When The Yankees-Red Sox Rivalry Peaked

- The Yankees-Red Sox rivalry goes back to 1919 when Babe Ruth was sold to the Yankees for $100,000. For the rest of the century, the Yankees were the best franchise in baseball while the Red Sox were a team of misfortunes plagued by the curse of the bambino. From the 1946 World Series to 1967 to Bucky Dent to Bill Buckner to the 1999 ALCS, the Yankees always found a way and the Red Sox didn't. But things changed after 2003 when Aaron Boone sent the Yankees to the World Series with a walk-off home run. The Red Sox would come back from a 3-0 deficit over the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS and would go on to win the World Series to break their curse. With the fights, hatred, and level of play, 2003-2004 was the absolute peak of the rivalry.

My grandmother lived Middleboro, Massachusetts. She born in 1910, so she was 7 or 8 when they last won the Series. She was 93 when all of this happened, I called her house the next afternoon. All she said was, "I can die now!" She passed away 2 months later. No bullshit
My great gma was born in 1920 and went her whole 84 years before she got to see them win, she died two years ago at 102 and was blessed to be able to see them win it 3 more times
My gg was born 1914 and was scared she would die after 04 but made it 4 more to see #2 and passed in 2009
Godbless these Red Sox women ❤
@@emceesleftovers2870 that generation of Sox fans are strong as hell, I feel spoiled that in my 30 years of life I have been blessed to see them do it 4 times out of
the "dave roberts came out of the dugout to take kershaw out of the game" joke had me laughing for way too long
Yeah I was really confused about this thanks for explaining
I was a big Red Sox fan since 1995. That was the year Mo Vaughn won the MVP and the Sox lost against the Indians in 3 games in the ALDS. But from then, I was hooked. This is the best rivalry in baseball, if not all of sports. Those two years in 2003-2004 were peak as you said. I totally agree that Aaron Boone probably wouldn't be the Yankees manager if not for that HR in 2003.
‘95 was the year I became a real Sox fan. My fav player was Tim Nehring lol. Big Mo was a beast, though. He hit a grand slam the first time I ever went to a game at Fenway.
I absolutely can’t stand the Sox but man oh man I loved Big Mo!
I've been a Red Sox fan since I was 5. In 1994 I moved to the Seattle area and in 1995 the Mariners had a magical season that I got completely engulfed in. When Boston came to town I was so excited to see the Sox play. I stood outside the Kingdome to get MO's autograph. When they came out to get in their bus they were in a single file line and I saw Mo. I had my Red Sox baseball and asked him to sign my ball. He shook his head no and I was bumbed out bad. Down the line I saw Jose' Conseco and he gladly signed my ball. I thought that was cool, but I wanted Mo Vaughn's. It was bittersweet but I still have that Conseco ball!
@@joelwatts5260 Can-stinko, as he was affectionately referred to by my ornery grandpa. He was decent overall for the two seasons he was here, but missed a lot of time on the DL. Haven’t thought about that in a long time, thanks for the sparking that memory😂
I like MO. I was at the Mets game when he hit the top of the score board. As a kid that completely blew my mind
Nostalgia right here. I was fresh in HS with the Boston Massacre. That rivalry from 03-07 was PEAK Baseball
Always and forever going to be a Yankee. But now the Red Sox Rivalry feels more like a Gentlemen’s Agreement duel more than anything.
But we can all agree on one thing.
Fuck the Astros
Fuck dem Stros. A Red Sox dynasty would be preferable to the Series getting another ring.
Hopefully, the Asstros don't even make the playoffs this year!
If anything, the Yankees, Red Sox, and Astros should be supportive of each other. After all, they’re all cheaters! Include the Dodgers too. Gotta stay ahead of the smaller markets somehow
Astros did nothing wrong
As a Red Sox fan I agree
20 years later and “don’t let us get one” still brings tears to my eyes.
-a forever grateful red Sox fan.
These are the teams I grew up on, this was a nice walk down memory lane. Thank you!
As a Yankee fan when I went to Fenway honestly it was such a fun experience it was more of a we hate you and we hate you too joke
It’s actually quite heartwarming
I feel the same way when I go to Yankee Stadium as a Sox fan. It’s fun to banter about how much we can’t stand each other with a wink and a nod.
@@deprosport7254 and the crazy thing is
Ted Williams and Jimmie Foxx are some of my favorite players ever and they were both Red Sox’s
@@JackCallSports tbh the only Yankees I can say that are unhateable are Matsui and Judge lol I’ll need to make an exception for my Dominican brother Soto though
@@deprosport7254 FACT 😂
And here’s something too I’ll say without hesitation
Not only was Williams better than DiMaggio
But a way WAY better person
@@JackCallSports man you might be the only honest Yankee fan alive 🤣
Bill Mueller was always my favorite and insanely underrated. Silver slugger and AL batting champion in 03’ and only guy to ever hit two grand slams in a game, one from each side of the plate (also had a solo HR that game). Career 291 avg. Wore #11 as a kid because of him.
Growing up in Westchester, NY, and New England at this time, given the greatness of these teams and their games, and all of the great players/coaches on both sides, I didn't realize it at the time, but this might actually be the peak of sports in my lifetime. This was a nice trip down memory lane.
Man from the steroid era to the end of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry was the very best time to watch baseball. Unfortunately there’s no rivalries like this anymore. Dodgers/Giants, Cubs/Cards, Yanks/Sox have all lost their edge. Yanks/Astros never had a true benches clearing heated moment during their “rivalry”. The only hope of another hot rivalry is Phils/Braves
I was a month old by the time they won in 2007, I was born at the hospital just a block away from Fenway. I’m often thanked and credited with the win from family 😂
While he wasn’t on the championship team, I believe Nomar was given a ring when the Red Sox won in ‘04.
I'm almost 100 percent certain he got a "share" which means he got a ring.
Jimmie Foxx? He didn't play for Boston until 1936!
Given the current state of Boston sports it’s just insane to me to think that my grandfather was born and then died before he could see the Sox win a World Series
Was in college in New England from 2003-2007, and this rivalry was a definitive part of that experience. Awesome video man it was great to reminisce.
Man I was 10 years old in 2004 and just started watching baseball as a yankee fan, watching my father as a die hard yankee fan it made me one. That red sox comeback had me crying for days, but seeing it now its incredible how they came back from being down 0-3
Love the video! Just a heads up tho. Jimmie Foxx didn't play for the Red Sox until the 1930s. Small correction though.
Man I was intrigued to learn about this rivalry. Wasn’t expecting to catch so many strays as a Minnesota fan lol
I'm a Yankee fan, and if Varitek and ARod were fighting, I would still root for Varitek. Always liked him.
But that was such a punk move. You want to go at a guy, so be it. But removed your protective gear. Starting a fight while still wearing your catchers mask is weak.
Varitek was a jerk!
So judging by the ending, the Dodgers are going to spend the next 80 years terrorizing the Red Sox and the 2104 World Series will be the greatest World Series ever (and I mean so good that it will almost make 2016 look like a snoozefest by comparison).
I was a young Yankees fan in 2004, and seldom have I felt pain like I felt after the ALCS that year. That planted the seed of a lifetime of beef towards the Red Sox lol. Definitely hated seeing them win the World Series that year and then three more by 2018 while we've only managed to get one in the last 15 years.
same lol had me crying as a 10 year old
Yea but we had like 5 or six since the 90s sooo
Rip tim Wakefield
aye bro great content! love it. just fyi tho there are multiple discrepancies between what you are saying and the scoresheets shown, etc. may want to double check the edits to ensure full cohesion but again, great watch 💪
Music on point! Great video
Kevin Millar started the whole “Don’t let us get one” thing. There’s an interview where he says it
And I am a big Mets fan and I hate when the Yankees beat the Mets in 2000
As a Yankee fan Mets were so cocky but y’all end up choking in the 2015 World Series
Man those were the days!
This rivalry defines my baseball fandom. The 04 Red Sox made me a fan for life.
Watch four days in October(Red Sox 04)
@@Trimusa “Why not us?” Of course I’ve seen that brother lol
Lots of Sports Guy references in the vid, nice.
Good video, but if you'll allow one honest critique: It was hard for me to keep track of the years/eras during the first 10 minutes because you kinda just mention the year once in an otherwise extremely long sentence of explanation (which is fine as a style, but a few more graphics focusing on the year in question would go a long way).
The drama in the events speak for themselves... just give them a chance to do so is all I'm saying. Otherwise great vid! As a young Gen-X, this was a great nostalgia trip! 😀
If you think Boston v NYY rivalry is more hate-fuelled than any in the world, you should check out the Old Firm in Glasgow or the Belgrade Derby.
Good video brother!
Glad to have watched the peak in real time. Great time for Boston 😂
Good channel
We had tickets to the first spring training game in 04 standing room people were offering 250 a ticket when we were walking up we didn't sell what a mistake nothing happened nobody important played and it was super hot.
Staring Kevin Brown and Javier Vasquez sealed it for us in game 7 ( still salty about it )

Nice humour!
The end of the video is scaring me
2004 was the greatest baseball season of my life, and I'm a Mets fan. Pretty sad, I know.
22:21 “Fun too” 😂
Vivaldi was peak. Well played.
03 was CRUSHING. 04 was so amazing that it ruined baseball for me.
Go ROYALS!!
Jimmie foxx didn’t play in Boston until 1936 1:43
Haven't watched yet but its 2003-2004 right?
Jimmy Foxx didn’t play in the 1910’s.
Interesting background music.
Go Yankees.
Lmfao I was a NY Mets fan hate watcher 😂
Still am
And as a Mets fan, I guess there's little else for you to do.
Go, Yankees!!!!!!
@@waynej2608Go Yankees!! To Cancun after getting eliminated in the ALCS again!
Mets fans will root for Boston if the Mets don’t make the playoffs while the redsox are in
“Yankees legend Randy Choate”
2004 Sox got Keith Foulke to stabilize the bullpen in addition to Schilling
Great video but I would appreciate not catching strays as a Twins fan
Jimmy Foxx wouldn't play for the Red Sox for decades after Ruth was on the team.
The cardinals cubs rivalry could be a good one too
As a orioles fan i have to see this mussina you traitor 😂
This is incredibly well done. (And I don’t even care, I’m a Tigers fan. Seriously, kudos)
and then the Red Sox said they were gonna chill in the 2010s against the Yankees. And then a certain Venezuelan second baseman and a team in Houston decided it was their turn to bully the Yankees around in the 2010s playoffs
I'll go with the Tigers as well. 3 playoff meetings that Detroit won all of.
I fell like the texas rangers are cursed, besides last year they couldn't win October even with soild players and struggled in the postseason
Naw they just have always sucked
They just won a ws lol. Cleveland is cursed. Seattle.
The phillies are cursed. Took 97 years to win a world series with only 2 championships in 140 seasons.
They're not cursed any longer. It's what happens when you have confidence, ownership and general manager and especially a manager who knows what he's doing. Bruce bocce is probably the best signing they ever have done. I'm absolutely shocked because prior to last season I would have agreed with you but not anymore
Doesn’t matter cause the Rangers are the reigning World Series Champions!
Great video
Pop Rocks the most dangerous candy ever.
Best baseball season sox vs Yankees
Not to mention the Red Sox had first shot at signing both Jackie Robinson and Willie Mays, but turn them both down because of rasicm
The Astros has taken over the rivalry.
The Yankees-Sox rivalry is the best American rivalry but not the best in all of sports
Bucky Dent 😂👍🏼
The Lakers vs celtics rivalry is the best in all of sports
Lakers fans might be mad if Boston wins the nba finals
After the 04’ season the Rivalry has been one sided… Boston 4 chips , Yankees 1
Boston only needs like 18 more chips to catch up 😅
It's wild to think there are people old enough to drive and vote who have zero recollection of any Yankees titles.
@@colinrankin1659Yeah, anything before the 90s doesn’t count. Plumbers and segregation titles aren’t valid.
Here’s a dishonorable mention the NY giants defeating the undefeated patriots in Super Bowl 42
🐍 thank you 2001 dbacks
I’m a yankee fan, but what did Zimmer expect? Pedro did nothing wrong…
the best rivalry in sports is the toronto maple leafs.
Vs what winning a modern championship?
Great video, but please look for a pronunciation guide next time. Lucchino, Mueller, and Mientkiewicz all mispronounced.
Dude talks to fast would recommend 0.75 speed
red sox won the connor wong trade
I hate the Yankees so much
The redsox are dillisonal and the Mets are cocky
The 2 most racist teams 💯
It's so fucking annoying hearing the phrase "curse of the bambino".....THERE WAS NO CURSE FFS
You get that it is just colorful language right? Nobody literally thinks there was a curse against the Red Sox. Seems like a weird thing to get so annoyed by. If somebody says "it's hotter than Hell out there today", do you get annoyed because Hell is fictional?
@@snerdtergusonthere’s a new curse in the 21st century for the Yankees I guess the curse of George Steinbrenner since his death the Yankees hadn’t won another World Series. Hate to say this but the redsox are developing players and I see them wining another one in the next couple of years
