    He's got the character needed for a solo explorer on Mars. Quiet, resourceful, a self-directed learner and handy with a musical instrument, those are the traits you'd need if you were on an outpost on another world.

    So strange to see what have become of Pyramiden.
    I visited Pyramiden back in -91 when I served in the Norwegian navy.
    It's one of the most fascinating communities I've ever visited, because they welcomed us with open arms in a time we were told that Sovjet was our great enemy.

I watched this already a few months back and must say that since then when I listen sometimes to "Born to die"... his cover in that room at the end of the world comes to mind :-). Take care Sasha. The dream of millions people, russian people who was sick of Monarchy, they believed they could create a country with no borders to science, equality, education, culture . . . but the dream was false, the world was not ready, people were not ideal, so everything collapsed. And this dream is as rundown and sick as a piano on which he plays the hymn of the Soviet Union.

      The original name is Pyramiden, which it's also known by internationally. It was established by Sweden in 1910, hence the spelling, but sold to the Soviet Union in 1927.
      And it's not that desolate. There is a hotel there, and regular tourist traffic. It's also just 50 kilometers north of Longyearbyen, which is the administrative center of Svalbard, Norway, with a permanent civilian population of 2,144 people and an international airport.

Unbelievable that this lonley soldier is that friendly and open. Really nice place, super far off, hard to visit. Certainly no Internet and radio/TV there - people could get mentally sane again just by staying there for a year or so. Would be interesting to get some of the former citizens telling their stories. @DeathBringer769 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      While "Soviet hymn" isn't technically wrong, I feel like it's vastly understating it. What he was playing was the Soviet/Russian *national anthem* (the tune is still their Russian national anthem, but the lyrics have changed since the Soviet days.) It's like if you heard someone playing/singing the US national anthem, and you went "Ah, love how he played that one random American folklore/history song." While not technically wrong, it's not how you would normally phrase it if you're fully aware of what it is and the significance it has or had to an entire country, lol ;)

  • @Dmytrenko
    @Dmytrenko 7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    The buildings are made our of brick, which is very rare and was done to make a statement about the might of the Soviet Union. In the Norwegian settlements all the building are wooden because brick is too expensive to transport. Also, there was a farm and the manure was used to fertilize the land, that's why some of the tallest grass on Svalbard still grows there (you can see it at 8:55). I don't think it made much economic sense to mine coal there. It's too expensive. The whole point of the mine was to have a presence and to demonstrate power. The Norwegians mostly mine coal for local consumption - that's how electricity is being generated.

    • @TheSystemaSystem
      @TheSystemaSystem 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      As a Norwegian: I don't understand your point? The reason we use wood is because it's readily available and importing brick isn't even an option. Why would you create brick houses in arctic climates? We mine coal from Svalbard, but it's very little, and in rapid decline. We consume 35% of it locally. The rest is sold off (I presume to Russia.) The reason Russia is keeping this economically nonviable ghost-town "active" is simply to have a claim on Norwegian soil...

    • @alenasuvorova1340
      @alenasuvorova1340 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Or it was done simply for people lived here. Bricks have better heat capacity qualities and look familiar for people from "mainland". And also it is important to keep people in good mood in the dull North, so there always were attentions to bring more colours and greenery to the urban environment.
