I love this guy, so impressed. He proves you are responsible for your own education. Good learner, good teacher. I’m 55, 30 years in the business and still learning.
I carry an Allen wrench set for jams in nail guns and I also started carrying a pair of 6 inch Milwaukee channel locks and I use them all the time. Couldn’t go without them
I work in industrial construction where we form foundation and piers for concrete. I use a set of occidental bag: the big oxys. I carry fasteners, tape, chalk line, cats paw, speed square, spade bits and concrete bits on the left. On the right I carry two pencils, torpedo level, marker, calculator, crescent wrench, knife, plumb bob, string line, and drill bits.
Been bending nails since 1982 .. Never been into carrying more than I need .. Whatever I am doing that day determines what goes in my belt .. I get a kick of some of these young bucks , That have a 200 lb toolbelts with every tool Home Depot sells .. One pouch for a table saw and another for a compressor and sledgehammer .. The more weight you carry is more wear and tear on the body .. Carrying 5 lbs more and climbing a ladder all day translates into tons of force .. I like a lightweight pouch .. All I carry is a " Measuring Device " a straight claw waffle headed finger tenderizer . A calculator ,, maybe a chalk line ,A speed triangle and a razor knife .. I am a lead and I rely on the other scaffold monkey's to have a line or a chisel .. A pencil is always wedged in my ear canal . When I see many with shiny belts made from rich Corinthian leather .I say .. Oh Hell .. " New Belt Alert" .
Just found your channel and just wanted to say you do a great job explaining your trade. Interesting stuff. I like to see young guys not afraid to get their hands dirty.. Thanks for sharing.
I am in my 50s and mostly do repair work or vinyl siding. I use oxy lights but reversed the bags because I am a lefty. On the left I carry a 30' tape, two utility knives (one for coil stock the other for whatever), a keel with a crayon multiple pencils, straight tin snips on the leather hammer loop, compass and a punch tool for placing aluminum nails in odd places, and a Tajima chalk box in blue. When I frame I carry a red Tajima to correct any wrong lines. I keep a 1" chisel and a zip tool. I have a Hart 16 oz for vinyl and trim work and my 20 oz Douglas for framing. The right side is fasteners and a speed square. I used to carry everything but the kitchen sink but as I get older I go lighter!
These are a game changer. Knipex 8" High Leverage Bolt End Cutting Nippers model 61 01 200. Effortlessly pull gun nails with damaged heads, cut 16d nails like butter, and cut nylon or steel bands on material like a laser. Cut off missed sheathing nails from the inside with very little effort.
Hi Matt, I watch your videos quite a bit, I’m a carpenter in the Bay Area. I bought my diamond back set based on this video and I love them. My setup is fairly similar oddly enough. The few tweaks I made is I keep a 6” combo square in the mini pocket for small measurements and transferring small reveals, I got the magnetic tape cover to keep my bits in my bag/ and can rotate a few. Also I got the flatbar/cats paw holster which works great. As for the suspenders the best one I’ve found for breathability and and durability are the occidental nylon straps they are awesome.
I got an Occidental tool vest with 2 clip on pouches, one for fasteners and the other holding my Tajima chalk line with a small fast clamp, empire speed square, 25' empire tape, fatmax metal stud and drywall hammer, shark tooth drywall saw, fixed dewalt blade handle, Milwaukee 6" and 2" bit shafts, vest has multiple built in pockets, my new set up, been using it for almost a year now, love it. Got rid of my old set which I had suspenders on too, it was a few brands put together for my Metal stud and drywall hanging profession... gonna look into the Diamondback tool belts, never heard of em... thanks for sharing
I've had a maxximum tool belt for 2 years it was my first one and it has held up great, got it for just under $100 with tax, came with suspenders, back comfort thingy with velcro to keep pouches in place, I'm higly considering a diamond back now tho, specifically for the hammer holster.
Hey Matt! I love my Buckaroo tool belt! I am a custom/finish contractor and build cabinets, vanities, islands, custom tables, getting into doors next! I love the Buckaroo because it’s real “Leather” and like diamond I set it up! Their suspenders are the best! (Never mind the color deal) and now I hear Occidental has a Trim Carpenter belt set up ? And a lot of guys are switching to it? Do one on the new occidental trim carpenter belt set up????? Ok young man keep up the good work! Stay in shape and one day you can still be swinging a hammer and building at 61. ! Retired once and got bored! Then became a contractor! Love it!!
I have the O.L trim set up with a set of hip buddies, the leather/nylon belt and a set of stronghold suspenders. I love it for finish work, 👍 😁 😁 🔨🇺🇸 🇮🇪
I have a diamondback toolbelt I have the bags that come on the raptor set up but I bought the 6 inch belt for comfort. I also use their basic shoulder strat that I really enjoy. I haded their flat bar holder that work great for my 12 inch catpaw of my flatbar since I do a bit of remodeling and some framing. But I am gonna had the sac and the chisel addition. This belt system works great on my hips and is easy on the back and never get on my way when moving. really worth the investement
Great video. Iam running diamondback pouches on a badger belt cuz I think badger feels much better. I was almost going to buy the 4inch diamondback belt and deluxe suspenders but you talked me out of it lol thanks for that though because I get really sweaty so that choice would have been horrible and very expensive. I will just go with the badger suspenders
I just ordered a atlas 46 belt and bags I to replace my oxys.. still waiting.. trying them .. getting older need something lighter.. had my oxys since 1990.. they are still serviceable.. oxys are great bags👍😊
Great video Matt. Your production and editing skills are improving. This video was one of your best. The hammer spinning was impressive. My belt is a CLC and has leather trim with nylon pockets with suspenders.. I swing a Dewalt 15 oz mig welded hammer. Shoot nails with a MAX nsil gun off a Makita compressor while wearing my MBW BANG ON long sleeve t shirt!! Can't wait until you get hats.
Got a oxy 4 bag pouch on the left 5062 for fasteners and oxy 5017db on the right for tools. On a badger belt. Wayyyyy too wide. Im thinking about getting the artisan bags for the badger belt.
I'm a framer for 42 years Occidental fat lip bags, stilleto titanium hammer, basic chalk box, ive had em all, fat max tape, cats paw I throw on the ground near where I'm working case I need it 16 gun nails in one bag compartment 8 gun nails in another Chisle I never hardly use, have one but not in bags, 7/14 skil saw, Hitachi nail gun
My Occidentals had the same problem with my catspaw so I rapped tape around my catspaw to keep it from sliding out and to keep it from bumping into my leg as well cuz I carry a 14 inch catspaw just a preference I guess comes handy wen I have to pry something Nd makes nail pulling a lot easier
My tool belt was the 808 oxylight framer set. Green, someone stole from the site I am on here in Vancouver; now my other tool belt Kunys leather belt is what I use it is Kuny's Deluxe Component Carpenter Apron. 💔😪💔 it is nice. Someone enjoying the occidental free of charge. The diamond back tool belt is the rolls Royce of tool belts. I would say try a estwing 12" nail bar with the blue grip. The grip is nice, +plus, its super good for pivoting walls. 👍 One other thing. This video, my wife will see. So maybe a future gift. 😊
I have a Taurus tool belt. It's pretty much the main belt available on the shelves here in New Zealand. Can order USA belts but they cost a arm and leg to buy and ship here lol
I carry the cats paw in the diamondback gun loop that I clip to the side of my left side pouch. The top is stiff enough that the eswting hex catspaw doesn't slip out.
If you sew another line of thread into the cats paw holder, you can shrink the diameter of the hole so it will hold the tool tighter and not allow the hooked end to fall through 👍
I'm a trim carpenter. I have a Diamondback from about 20 years ago when they were getting started. I went to more of a framing setup for trim. I just like the bags better. Dont remember the brand.
Swanson speed square, Stanley fat max 30ft, stiletto nail bar, dewalt 1 1/4 chisel, stiletto tb 3, pica dry pencil , tajima chalk line, and a little book to write measurements
Best thing about the diamondbacks I see is they make truly lefty bags and they are the only option I see that I like. The oxys are limited for south paws
Wow I can not believe you gave away a Martinez square. Hope it was for a good reason. They are coming out with a mini square soon. I bought the Diamondback Denali framers belt because someone was selling it for $300 new on eBay. The suspenders were too expensive so I bought a $10 vented pair from Menards and they do not get that hot. I have a Deluge hammer as well, Dewalt tape and knife, love the Milwaukee chalk line $8 at Depot. I have a dead on cats paw and added a Bosch laser measuring device. Pencil I use the Swanson always sharp with Swanson square. I have a small Stabila level. Sometimes I put in my Milwaukee impact driver for lags. I also can carry the Hitachi cordless framing nailer. Love the Makita cordless saw as well.
Randy Velasquez he has the artisan. The Denali is bigger because it has more pockets. Which sounds good but they are narrow and hard to get items out. Plus the bag at the end you really need to reach for, almost need longs arms to use it. I got a deal with $180 off on eBay so I bought that one. Yet if I would recommend one I would go for the Grande. Less bags but they are way bigger and easier to get tools and fasteners in and out of. R&R renovators, which also has a TH-cam channel, made a video because he developed the product. Badger also makes a really good belt too.
As a concrete framer I dont carry a lot of tools. In my vest i carry: 20oz est wing, 8 meter kapro tape, a pencil, a sharpie, chalk line, drill bits, nails and safety glasses. I climb on 330cm racks all day gotta be light on my feet!
How did you start off your career? I remodel houses for a realitor from demo to finish. But would love to master a trade and I am really interested in framing 👍
I use a rig from home depot for framing and finish work plus a nail clip holder I also used it to hold my pry bar a water bottle holder and extra hammer holder thAt quick describe of my tool rig
Knife Speed Square Ox nail puller Chalk line 8m tape Siding bevel That's it, that's all you need Depends person to person. Keeping it light weight is so key.
I use the McGuire-Nicholas leather tool belt setup - having a local leather worker make leather suspenders for them. I like my setup but there’s a few things I would change
Still swing a 23oz Douglas hammer anybody that sees it always asks where I got it from. Had it for years but I don’t frame houses anymore. Miss framing big time. Now I’m a carpenter for a public transportation company.
Matt, I sport the Occidental 5191. I like wearing them on the hips and not high over the waste like the Diamondbacks. BTY I also have a Douglas original hammer. If you are parking your Buckaroos, let’s deal.
Matt I am also a TH-camr and watch all your videos , however I have to ask why you do not use the Huber zip system ? This is a question even local builders can't answer , other than customers just won't spend the money , maybe this would be a video idea for you to explain this system and other air tight and no bug systems to your viewers , keep making the videos I love them !!!
I would love to explain it on here! Main reason is it’s special order as of right now, it’s not readily available. If it was, I’d be happy to try it out.. One thing I don’t like, is if I do the framing, and I’m responsible for taping.. The siding contractor does a botched job and it leaks, I now have a chance at being blamed.. I’d have to rewrite my contracts if using it. I’m intrigued by it! I’d like to use it.
@@MattBangsWood That makes sense, I just did a 24x48 shop with it , tape is expensive so is the liquid flash, but here in the midwest it is worth it , also I get a lot of comments about using structural screws vs nails, and the biggest one , using non Coated fasteners in treated lumber , thanks for the response and I a looking forward to you addressing some of these !!!

Hi Matt I’m the owner of Shaffer Construction Hull / Norwell Ma I’ve owned Douglas hammers for over 15 years Conrad Douglas Is making his hammers again I receive emails all the time from Conrad I own 3 20 oz curved claw 1 trim hammer trying to get him to make me handles , I wanted to thank you for your Buckaroos demo I just purchased a belt system from them , After years of wearing Occidental systems they always slide down hopefully I have better luck with Buckaroos
Dude sweet new bag! I’m trying to get mine setup a lot like yours. One thing I didn’t see was a quick CAT or wraps tourniquet on your belt. At least maybe a quick trauma for fast bleeds. Not downing your bag but it never hurts to be prepared
Hey man I enjoy watching your videos a lot, if you ever get the chance to do a review on a pair of framer boulder bags, I would highly encourage it. I use the pro framer boulder bags and they are extremely lightweight, durable, and roomy. And I haven’t seen any reviews on TH-cam for them
Square 14oz stiletto Chalk line Calc Pencil & Marker 25' tape 35' seem to not last as long Stair gauges Cats paw(nail puller) Nail set And 16's hand pounders
Love your videos, I’m a 17 year old who does all construction by myself, I can’t afford to buy half the tools I hear about I mostly fill my boxes with harbor freight crap! Would love to take those extra chisels off of you for a penny since I understand u don’t use them like I would
OMG no way, THANK YOU SO MUCH! I can’t even express how thankful I would be and how excited I am to hear from you. As a young builder yourself, there is no greater inspirational thing to me than watching you build away and Bang away. I am fascinated and inspired by you it shows just how much you can do when u put your mind to it and hussle. I recently built a outdoor storage shed after being so anxious to frame from watching all your videos. It came out surprisingly nice however I had some obstacles in the middle. The biggest being the tools necessary to build that I didnt own. I ended up having to pay one of my neighbors $200 to get access to his tool collection for the building of my shed and when I was done with them I had to clean all of them and return it perfectly. My parents were very angry about this but unfortunately I had no other choice as I couldn’t afford all the tools necessary. Probably the worst part about it though was that while I was cutting the sheathing( that I got from my old boss ) the advantech was too thick and heavy that it knocked over his table saw and damaged it. Leaving me to pay $100 for it to be repaired and serviced. After such a terrible experience with the shed build my parents basically swore to me that I would never build anything again until I get enough money to pay for all the tools and materials by myself. So u can understand how excited and anxious I am to revive tools that are not only an amazing gift but a gift from my biggest building inspiration. Feel free to email me @ brachifeder@gmail.com I’d love to speak with you
I am closer to Matt’s age, but a form based guy. Let me tell you, neither of us started with this stuff. You don’t need it but it makes it nice. If you make an apprentices wage I’d look into getting yourself good power tools.
@@kickyourfaceandlaugh607 the versatility seems to be better with diamondback. My OCC. Set. Is cloth. Price tag scares me a little. Appreciate the time responding! Thank you.
Could you ever do a uncut video that's a whole work day so that the people that love your work could see move for move? That would be for the people who really want to learn from a pro ..
Couldn’t go without them
Two recent additions to my bags that are game changers are a bosch laser distance finder and electronic angle finder.

This was an essential video for DIYers like me. Very helpful coming from the man himself.

Killin it bro love this kinda stuff and the tool reviews 🙌🏽
Hi Matt I’m the owner of Shaffer Construction Hull / Norwell Ma I’ve owned Douglas hammers for over 15 years Conrad Douglas Is making his hammers again I receive emails all the time from Conrad I own 3 20 oz curved claw 1 trim hammer trying to get him to make me handles , I wanted to thank you for your Buckaroos demo I just purchased a belt system from them , After years of wearing Occidental systems they always slide down hopefully I have better luck with Buckaroos
That cats paw deserve to sit in some Occidental Leather bags.
Kick Ass... Had mine for a couple years
Love my Occidentals I have 3 sets just becausehahaha
I agree, I just made the jump to occidental adjust to fit fat lip system and its amazing has a spot for pretty much every tool i need thru out the day
O.L are the best, 👍 😁🔨 🇺🇸 🇮🇪
Representing the central coast
Dude sweet new bag! I’m trying to get mine setup a lot like yours. One thing I didn’t see was a quick CAT or wraps tourniquet on your belt. At least maybe a quick trauma for fast bleeds. Not downing your bag but it never hurts to be prepared
Been working for 9 years framing, never had any injuries. Just think about what you’re doing keep your mouth shut and work.
I remember mine back in the days it was the same but just I had a gram of coke and always a beer on there. Good thing I'm done with that
The Matt bangs signature hammer spin
Hey man I enjoy watching your videos a lot, if you ever get the chance to do a review on a pair of framer boulder bags, I would highly encourage it. I use the pro framer boulder bags and they are extremely lightweight, durable, and roomy. And I haven’t seen any reviews on TH-cam for them
I wear occidental leather 9540 adjust to fit but I’m really interested in the diamondbacks joiner set up
Square
14oz stiletto
Chalk line
Calc
Pencil & Marker
25' tape 35' seem to not last as long
Stair gauges
Cats paw(nail puller)
Nail set
And 16's hand pounders
You should make a trim tool belt setup
Hi thanks. You had me sold at “ Feels like you’re in a race car” Lol 😂 Great video saw you on crazy framer !
Love your videos, I’m a 17 year old who does all construction by myself, I can’t afford to buy half the tools I hear about I mostly fill my boxes with harbor freight crap! Would love to take those extra chisels off of you for a penny since I understand u don’t use them like I would
Let me get a few bundled up.
You should do a video sometime on how to cut stair stringers
Matt or anyone out there? How does diamond back, compare to Occidental leather. Just curious? Just heard of Diamondback. Michigan carpenter.
@@kickyourfaceandlaugh607 the versatility seems to be better with diamondback. My OCC. Set. Is cloth. Price tag scares me a little. Appreciate the time responding! Thank you.
yo matt keep up the hard work cheers
Yay dimondback sound good
Why did you throw away the second stair gauge? Save it for when you loose another, that way you’ll have a set again.
It’s somewhere in the Jobox on-site! If I kept track of them long enough I’d have multiple sets.
I work at a lumber yard and always lose my pencil..Got these clips you put on the side of your hardhat..game change for me
Occidental leather all the way, the tools just fit better , the leather is light weight and durable. Worth every penny.
Noticed the buckaroo video is 4 years ago and this is 3. What happened to it? Just curious
Hell yeah what part of cencal? I’m from pismo beach
Idk if you know them or not but I framed for mike Jones construction out of nipomo. Our GC was Kevin hunstead
Love you videos brother
Does anyone know of another company that had the hammer sleeve under the pouch? I want to try that but diamondback’s are too pricey for me.
Get rid of the hart cats paw and get yourself an estwing it comes with a blue grip on it cut it off and best catspaw that reasonably priced.
And what does all that weight?? Does it weigh you down too?
Matt, will you have a video on building a slant roof with a bird mouth?
@mattbangswood you say its a 1-1/2 chisel but the big chisel in that set is only 1"...which one do you prefer?
U should get the cats paws sheeth for your left side
What are your goto work pants I always struggle to find a decent pair of work pants and shorts here in Australia
I don't know if you be interested but there's a guy in British Columbia that makes custom bags. Akribis leather I think he has TH-cam channel as well
What happen to the beach house make more videos keep up the good work
Hola necesito eso mismo, donde lo compro???, saludo desde santiago de chile
Could you ever do a uncut video that's a whole work day so that the people that love your work could see move for move? That would be for the people who really want to learn from a pro ..
Have you tried the new Diamondback silver suspenders?
Hello, I want to buy your tool belt, can you give me the link, I am Taiwanese, thank you
Where do your screws go? I use 4-5 different screws when framing buildings.
Have you tried the dead on tools belt
What are your thoughts on occidental leather belts?
Do you go true to size or should I go up size @mattbangs wood
nice set up,why the chisel?? Similar to mine except I usually have a plumb bob with 25' of line.
Where do you keep your gun?
Have you ever tried the clc's nail bags
