I also liked the new Devangelic, Unearth, Spirit Adrift, Cloak, Creeping Death, Suffocation, Blackbraid, and Kvelertak albums too.

This Top 10 was pretty rough to figure out with the quantity and quality of the releases this year but I think my Top 10 definitely echo what really gripped me this year.
There were couple of surprises here especially Unearth, Kvelertak & Will Haven, will check it out. Otherwise, for first time in few years I felt inspired to make Top 10. The highlight of the year for me is probably this Vastum album, will see the verdict of time but for me that's the best DM album in many years: 1. Vastum - "Inward to Gethsemane" 2. Dodheimsgard - "Black Medium Current" 3. Trhä - "rhejde qhaominvac tla aglhaonamëc" 4. Acid King - "Beyond Vision" 5. Static Abyss - "Aborted from reality" 6. I just love what they do even if it's harder than hell to describe sometimes lol. Will Haven is just relentless, dark and heavier than hell. I love that album. You got some solid picks here. I love that Godflesh made it on the list. It seems that one flew under the radar for a lot of people. Acid King, Dodheimsgard and Vastum were all in the running but those 40 spots filled up quick.

The years run together so last 2 years lol, bloodbath, wreched fate, meshuggah, blackbraid, crowbar, calvera morbid visions rerecordings, immolation, cannabal corpse, eyehategod, dream unending. Last year I think had a better year imo. Missing one that is like a crunchy heavier immolation meets meshuggag what band was that from early this year? It was like immolation but with a,gated chugging more crisp crunchy tone but with Dolan like vocals and riffs.

Necrotic Nick- For me, I love all their albums. Yeah, the earlier stuff might have been heavier but I think their songwriting chops and ability to craft solid hooks is still the thing that draws me to them.
I thought that Cattle Decapitation album was great; personally I'm not the biggest fan of the "goblin vocals", though admittedly on this album there is more diversity. Technically impressive arrangements, performances, killer drums... but perhaps its the clean, glossy production that renders it less compelling to me as it should be. Blackbraid is good but his songs do tend to kind of blend in with each-other, kind of a grueling runtime on 2. I forgot to listen to that Suffocation thanks for the reminder. I forgot about Spirit Adrift, I should check that one out. Static Abyss is a cool band name btw, and I love me some death doom, I'll check that too. Nothingness should be on my best of list, I must have missed it when I compiled my spreadsheets!
Necrotic Nick- I was initially kinda put off by the "goblin vocals" when they started appearing more but I've gotten used to them to the point where I find them uniquely catchy. It really works with how dynamic the music is in general and while the production is a bit cleaner than I like with most death metal it give the all the elements room to breathe. I do think that Blackbraid does run a bit long but I liked how much bigger the songs were in terms of the scope of them so that was kind of a trade off there. I strongly recommend Spirit Adrift, Static Abyss and that new Suffocation and I'm hoping to see Nothingness show up on some other lists out there. That album is so damn good.
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, I've been hooked on that album since we reviewed it. There's been a lot of killer metallic hardcore that's dropped this year with Jesus Piece and Drain also leading the charge but Judiciary really stood out to me. Fantastic album.

I'm a father of 2 female musicians, and while I love my people, when it comes to the music, sometimes women get slighted in my own community. Its so nice this old head is seeing times change. Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Sadly Crypta didn't quite make it. It was damn close but the 40 spots started filling up quick. That was a great album though and honestly their strongest output yet. Honestly, I think we're starting to get past that stigma about women in metal a bit which is awesome. Stuff like that shouldn't matter in the first place but I'm happy to see people get past that.

It was like immolation but with a,gated chugging more crisp crunchy tone but with Dolan like vocals and riffs.
Necrotic Nick- Last year was solid but for me this had more killer releases where it was harder to make a list. I'm not sure which one you're talking about there. There were a lot of bands that dropped insanely heavy stuff this year.

I'll give the Kvelertak a go. I kind of gave up on them after original singer left.
Necrotic Nick- I've loved everything they've put out so far honestly. All their albums rule. They just have a sound that is pretty much their own and I love how they blend genres.

new Kvelertak is hard to get into when you used to love the old albums
Necrotic Nick- For me, I love all their albums. Yeah, the earlier stuff might have been heavier but I think their songwriting chops and ability to craft solid hooks is still the thing that draws me to them.
I thought that Cattle Decapitation album was great; personally I'm not the biggest fan of the "goblin vocals", though admittedly on this album there is more diversity. Technically impressive arrangements, performances, killer drums... but perhaps its the clean, glossy production that renders it less compelling to me as it should be.
Blackbraid is good but his songs do tend to kind of blend in with each-other, kind of a grueling runtime on 2.

I forgot about Spirit Adrift, I should check that one out. Static Abyss is a cool band name btw, and I love me some death doom, I'll check that too.
Nothingness should be on my best of list, I must have missed it when I compiled my spreadsheets!
Necrotic Nick- I was initially kinda put off by the "goblin vocals" when they started appearing more but I've gotten used to them to the point where I find them uniquely catchy. It really works with how dynamic the music is in general and while the production is a bit cleaner than I like with most death metal it give the all the elements room to breathe. I do think that Blackbraid does run a bit long but I liked how much bigger the songs were in terms of the scope of them so that was kind of a trade off there. I strongly recommend Spirit Adrift, Static Abyss and that new Suffocation and I'm hoping to see Nothingness show up on some other lists out there. That album is so damn good.

Necrotic Nick- Yeah, I've been hooked on that album since we reviewed it. There's been a lot of killer metallic hardcore that's dropped this year with Jesus Piece and Drain also leading the charge but Judiciary really stood out to me. Fantastic album.
To me the new dying fetus album is the best new cannibal corpse is great but to me the new dying fetus is the number 1 standout to me
Just in case the new Crypta falls here, I want to take the time to compliment your professional review of this band and that album. I'm a father of 2 female musicians, and while I love my people, when it comes to the music, sometimes women get slighted in my own community. Its so nice this old head is seeing times change. I showed them your review and said this is how your peers are supposed to talk to you. Thanks again guys.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Sadly Crypta didn't quite make it. It was damn close but the 40 spots started filling up quick. That was a great album though and honestly their strongest output yet. Honestly, I think we're starting to get past that stigma about women in metal a bit which is awesome. Stuff like that shouldn't matter in the first place but I'm happy to see people get past that.
I see a top 3 pick in this one.

Creeping Death: until you mentioned it I never saw that album cover as a butthole but now I do. Great album though, same with their release before it.
