Allen Collins was a giant to me as a kid. His playing along with his spirit, will always be missed. And Ricki Medlocke as his placeholder is so fitting. Kudos Mr Gary Rossington. Well done sir.
You gotta wonder what Gary thinks when they play this song does he still feel the other guys around him or maybe even see them every once and a while , I get chills every time I hear this song I wasnt even thought of in 77 but damnit man i grew up in the wrong generation!
Yeah I have always wondered that too. It must feel weird to be the last survivor of the original band. He's outlived them all, his 2 best friends RVZ & Allen. Esp with Allen you could tell how close they were & how much they loved each other & Ronnie was their brother, father figure, mentor. If you think abt it though he has been with Ricky & JVZ for decades but the original guys were such magic together & just the times they struggled, I know they fought but that workin & strugglin to make it bonds you. I am glad that Ricky is honoring Allen the way he does & glad it is him carrying the torch since he was with them in the early days & how better to sing than Johnny. Whwn he 1st took over, he sounded so much like Ronnie but over the years he sounds less like that but my guess is way Johnny sounds today is very similar to the way Ronnie would sound today. Thanks for sharing this, very cool

A SCREWDRIVER! After all these years! I saw Skynyrd at RFK stadium in 1976 and was up close to the stage squinting with my eyes at Gary's SG on Freebird trying to figure out what the heck was stuck in the first fret, but with him moving around I couldn't get a good look at it. So a screwdriver?! This explains so much! lol...
Totally Agreed.!! RIP to them all, for giving us some Kick ass Music!! Would have loved to see how they all would be today Ripping out the same songs and more!!
I've noticed that Gary used to stutter a lot in interviews and get nervous every time he spoke, but overtime, his speaking skills got better. But then again, he always got his point across through his great guitar playing.

Allen wrote it all. I read that on the pronounced album, Allen is playing all the guitar parts, including the slide. It’s just what I read, don’t know if it’s fact.
@@ravencountry430 I believe Allen played the leads at the end all by himself, which only took one or two takes, but pretty sure Gary played the slide on original....though Allen wrote all the music.
That was a kick in the pants!!! Gary said he didn't know why they called it the "Bolero' part. I believe they got that from Jeff Beck's Bolero. Jimmy Page also uses a similar riff.
I've always liked Ricky Medlocke because he has a sense of humor about himself and is relatable when talking about music,...he gets a kick out of what he does and it shows in this clip...no attitude, just straight up pickin...the kind of guy that you could have a beer with.. he still has a sense of wonder and appreciation in regards to what Allen Collins had created...

I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1999. I was sitting five rows back and dead center from the stage. After they finished playing Free Bird, Gary Rossington threw his Gibson Guitar into the audience. The Guitar landed directly into the arms of a guy sitting directly in front of me. We both caught a part of the Guitar, but because he had caught the majority of the Guitar and I only had my hands on the neck, I let go and congratulated him. To this day it bothers me on how close I came to catching and owning a Concert played Gary Rossington Guitar!!
