The machines can see each other because of NetBios, but File Shares for Windows 9x only support SMB 1, which is disabled in newer Versions of Windows 10. But there are further problems, because Window 9x also uses old NTLM-Logins with very weak encryption, which are also blocked by default. The easiest way would be to just use a FTP-Server like FileZilla Server or just use the Raspberry Pi. (Windows never had a modern/secure FTP-Client/-Server, even Windows 10 doesn't support encrypted connections. So there are no compatibility issues.) TFTP would also be a good alternative solution.

This is correct; I still transfer files between my Windows 3.11 and 95 machines over SMB 1.0 to Windows 10. Also, I find it easier to just set static IPs and refer to those on the network rather than relying on netbios to find the host names.

I do that (in the form of SFTP) for transferring files from my Linux PC to my Android mobile, as USB transfers seem to be borked on my mobile

    • @YayaVT
      @YayaVT 3 ปีที่แล้ว

do you mean file transfer on the PC itself (like showing the mobile storage as a drive) or do you mean connecting thumbdrive / external hard disk?
if it's the latter, it might be that your thumbdrive / external hard disk is in format that android don't recognize, like NTFS
there's third party android app out there that can help you to connect those NTFS or other formats to your phone (the phone will not recognize it when plugged in but that app will pick it up and create some kind of bridge to your android file explorer), but it's software based and not that stable... those formats are just not natively supported
source: I actually used that app back then when my laptop was broken, to continue watching anime off my 1TB NTFS hard disk on my phone... but I don't use it anymore when I have a PC so I don't remember the actual name of the app

On the control panel, you probably need to switch to the old encryption used for the network shares.
Also, the printer probably didn't recognize the card because it is formatted in ex-FAT by default.
If you try to format in FAT32, it should probably show on the network share.

About that network transfer stuff: the version of file sharing used by Windows 98 is a bit crap.
Following limitations apply: It is SMBv1 only, whereas latest version of SMB is 3. Also all usernames and passwords must be set to the current user on the 98 system.
Unfortunately Microsoft removes SMBv1 support in the latest versions of Windows 10. Remember WannaCry? That was a bug in SMBv1.
So how can you transfer files via Windows File Sharing to/from a 98 PC? Use either Linux/BSD or Windows 7 at the other end. Or make an FTP server instead.

Retro networking tip: Windows 98's version of SMB is 1.0, and that was deprecated and disabled by default in the latest versions of Windows because it is insecure. Getting Filezilla and creating a little FTP server that you can start on demand is just much easier, and you can even transfer files to/from a DOS machine with packet drivers and mTCP painlessly.

Windows file sharing works when it wants to. I'd go with FTP since its easy to find old versions of filezilla, and you don't have to worry about the Eternalblue vulnerability with leaving SMBv1 enabled.

Newer windowses use SMBv2 and above, you should be adding SMBv1 through "Add or remove Windows Features" secondly change your network share settings on the newer machine to "Enable file sharing for devices use 40- or 56bit encryption".
The reason that it worked on your router because somehow manufacturers delay the switch to new standards on SMB

I used to watch and rate TH-cam videos on a Win 98 SE computer (because I was slow to update to Win XP). The only reason why it wouldn't work to upload directly from the Windows 98 computer (without Browservice) is that browsers for Win 98 haven't been updated in years. However, I wouldn't be surprised if some clever person found a way around that and managed to upload a video.

So, from my personal experience as I have a Windows 98 machine on my local network as well, you have to actually type in the IP address of the computer instead of the name as viewed by the network. I've also found that sometimes Windows 10 doesn't like the connection and will refuse to make it, but if you ping it, Windows 10 will then allow you to connect. You can't connect to Windows 10 from 98, but you can connect to 98 from 10...for file transfer that is, even if both folders are open for public read/write.

You need KernelEX - With that you can use Opera and actually display TH-cam and upload it. It patched the 98SE Kernel to run newer Windows Applications such as XP or 7

You can thank WannaCry for networking drives not working. WannaCry resulted in Microsoft blocking SMB1 protocols from modern Windows in both directions.

There's an unofficial USB driver for Win98 that lets you plug in any USB flash drive into your PC. It works with my modern USB 3.0 flash drive.
And when you share folders between Windows 10 and Windows XP or older, you should enable SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support in Windows 10 for client and server.

  • @henry9174
    @henry9174 2 ปีที่แล้ว

To do networking between win9x and win10, you will run "optionalfeatures.exe" and enable "SMB 1.0/CIFS file sharing support". Only then you could access your win9x share folder from your win10 machine. This does not work the other way around since win9x fails to prompt user login window, thus win10 doesn't allow access.

someone might have commented this already, but there might, I repeat MIGHT, a workaround to the blockade of embedded networks. if Goggle blocked you the same way they did all non-google signed apps, then there is a setting in account security that goes something like "less secure app access" that you can enable and might allow you access

this is what I did once to copy large files to a w98 machine (like 10k of ripped mp3s and an old radio automation software): I copied the desired files on an Android device then used an app called ES file explorer and his ftp server function to share the sd card; typed the ftp address on a super old build of firefox... and it didn't work, so I used an old version of Filezilla to get it done. You may think it's slow because the Android device is over wifi but this machine had ethernet speed connection, not even fast ethernet and it was maxed most of the time which sorta falls into a class 4 sd card's speed

Easiest way for me to transfer files between modern and legacy machines is with FTP. Serve an FTP service on the modern PC and connect to it on legacy machine either using the web browser or an FTP client. Used this to transfer Printshop Deluxe pictures from Mac OS 7 to Windows 10.

The network issues are probably because Win98 uses SMB1.0 as its sharing protocol, which is disabled by default in Win10 due to security concerns. This will cause issues regardless of which OS hosts the share. Enabling SMB1.0 in Win10 has solved the same issue for me.

The network thing is weird, at work we have an old 98 PC, and we access it's shared folders from Windows 10 without issues. But Windows 10 does't support such an old protocol by default and it had to be enabled manually.

Windows home networking often has issue. Often because of netbios names.
You can often instantly connect using the ip address instead of the name.
Except in newer windows, you get blocked of by security stuff.

When accessing shared folders on the 98 PC or vice versa, make sure its set to 48bit without a password and instead of clicking the computer through the network list, directly put the full path in.
    Example: \\98-pc\share
    or
    \\10-pc\share
It only seems to work that way for some reason, dunno why
