Inspired by the start of Sonic 2’s special stage music, I reckon. ;-) Also a great early example of what’s some people these days think of as “Tee Lopes style”, especially those jazzy brass improvs.

When I first heard this when I was a kid I thought it was a remix upgrade to Sonic 2's Special stage.
It pretty much is, it's the same bassline from Sonic 2's Special stage.
