter. My son is just hinting he wants to play, and that is about as happy as I have ever been.

Quite a bit of Donald Fagen in that intro at 11:10, Brilliant stuff, and congrats Liv. And yeah, the bending control, expressivity and musicality that Andy has is just out of this world, jaw drops every time.

is it wrong that my favourite part was watching your daughters eyes light up during her solo with you when it all clicked in for her. As a dad myself I live for those moments. My daughter also prefers the tele design. wonderful that you shared this. thanks Dan.

I only just now finished this. Holy Hell, what a smoking jam. This virtual band idea has been a gift to the world during this time. Please keep it up. It may be sort of path forward. So many folks have done wonderful things around the world that might not have been I intuitive enough before. Compared to what & where we have all had to gig on our lives, we are at an age where the gear is all very good - and this is all possible.

Olivia was brilliant. Congrats Olivia. And that is a great way to teach the pentatonic, Dan. I never thought of singing the notes, so thanks for that.
I do not think I will ever be capable of hearing notes and chords simply with visualizing them, but I am going to have a go.
    Congrats on your improvement, Dan.
    Many thanks.

The first solo I learned was the solo from "Patience" by GnR. Then I learned maybe a couple others and hated the process. And then one day I was playing rhythm guitar and my buddy was soloing over "old love" by Clapton. I said "man, I wish I knew the solo" and he was like "oh, I just make it up". And I was like "how?" He showed me the A minor pentatonic box at the 5th fret and said "the song is in A minor, and this is the A minor pentatonic. So just play notes from this scale and they'll work". And then that night I went home, put on "Old Love", and started picking out notes from the pentatonic over it....I was blown away. IT WAS MUSIC! lol That really got me hooked, to hear myself actually *making* music. Then I stopped learning any solos, which I didn't learn many, but I thought "why learn other people's solos when I could be spending that time learning *how* to make my own solos, that are just as good or better"? Now, I don't fully subscribe to that anymore, but I do think it's the reason I advanced so quickly over my peers. In two years, I was a better improviser than kids who'd been playing like 10 years already, and was even able to join my school's show band without knowing really any real theory or how to read music...I just did it by ear, and I didn't audition....I was invited.
So for me, I think there's a huge benefit to learning improv early on, and not so much focusing on learning solos note for note. They don't matter that much really, unless you really want to play them. I guess it depends on your goals. But if the goal is to make your own music and improvise like mine was, I think it's a waste of time somewhat. I think it's more useful to look at solos and find the "principles" of what they're doing, maybe some licks that instill that principle, but then right away start using it and manipulating it and moving it to different places on the neck. Plus, I found once I got familiar with the scales, I was much more able to pick out parts or whole solos by ear, or even just memory of it. Maybe I'm biased, but I think learning music stems from improv. It has to. Think of any art, like painting as a kid, learning to draw....you're improvising and figuring it out. Same with learning to talk. And I see my niece and nephew want to just jump in and play music and sing, and there's already a sense of pitch and rhythm there. I think humans have an innate ability to improvise. It's problem solving, and we're pretty good at that as a species. I also think we're innately musical, and we just need to tap into that and learn it's ok to not know what to do yet and to just go for it.

@Dan, brother you actually taught her sooo much more in what you did. It wasn't just hearing the melody and getting her to visualize and hear all of that but; in fact, you were doing ear straining and sight screaming and getting her to hear and sing a more accurate pitch..DUDE! AMAZING! IMPLEMENTED! I so want to teach people this! It's literally a culmination of everything I learned in freshman music theory, aside from the part writing...

This is incredibly valuable stuff. I wonder if the humility Dan displays always comes directly from his lifelong pursuit to better himself as a musician. Big names, complex video/audio editing, but at the core of this particular little story is emotion; felt by the players and transmitted via interwebbery to all of us. Fucking well done and thank you.

Great video Dan! You must have been so proud hearing what your daughter came up with in two weeks. Great work on her part. You did great on your two week challenge as well! That arpeg at 12:02 there abouts was great! The other guys did great but they stuck to their comfort zone. You were definitely more jazz oriented. Also that section of you practicing the tune at the slow tempo really reminded me of Bill Frisell. Cheers! Was great to hear you all jamming. Please do more of this if you can!! Made my day.

I really wish I had learned to sing solo lines early on - I’m always blown away by recordings of George Benson singing/soloing simultaneously and it’s clearly a big part of why his solo lines are so fluent across the whole fretboard. As for 2-5-1s : I’ve been working on precisely the same thing for the last month, and am slowly starting to develop a vocabulary of 2-5-1 phrases that I can pull out of the bag whenever I feel like it. Learning this has been the most liberating musical experience I have had in 30 years of playing. A big thank you to TPS’s first interview with Josh Smith, which inspired me to try studying jazz again, years after I had abandoned it.

Me and my two boys (6&4) watch you guys every week. They refer to you affectionately as "the honkin' boys" (we're big fans of the horn). This was fantastic, and so fun! I really appreciate the bit at the end, the point is to keep progressing. Thanks for the inspiration. Great bit on singing the notes too, so helpful, and what a well played first solo! Keep it up!
