TUTORIAL: Warming and Firing a Manual Electric Kiln with Switches

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 19 ส.ค. 2024
  • I made this video because I could not find a source of information on how to fire this type of Kiln. This is an older Gare Electric Kiln ( Evenheat) that has a series of switches, not temperature dials.
    Through trial and error and help from my Aunt I was able to finally figure it out how to warm and fire this type of kiln.
    In the video I start with warming the kiln, and loading the cone sitter.I then take you through the entire process of a bisque firing from beginning to end.
    ★If you found this video helpful please consider making a donation below - thank you! ★ Paypal or Credit Card - www.paypal.com...

    Ps. I realize that I called the kiln a keg a couple of times at the end of the video. I feel that small error does not diminish the helpfulness of the information contained in this video.

    I found an old kiln in San Diego called AMERICAN BEAUTY. Last month I had an electrician take a look at it. He cleaned some terminals and years of garage dust and after a modification to my electrical panel to 240 amp fuse I was ready to follow your video. Today (4/12/22) at 12:30pm the final fourth switch was turned on for the first bisque firing. The people I bought the kiln from said it worked when they bought it 25 years ago. However, due to their situation the kiln hadn't been fired since then. So, your video is helping to get this old kiln its chance to come to life for my garage studio. New Mexico Clay of Albuquerque, has been most helpful with their advice keeping in step with your video. Thanks so very much.

    Great video! It saved me from reading the manual back to back!
    For all of you out there who, like me, purchased this old model, you can Google the kiln sitter model and you'll find the user's manual in PDF format. My 2 kilns are LT-3K and K-10. I found both PDFs through Google (they look essentially the same), but with this video, I don't need to read them! But they're nice to have in case something happens...

I was given essentially the same thing - mine is called an American Beauty PB-18 or AB-18 and included an "extender" to give the kiln an additional 5 inches of height for a wopping 5760 watts. @@thepaperbackpotter Hi there. Other than this video and a PDF for the Kiln Sitter, I've found nothing. Haven't needed anything either. Pretty straight forward kiln. It's very manual, requiring lots of trips to check on it - as shown in the video.
      I use a Raspberry Pi Zero W to calculate and monitor the temperature slope remotely from the comfort of my living room. That reduces the trips to 3, to trip the other switches.

    • @thepaperbackpotter
      @thepaperbackpotter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DominicRichens Hi Dominic! Thank you so much for your reply! How would you go about the glaze firing? Do you wait longer between each trip? Do you mind walking me through that process? Thank you again!!!

    • @DominicRichens
      @DominicRichens 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thepaperbackpotter for both bisque and glaze is use the cone sitter to ultimately determine when it is done firing.
      The difference is for bisque I keep the ramp around 100°C/hr for the first 6 hours. That means lid open an inch and vent open with one switch on initially. Then close lid, close vent, turn on more switches. After it hits 600°C I turn the last switch on and leave it until the kiln sitter shuts it off.
      Glazing is easier and faster, everything closed and just flip a switch every hour and let the kiln sitter shut if off.

    Venting the kiln after firing greenware is OK, but you should not vent the kiln after a glaze firing, it can cause the glaze to have a crackle effect.

      Hi, Karen Manasco… hoping you might see this message even though it's been 7 years since your post on this video! I also have a 5 switch evenheat manual kiln/kiln sitter. It was second hand and fairly well used by the looks of some of the fire brick and tube assembly etc. All I have done with it so far is a test fire which seemed to work as it should. I'm wondering if you have any advice you are willing to share regarding what you have learned in using your kiln over the years. All Evenheat would send me is a manual for the kiln sitter, but I am curious as to how exactly and what to expect for bisque and glaze fires. Have you ever begun firing ceramics in yours? I plan to bisque fire to cone 05 and glaze to 5 or 6. Thanks in advance if you have any wisdom to impart :)

    Hi thanks for this - really useful - but I think that was underfired.. I've been reading up on kiln sitters and using the mini cones and it should pop the switch when the cone has melted to a 90 degree angle.
    Here's a link to the kiln sitter manual:

    Thanks though, still very useful

    hi i was wondering if the cone holder needs to be in operation to use a kiln like this because i can watch the cones through a pep hole and i put the switch up up a stick any thoughts on this?

    Does the red light turn off when it reaches the set temperature?

    please please read the tutorials online as this is in no way the proper way to set up or handle the kiln sitter or your cone at all! This is very important as you will not fire to proper cone temperatures and you never close your upper vent hole so you can vent the gasses properly from your kiln! Please be careful!!!!

    Hi, just saw this and thanks for posting! I feel like you're in my basement! :) I have this kiln. Don't have a vent and the manual is telling me to leave it cracked with top peep open until the 3rd switch is flipped. It's then telling me to leave the top peep open during the whole glaze/bisque firing. Is anyone else doing this? I also don't have a pyrometer and am trying to figure out how to slow fire and soak. Anyone have any experience with that? :) Thanks!

    Is there a way to fire without a kiln sitter? It seems so annoying having to load a sitter in each time and having to have the exact sitter cone needed for the cone you want to fire to. I actually lodged the weight in place to avoid having to use a cone sitter

      There are self supporting "witness cones" but I want to fire without have to use money on another material. I ended up just buying two packs of sitter cones for about $10. It's not that big of a deal.

      I use a pyrometer. Just need to watch the temp.

    Is there a video that shows how to change switches? I have an old kiln like this but I think the switches are bad. I won't be able to get a new kiln for a couple of months so I have to use what I have.
