  • A complicated assembly with many (bad) surprises. A real short run where the best meets the worst. An unknown Messerschmitt designed for high altitude, the Hohenjäger was built in very small series and achieved some success in European skies.

built this one recently , filler galore & the canopy was missing but had a spare that fitted , finished kit turned out better than I thought it would ,fun build ,next build was an Airfix P40 which just fell together , bit boring after the Pegasus

Got to love those old kits. Ones that need good old fashioned "modelling".
    Great work.

Thanks Marian, this 109 is very unusual, i had a big problem (again) with the Tamiya varnish which burned all the paint!!! I did a new coat but the kit was damaged.....

Well done on making something decent from a short - run kit!
Just a brief background about the real aeroplane -- Germany had difficulty producing high altitude fighters as they could not obtain sufficient rare metals and raw materials to manufacture the lightweight and high temperature alloys needed for airframes, and especially lighter weight engines and superchargers. They didn't have anything that would compare at altitude with the large multi - cylinder engines by Pratt & Whitney or Wright and the RR Griffin or late versions of the Merlin.
Besides the general shortage of fuel they had not developed catalytic cracking, so did not have sufficient quantities of high octane aviation fuel
The Bf 109H was an attempt to solve that problem, but not successful
As for the kit itself, I wonder if it would have been easier if you had combined it with a mass produced injection moulded kit of a Bf 109G or Bf 109K?
Here's a tip that I must admit I've only found out about myself - for large gaps lay down a strip of plastic card or a length of stretched sprue before finishing it off with filler

Thanks for your so interesting comment. It is certain that rebuilding from suitable kits would have been an elegant solution.
Indeed, the filer has retracted in some places, especially at the junction of the wings. But the worst part was the application of the Tamiya varnish which literally burned the paint already applied on the kit. I had to start all over, losing most of the surface detail!.
Thanks again, very happy to read you and, of course... Happy new year!

¡Hola Julio!

Ah, the 'joy' of short-run kits.. I still have their VG.33 in the stash. You sure managed to turn this one into a nice model though!
Question: what type of putty did you use? I'm asking since you used a cotton bud to smooth it out; it probably isn't Revell putty.. Or is it Vallejo acrylic putty?

    • @stephanedavid3421
      @stephanedavid3421  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hello mate! I had a huge problem with the Tamiya Gloss Varnish which destroyed the paint. I had to redo everything but details were irretrievably lost. The putty used is Prince August.

@@stephanedavid3421 I feel you; I recently had a varnish issue with my DFS 230 which crackled the paint. Haven't corrected that one yet..

@@KitKabinet I am nevertheless terribly disappointed: the kit was a great challenge and it started off pretty well. I will no longer use Tamiya varnish: the three new sprays go in the trash. It makes me crazy!
