My husband was a patient. I and a hospital employee, a young woman, were on each side of the counter to pay for our meal, with the cashier alternating between the two lines. The other woman was first, and couldn't find her payment card. When she could find only $2 in cash, panic immediately hit her eyes. Clearly, she was both hungry and rushing to get her meal, perhaps, this being her first opportunity to eat. Now, my husband and I were really struggling. And one could look at my appearance and know we didn't have much. But I had enough to be sure she didn’t go hungry, and immediately told the cashier to put the young woman's meal on mine. The young lady immediately objected. I replied, "I can’t have you going hungry." The panic left her eyes and she thanked me, immediately followed by a promise to pay me back. I waived her off, and told her to buy lunch for someone else sometime. She cocked her head, with gentle light in her eyes, and nodded. Now, this was before the "pay-it-forward" movement. But I had often been the recipient of other's kindness, and knew how much it could mean. And the thing is that you could look at this woman's face and know that she possessed the same kind of compassion, and would not have hesitated to do the same for another. But it was as if she never expected a complete stranger to treat her with like kindness. I could tell that it touched her in a way that would never leave her. Consequently, her appreciation touched me in a way that reminds how important it is to share kindness - even just a smile - when crossing paths with others.
