No one has any idea how hard and different working on a cruise ship is except for people who have worked on a cruise ship. It can be fun and rewarding, but dear goodness it can be oppressive, suffocating, and isolating.

Yachts too. I had that experience over and over so many times. At the time however, (back then-I don't know about today) the money was overall more worth it.
I just wanted to say how important a video this truly was for you to make. I work with young girls all the time who don’t know that it’s okay to say “I have had ENOUGH”. They want to be “nice”. They want to accommodate everyone around them. They don’t want anyone to get mad at them. They are afraid of making a tough decision and regretting it later. We talk a lot about listening to that inner voice. Honoring that voice takes a lot of strength and courage. Especially in the face of a company like Disney: I’m incredibly proud of you for doing what was best for you and listening to that voice. I felt a little sad for that Gianna in the video who was clearly torn and feeling so emotional but knowing it was the right choice. I wanted to tell her it would be okay and that she was making the right choice!!! You are a badass lady warrior! Adore you forever!!!

Hey Girl! It's Lexie! I am so proud of you and that you made the decision that was right for you. Ship life is HARD, I know--I did it for 3 years, and no one can relate or understand unless they've lived it. But at the same time, the stuff that you learn about yourself during that time is so important and it truly can help you throughout the rest of your life. As you said, the friendships you make are what keep you sane, and you get to know those friends so well because you are going through these crazy experiences together. The bond I have with my ship friends is unlike any other, and they are now my absolute best friends because they truly know me and have seen every possible version of me. So definitely don't let those friends go! It can be a weird feeling when you know that you are done with that lifestyle, but it's great that you listened to yourself and decided to make the decision when you did. If you ever want to meet up in Orlando and go to the parks or get lunch or something let me know!!! I would love to catch up!

I experienced the same feelings, so I resigned after completing my first contract.. I remember myself saying “i’m Doing an effort to deliver a great job and they give you sh&&t back!” Some managers’ manners and dcl food at the mess were the huge two reasons why I decided I would not come back.

I know that this was posted over a year ago, but it seems like you have crawled into my life and told me how to be happy. I have been working at a job that I hate while working part time at a job that I love. I have been too afraid to quit my full time job for fear that I won't make enough teaching (which is what I love to do) to sustain myself and my family. But you have helped me make that decision! I'm going to pull the trigger and start teaching full time. I'm already feeling a bit happier just thinking about it. Thank you!

This is what my CP was like. I wasn’t allowed bereavement when my grandfather died, but I called out and flew home anyways- for like 18 hours. It was incredible being home. I was so miserable at WDW, and I came home and couldn’t do it anymore.
I am SO sorry that happened to you. I can't imagine. Must have been so heartbreaking. Once you go home you don't want to go back!

Cruise ship life isn't for everyone really. Salute to those working for almost decades in contracts giving up real life and freedom. I myself worked for 3 n a half contracts as a cook for Royal Caribbean and I have to say it was a nightmare. Completely torn apart physically and mentally, even felt like my body cried out saying "enough of this torment" haha. So grateful I got out of literal hell at sea 😄 😄 before covid hit.

It makes me SO extremely mad that Disney and other cruise lines dont even offer at least one SINGLE day off for their crew. Crew members are literally going through the worse and they think giving them a few hours a day will keep them motivated.
I think that a lot of cruise lines operate like that because people would have nothing to do on their days off even though that's the point! I totally agree with you!

On almost all mainstream cruise lines, with Port days, entertainment staff are allowed off, only stipulation is to be onboard a half hour before the passengers time requirement. In some cases, volunteers are asked to accompany shore excursions, acting as an assistant
to the excursion guide, minimum duties. Also, when lunch is included with the excursion, you dine with the passengers. And, you will not miss the ship as the ship will not depart without all shore excursions passengers returning.
I have heard that disney is more strict with crew then other cruise lines. That sounds lovely though!

It is the hardest job I could ever think of having! These crew members are happy and patient despite it all. They are truly incredible and make Disney Cruise Line so worth it!

Freedom is different for everyone. I worked on a cruise line over 25 years and I felt so free!! Now I’ve been working in land on a job that I feel trap. I can’t take vacation when I want and I can’t quit because my family Depends on me. I have to put up with frequent yelling and criticism if I make a mistake. I’m trying to find another job but it’s not easy at my age. God bless you girl!

Your not the 1st person who compared there experience working on Disney cruise lines to being in jail and being very unhappy. What the hell is Disney doing? Evil!! Very disheartened.
I think it's every cruise line. It's just the type of lifestyle. Similar to jail in that you live there, cant leave, have to do exactly as you are told every day, you are working 70+ hours a week but you are never really off! It is a great way for many people in other countries to earn a living though! It just wasn't for me!
They are evil.
It isn't so much that they are evil, but that they can get away with it, because cruise ships are documented in other countries, the laws for workers are not the same as in the US, but it does sound like some of this would violate maritime law.
So I recently applied to go work for Disney cruise. I am someone who needs to stay connected to family though and looked up videos to see what others went through on the ship. Honestly I want to thank you for your videos. It really helped me realize that I do not want that experience. I’ve worked at a job before where I would come home crying every day and the weekends were never long enough and I hated everything. When I left I just was so happy. Listening to your stories or even just explaining things it brought back the same scared and nervous emotions I had at an old job.
If I even get called back I will probably tell them never mind. I also have hip problems at the moment and I’m waiting for results so it’s better anyways.

I suspect that part of the reason why leaving the ship was so emotional for you is that you made up your mind to leave at the very same time that the job was starting to wear you down.
Working 70 hours a week with a broken toe and choosing to deal with it because you feared the consequences of having to seek help in Nassau, was a very good example of how this kind of work/life balance can become destructive, playing games with your mind, and ultimately causing you to become a bit brainwashed- for lack of a better word. You decided you couldn’t live that way anymore when you were almost taken in by the system that exists on cruise ships in general.
Usually when we see ourselves in photos or videos from the past and we struggle to recognize ourselves or recall memories from the time depicted, it is due to an overwhelming amount of stress or a painful experience that was happening at that time. I’m glad you went through it and made valuable discoveries about other people, other cultures, and yourself. ☺️

this sounds like a very similar experience to me working at a summer camp... we go insane living in these cabins in the middle nowhere for months with no freedoms. it’s the happiest place on earth for a lot of people but for employees it’s so tough...
I have had a lot of comments from people who have worked at summer camps who say that the experience is similar! I can totally understand that!
I cried watching because I fel the same when as was an Au Pair in the US. Deciding to quit is not easy but it was a chapter in our life and is over. Now I'm looking to be a crew cast member at Disney Cruise to have another experience, thanks for sharing yours. (Brazil here)

It all depends on what job position you have. If you were a cruisestaff or lile a musician,singer,dancer your experience would have been much different. I was a musician. We had all the freedom to do basically all the guest do. We also had all the free time to be off the ship and enjoy the ports/countries. A normal working day for me was about 3 hours. It really was the best job in the world!!!sorry your experience was so bad tho.

I thought about taking a job on a cruise line doing theater tech/stagehand work (as that's what I do lol) but never pulled the trigger on it. Did I dodge a bullet or would it have been closer to your experience?
@@scandisnowgirl3696 if you are the actual theater tech(sound technician) you have a very light schedule. If you a longue tech you only need to ensure that the stage is probably set, turn the band on and then you can leave and do what ever you want. So you literally show up, turn the system on for the band ensure they are ok and leave. That's 5minutes. Only down side is your're on call if anything goes wrong which never really happens. If your're a stage staff you work more. But it's never long hours. You move the equipment and set of for the shows and the bands and that's it. Few hours work. Lots of breaks in-between and definitely time to get off in the ports and enjoy.

I think this is why a lot of us from the states don’t stay on cruise line very long. The pay doesn’t keep us working if we are unhappy. Thankful for the experience, but after I got that taste of freedom while on vacay there was no way I could return.

I'm way late to this video but I totally understand how you feel. I had to quit my job as an au pair in France because I had that same miserable feeling where every day just felt like such a burden and I just needed to leave. I'm hoping to make a video on it as well but I'm glad I found someone who has gone through something similar (although two very different jobs!)

Wow! I had a similar experience too. Not with Disney cruise line but with another live/work place. It’s crazy how I can feel how you were feeling.

I think Disney in general treats their younger employees pretty bad weather they are actually employed or on the college program. I did the cultural exchange program twice. My first time was amazing. I made great friends,had a great work location. I meet my husband on my first program. The friends I made on my first program were the best and they are still my best friend today. My second time not so good. I had a horrible manger and was treated like shit and my roommates were horrible. Disney knows they can get away with treating the “kids” are just in awe with working for Disney.
I think it totally depends on your superiors too, I've had similar experiences and I am so sorry that your second program was bad! When I was in my second college program I had a similar experience!
Gianna Alexis I wouldn’t trade either experience. They both taught me lessons and I learned so much from each experience. Disney taught me things I don’t think I would have learned elsewhere. My husband and I are still Disney nuts and are slowly turning our kids into crazy Disney people. We had two weddings. One in Italy for my family that didn’t want to travel and one in America for his family that didn’t want to travel. Our American wedding was held at Poly.
Coming from someone who has done ships and the DCP, this is the most relatable thing I have ever watched. Ship life is not real and it completely feels like a bubble WOW okay I just needed to comment this because I have never related to anything more. Also btw watching your other vids and I saw your Duffy with the uniform on that did you make that? cause that is amazing. OH and you're not being dramatic, this is too true.

This is your channel so have a good rant. It is therapeutic and a good way to get things off your mind.
However
This seems kind of a walk in the park vs the time I and others did at sea while in the US Navy. I know of 1 trip (not mine) a carrier was a sea for 10 mouths (most are only 6 months with 2-3 ports of calls) with only 1 port of call for 3 days in month #8. We too worked 7 days a week and 12+ hour days. Drill's, Flight Ops, Drill Drill more Flight Ops . Mail from the planes that went to shore was our only saving grace.
It took me 20 years after the Navy before I did my first cruise. While on a cruise I still found myself standing at the fantail looking over the horizon for long periods of time lost in remembrance.
Thank you for being so kind but I have explained this before, I didn't sign up for the navy or anything close to that! I wasn't ready for this life.

I've never related to a video more deeply than this. I left my Disney college program a few months ago due to a lot of the same reasons and everything you said just resonated so deeply because I feel you completely understand my feelings at the time to. *Question: what happens if you don’t give your full 30 day notice...: is it still just a six month restriction for all Disney jobs or what? Also, well that cruise line ever hire you back without giving a 30 day notice?*
If you do not give a 30 day notice you are banned from working at the walt disney company and all affiliate companies for life.
We went on a Disney cruise 3 (4?) years ago. We had a great time, and had the IMPRESSION that the cast members, and crew members we came into contact with that they really enjoyed it. Wow, I can really appreciate your perspective, and I know it isn't true for everyone. I can imagine what it's like, and the feeling of being trapped. . . We had a former au pair that worked at DW on one of the student college programs. SHE loved it, but that was at a park, not on a ship, with all it's restrictions. HOWEVER, many of the things you describe could also describe many other jobs as well. That's what work is. As I tell my two teenage sons, "IF it was fun, they'd call it fun. It's work, and that's why they pay you to be there."
I don't know of any other jobs that work you 70+ hours a week for $5 and you cant go home at the end of the day or contact your family unless you pay for it. Thank you for the comment!
The military. Trust me. Sometimes you can't contact your family for months. But please don't think I don't appreciate what working on a cruise ship is like. I do.
@@yikesvikes You said many other jobs, so what are these "many other jobs" besides the military? I did not sign up for the military. I signed up to do hair and makeup on little girls. Are you understanding the difference?
LOL, coal mining, merchant marine, people who work 10 and 12 hour shifts at night, and are always on the opposite schedule from their friends and family. . . I get it. Aspects of your job were tough. As you said; it wasn't for you. . . Some people loved the same job you hated. You didn't. Move on. Find what works for you and do that. That's how life works. Everyone has different likes, dislikes, and thresholds. Working for Disney Cruise Lines was not for you. You made a decision to get out of it, for your own emotional, physical, and mental health. Good decision.
I work for a small cruise line I completely understand. I loved it but its a lot emotionally and physically.

I worked for a cruise line as well and it amazed me the feeling of absolute isolation, depression, exhaustion that came with ship life.
I completed one contract and when I returned for my second contract within one week on board I knew I needed to leave and I never felt so alone or so powerless because you are at their control to do what they want
I wish Disney would improve working conditions for their employees. Not allowing employees to have at least a day off once a week for themselves is inhumane. While it's a business and the company has shareholders to answer to, it doesn't impact profitability with employees taking some time to take care of themselves. To the Disney cruise execs reading this, treating employees like this is not good for the employee or the company. It gives a bad perception as a cruise guest to see how employees are treated or overworked. It doesn't matter if you hire someone from the Phillipines for a lower wage to save money either, people are human, not robots.
When I worked in the parks the working conditions were really good. I have nothing bad to say about them. Cruise line is so different BUT they did tell me what I was signing up for. I just didn't know how bad it would be on me physically and mentally! I agree with you completely!

I just have been binge watching your videos and they have been enjoyable to watch. I know exactly how you felt and everything you have mention, I have felt the same way. I did one contract on the Disney Fantasy working in the YA department and that was enough for me. It was my dream for 2 years to work on a cruise ship and when I finally did it, the lifestyle just wasn't for me. I felt like I was in prison as well, wearing the ugly uniform, eating the same food and working all day and night. After the 2 week, I wanted to quit, I felt so alone and depressed. But I ended up sticking it through, don't know how but I was thankful it went so quickly. Unless they have worked on a cruise line, they don't know what you went through and the roller-coaster of emotions you had to endure. When I got home and slept in my own bed, I felt free, it was the best feeling. I don't regret my decision in working on the Disney Cruise Line, at least I know what it's like, its just wasn't for me. But thanks for posting your videos, at least I know I'm not the only one who felt like that.

I was in a similar situation to you, except I was on a fishing vessel, no land for 6 weeks at a time and I was miserrrrable, it took me one year to finally just quit, sea life just isnt for everybody, especially in environments that are restricting and suffocating, ahh I'm so proud of you! i just found your channel and I'm so happy I did!

Just watched your video and you nailed it! I have been working in the cruise line industry for almost 30 years and currently work at a major cruise lines private island and LOVING it. I valued my time aboard ships but unless you have worked on a ship before none of your friends or family will ever understand it. I constantly was told well, you dont really work for a living as you just cruise all the time..... WRONG! Anyway, just glad you got your life back on track, as I have done as well.

Thank you for posting this. I was “friends with” a Princess on the Dream and I went through all this and so much more. I’m still traumatized. It changed my life forever. Seriously the hardest thing I ever did. I still have nightmares every night.

Thanks for making this video. We just went on our first DC and I was really uncomfortable with how exhausted and depressed The Cabanas staff seemed all the time. Do the food service staff have it the worst? Or what about the laundry staff?! Just curious. Thanks.
Oh no that makes me so sad but I understand! I think galley workers and dining room have it the worst! They have no privileges to go in any guest areas. Very hard life.
I did one contract in Cabanas as a commis chef, worst contract ever. Honestly, we dread working in Cabanas.

I worked for royal caribbean. Celebrity solstice to be exact. And if situations was different with me, i would of been able to, finish my full contract, but because persons did not allow me to. I had to come off the ship very early in my contract. Which is very heartbreaking not only to me but to family, because a lot of money was spent for me to go make money. But my opportunity was messed up really badly. I guess if i had gotten to work my contract,gotten my full rest hrs, enjoyed all the parties they hosted for us,i would had a blest contract. But God is in charge,he saw my struggles,but i know he will provide for me again,and this time it will be for the best,and my happiness will nit be ceased. So girl. Next time heal after your break up. And i bet you, you would of enjoyed your contract. Because to me it was your break up that made your contract on board not enjoyable. I wish you the best and i hope by now,you found love,and you get a good job again on cruiseships if its your desire to work again because your mind is now clear and your happy. I watched some of your other cruise videos and I understood more than just watching this one (so, for anyone that doesn't get it, watch the diaries and the 5 Things videos). At first I didn't get why you didn't get air and see the sky ("weren't there any nice crew areas?" and then I watched the 5 things and I remembered what it was like. I had a job in which I lived at my place of work and you were never "off". Not really. I remember that, at the end of it, I knew I could never do anything like that again. It felt so invasive and, since we were paid on salary, I figured I made less than $3/hr considering the 24/7 role. Sure, you have room and board and nice views, but the excitement wears off in the face of the job. At the end of the day, it's still a job. I feel ya. I also felt the same about driving and I wasn't on a boat. I just didn't get to leave with my car.

I went through the SAME EXACT THING as you did.. I was hired by NCL for the Pride of America in Hawaii. It was a complete NIGHTMARE and i was incredibly unhappy. It was the worst job I have ever had. I was in Hawaii for A MONTH. my co workers were verbally abusive, my best friend and I got on the same ship for the same job. (it was in entertainment. We were stage technicians) and she was miserable and the room we shared was tiny and all of a sudden i was claustrophobic and having panic attacks. No one showed us our room in the beginning, so when we finally found it some 4 or 5 hours later, the ship had left port and the water tight doors were closed. We had no idea how to get out if something happened. Also our cabin was all the way forward in the bow and deep in the front of the ship. Water level by the bow thrusters. So 5am every single day, we were woken up after 4 hours of sleep with the bow thrusters at full. UNREAL.. i was having more panic attacks and i was unbelievable unhappy and angry. We got off the ship twice, that's it. We couldn't leave. The crew that was there was giving us all the work, and then they would go to the bar and get drunk.. We gave our notice after 1 month, that night our supervisor said would we be williing to leave the next day would we go. We did. They left us in Maui with 2 tickets home. worst experience ever. I will never ever work for a cruise ship ever again.
Oh my gosh this sounds terrible. I hated those water tight doors! I was always getting lost! My room was pretty quiet thankfully! I know exactly how you feel!

I went on a regent cruise this summer. I gotta admit, the staff were great and yes, they work their butts off! Gotta be tough.
Definitely tough! It's an amazing experience as a guest but SUPER hard work as a crew member!

Yes I think I would have and I can't say for sure but if there was an option to work somewhere else yes I would leave!

i went on a disney cruise when i was young. i went to the BBB and it was such a fun experience. it truly saddens me to hear how the crew members are treated. the girl doing my hair and makeup seemed so happy and bubbly on the surface but might’ve been battling some tough stuff underneath. thank you for telling your story, it truly needs spread
I really did love my job and truly was so happy when I was doing makeovers. The life on the ship is so hard so yes there were days where I put on a mask but chances are, she was totally happy to be giving you that makeover! The kids really do bring the magic alive!

I worked offshore 80 hrs a week 28 days straight 7 days a week. 12 hours a day. So I know what it feels like to be out 28 days at a time no days off. It does wear you out but , I do miss it at times but it's hard. It's a job...you should have finished and just switched to something else.
Yes I do miss working on the ship as well sometimes.. in a weird way. It is hard work but fun sometimes!

They told me I got the job three weeks before and they gave me my flight information five days before. For some people it takes longer, for some people it takes shorter.

on one of my numerous trips home from college i realized it was doing it all wrong, when i'd leave school for the summer i'd be sad and missing my friends (who weren't even in town by then anyway), and when i left home i'd feel sad and miss my family and thought...why am i sad no matter what i do. even realizing this hasn't changed anything, maybe it's just my way of thinking, but i thought it was an interesting non-symmetry that could probably be useful if i could reverse it

Would you say that entertainment has more freedoms because of their work schedule, or are they just as limited as other roles?
I like to think entertainment has a little more leeway... they work the same amount of hours but they are spread out way differently schedule wise. The friends I had in entertainment worked later then me but they got longer breaks during the day and more time off in Port Canaveral!
It depends on what you are doing. I worked for royal caribbean for 4 years as a musician. I only worked for about 3 hours a day. With so much freedom. Basically i could have gone any where on the ship and do anytime. Also had all the time to be off the ship and enjoy what every port/country we were in. Best job in the world!!!!!!!! Really miss it!!
It is true that the 3rd party workers such as musicians or variety acts have a much different schedule and fewer hours. But as far as entertainment cast, they have a 70 hour per week contract!

You also say that the scheduled, rule based ship life wasn't for you. Were there people on-board who thrived in that kind of environment, or do you think everybody would feel the same in the end?
Thank you so much for watching and supporting! I 100% feel like this has changed me immensely and I do feel like a better person because of this experience. Living with people from all over the world teaches you so much and from that point of view it was an awesome experience. In that moment when I was quitting I felt destroyed but once I got off I was able to take away positives as well.
There are people on board who totally thrive in this environment and have been doing it so long they could not even imagine life another way. I have great respect for these crew members because I truly think its the hardest job you could ever have.
You poor thing, what a nightmare!! So, would they not let you up on the decks to get fresh air? Like, you were actually stuck inside the ship 24/7? You must have felt like you were let out of prison when you quit. I guess one advantage to you having had the experience is that you will never take every day freedoms for granted and that’s pretty awesome.
We were working such long days that there wasn't really time to go get fresh air. You also could not wear a costume on deck 4 so between 8am and 10pm there was no way to get fresh air. I did feel that way. I literally screamed on the top of my lungs the 1st half of the drive back to Orlando. That is totally true. So many normal things I don't take for granted anymore.
Gianna Alexis I can’t even imagine! I guess cruise ship Co’s have got their employees exactly where they want them. I knew someone who skated in a show on a cruise ship & it sounds like show performers are treated like gold & service crew are treated like very low paid... captives.

My car was parked at the port and we docked in florida twice a week and sometimes I was able to get off and drive!
It’s amazing that you went as far as you did! I quit after two weeks for a cruise line I worked for. I was so depressed for the lack of freedom, it was honestly a prison. I tried sticking with it like everyone said I should but an incident happened and I just couldn’t do it. I’m glad there’s people who actually enjoy it but it’s one of those things that people won’t understand unless they do it themselves. I could rant on about it for hours 😂

Yes we don't get one day off. Were on for our entire contract and then we are sent home for 2 months of vacation! We would sometimes get a 2pm start or an 8pm finish, so I would say it was small breaks but we would call those "Days Off" lol

I made $5.06 an hour. Its contractual so thats broken down to hourly. They operate under bohemian law so there is no minimum like the USA

Alezandra Davila that is why most cruise ships are not registered in the United States. That way they don’t have to play by US laws. Which include pay and work schedules.
This is interesting. You are normal. Cruise line is not for everyone and that is ok. Society is so different in each country and I think that being American is different because of American cultures. Many foreign people see cruise line as a much better alternative and job opportunity because of their social cultures.

Am I reading this wrong? It sounds like an ingrown toenail on her foot. Couldn't she get better shoes? She is very vague about her foot "injury". She signs a 6 month contract and couldn't even stay that long. This is a sad sight for this generation. Edit: At the end she said her doctor said she had a broken bone in her foot. Now, I am curious if she ever reported the injury/pain to the onboard staff. They get medical so I do't know why she didn't discuss this.

I worked for RCCL for 6 years but I had three strips as Stage Manager Oh lord the day I quit was great. told I had all this paper work to do getting off in the US was not going to be easy. LOL Ah I am from Indiana and I do think it is still in the USA? Oh right then you can just walk off with the guest and I did.
