- Larry Bell takes us inside his studio in Taos, New Mexico, to talk about his work with glass, metals and other materials to create ethereal effects of light, mass and volume in sculpture. For more than half a century, Bell has pioneered the use of the vacuum tank to achieve these ends, which he describes as “improbable surfaces.”
The fourth film in Ursula magazine’s Material series focuses on Larry Bell, one of the most renowned and influential artists to emerge from the Los Angeles art scene of the 1960s. Known for his refined surface treatment of glass and his explorations of light, reflection and shadow, Bell embraces a practice that extends from painting and works on paper to glass sculptures and furniture design. Since 1969, his studio has developed a high-vacuum system for coating thin metal films onto materials, creating ethereal effects of light and color.

What an amazing video. I had the opportunity to see him talking at a Mill Valley Gallery this week and I'm always inspired by how honest and unpretentious his approach to art and life is. When I asked him how the desert affected his artistic practice he said: What it has given me is the ability to control my distractions...and the land is affordable. A true living legend.
Art is just the Evidence of the energy flowing Through me , the remanence of the existence of energy is the Art,
profound
I could drink these kinda vids of an artist in studio by the gallon. Amazing
Thanks for sharing..
Nice.
Good work.
