Installing an Xtrons IQ70DLRL unit into my Freelander 2

  • This is a run-through of me installing an Xtrons IQ70DLRL head unit into my 2012 Freelander 2, as well as some of my thoughts on the unit.
    As noted in the video to access the factory settings the pin code is 126 - change settings at your own risk!!
    Also, note that my Freelander 2 didn't have the factory sat-nav. If yours does then you'll need to buy a MOST Fibre Optical Loop Female Connector to make the unit work.

    Thank you for a fantastic video! I also ran into the volume annoyance and your video is really helpful. Also thank you for pointing out the illumination wire 👍 I am still trying to figure out the reverse camera and can bus steering wheel controls. Didn't have much time to fully investigate when I put it in, but plan to take it out soon to wire up the illumination and will try to take a look at those two items again. Supposedly this unit has canbus leads on the harness, so in theory it should be possible to wire that up to the canbus coming into the stock head unit and learn the buttons that way.

      I had the same issue. I had the xtron unit installed, everything is working good. Gonna try to get the illumination wire connected next time. There are two additional cables provided with stickers showing key1 and key2, after looking at the xtron website wirings diagram. These two wires are supposed to be connected to steering wheel control keys. Most likely for the media track skipping. But I am not sure where I could hook it up. If you have the answer, please let me know.

      @@benyihu6979 that's interesting, I don't think mine had those extra wires. Maybe the unit has been updated since i bought mine. Mind you, I'd have no clue where to attach them as I believe the steering wheel switches are connected to the can bus?

    Thank you for this video. You showed how to change the default sound volume and now no more messing about with the volume slider. Thank you so much.

    Useful video thanks. I'm going to install one in my Freelander. But just a thought, what guage worse did you use for linking into the illumination wire? I want to get that all sorted on the install too.

    Good video Kev! Looking at the xtrons website it says these units are not compatible with the cubby hole models??? Did you just ignore this or am I missing something

    • @kevschannel
      @kevschannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      When I bought mine the ad said both the cubby and large screens (sat nav?) were compatible from 2007 to 2012. It was the small screen version that was not compatible. Unfortunately, the exact listing I bought has now expired, but this one has the same compatiblity pictures: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154873930994
      Hope this helps.

    I've installed the same unit, all works fine, my wireless android auto worked fine, reverse cam installed too. One thing I cannot figure out is how to change the kph to mph

    • @kevschannel
      @kevschannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On mine I just tap the speed on the screen to toggle between MPH and KPH. It does have an annoying habit of reverting back to KPH after a few days though, so I have to tap it again.

      I'm impressed that you got the wireless android auto working. Was there anything special you had to do to get it working? I've had no luck with it at all. I was wondering if the firmware could be updated, but I don't know where to get an update from.

      @@kevschannel you need Bluetooth and wireless turned on both your phone and the xtron unit, then on your phone tap on the xtrons Bluetooth handler to connect, I think the pin is 0000. For trouble shooting I'd maybe test if you can connect to your home WiFi from xtron device that way you know the WiFi cable is connected to the right terminal at the back of the unit, it maybe your android phones permissions

    Hi Kev
    Is the usb cable for dab connection behind the unit wired in I have three usb cables and wondered which one it is if you can understand where I am coming from also the unit doesn’t seem to line up properly with the holes on the centre console it’s a 2008 freelander 2 any thoughts as to what the problem may be
    Thanks
    Alan

    • @kevschannel
      @kevschannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alan.
      My Freelander already has a DAB radio so I didn't fit any DAB antenna. I'm not sure that mine even came with one. I don't know that it would be fitted to USB though? As far as I can tell all the USBs are the same. I just picked on at random to connect my phone to.
      For lining up, I remember that the bottom fixing can go on top or underneath. If I recall correctly, you need to make sure that the unit sits underneath the bottom fixing for it to line up correctly, if that makes sense.

    Hi Kev,
    Thanks for this video - we're looking for our first Freelander and I'm wondering if there's any difference in the "upgradability" of the XS and GS models. As far as I can tell, the only difference is the XS has better speakers but otherwise this upgrade would work the same and all features would still be available (phone on steering wheel, nav, etc).?
    Any pointers much appreciated!

    • @kevschannel
      @kevschannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As far as I know, the car models are not important. If it has the cubby above the radio then it should be fine. If there is a factory sat nav, then i dont think the wiring is compatible. The ones with the small screen i think are also okay, but you need to get a termination plug that is cheap enough to pick up. I don't think the xtrons unit works with cars newer than 2012 but it's best to check the advert as units may have improved since i bought mine.

    Afternoon Kev sorry to keep pestering you when I start up the car the head unit goes through it’s motions but ends up on the sat nav screen through my phone then I press car then bab radio the old unit which by the way was a XTRONS latter version that started straight away after seconds this as to go through its process first am I missing something
    By the way got speaker’s going

    • @kevschannel
      @kevschannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alan. I'm not sure I understand your question. My unit will go straight to Google Maps navigation if I plug my phone in to the USB, if that's what you mean? I think this is normal for Android Auto. I think you can exit android auto by pressing one of the buttons on the panel (can't remember which one). If I start the Xtrons unit without my phone plugged in, then it joust has the menu icons on screen.

      Make sure you have aux selected. You might need to increase the volume to be able to hear anything. The default setting is quite low. If that works, there is a section in the video showing how to make maximum volume the default.

    Can you use the speakers that came with the car or have you got to use the speaker it comes with your radio is different from mine being the hse mine is the gs with the basic radio I have used the black harness not the grey one any help would be appreciated

    • @kevschannel
      @kevschannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The xtrons audio connects to the radio's Aux input, which then uses the cars existing speakers. I didn't bother connecting the speaker that came with the xtrons in my set up.

    There is a kit you can get which will enable you to use the steering wheel controls with the xtron unit. Let me know if you fitted that or know anyone who has, I'm looking at buying this unit and I'd like to retain the steering wheel audio controls

    • @kevschannel
      @kevschannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn't aware of a kit being available when I got mine, so I can't tell you how well it might work. What I can tell you is that fitting the xtrons did not remove any functionality of my steering wheel controls.
      The volume buttons work and the other next/prev buttons continue to work with the radio, CD player and phone. The only thing that does not work is that the next/prev button does not do anything when the car is set to the AUX input (this is how the xtrons audio is connected). So to skip tracks etc on the xtrons I have to tap the buttons on the screen.
      I hope this helps your understanding. If you do try the kit, I'd be interested in knowing how well it works. It's a shame the xtrons doesn't work with the steering wheel controls (except the volume) out of the box, but I don't find it a problem as the screen is pretty easy to use and I like that the CD player, radio etc still work as they did before.

      Mine didn't come with any maps. I use Google maps when my phone is connected to android auto. For offline I've found installing petal maps onto the xtrons to be reasonably good as you can download the maps for offline use.
