I still remember the night of gta 5s release, being in the basement with my brother as we booted the game up on our original fat ps3 from 2006. After the screen cuts from black and you actually see the cutscene, we were blown away from how good and real the game looked. And I remember the same feeling after it was redone for ps4 in 2014.
I don’t think you guys understand how fucking technically impressive this game was back on PS3. I remember renting the game when it came out and was freaking mind blown at the texture quality, the NPC density, the lighting, all of it. It was such a huge step up from GTA IV and really pushed the boundaries of what those consoles were capable of. To this day, this game STILL holds up incredibly well on 7th gen consoles.

I still remember the exact scenes in which I was mind blown. at first, I was amazed by the animation quality of the NPCs how they felt so real compared to what we had prior to this game. Every movement had character to it. And secondly, it was the sewer lighting. The sewer which you passed through in the jewelery heist mission. There is this part of the sewer where it's all muddy everywhere and there's bright construction light shining on the tunnel and on the mud. I have never seen such realistic, looking lighting and texture quality and shaders on any game before that because it didn't exist before that at least not in a game. That part and the atmosphere and the sky of the game still amazes me to this day.

First played it on Xbox 360 in 2015. I was shocked the 360 could look that good and play so well. Very impressive. I played it on Xbox One a few years ago briefly. It's just not the same as the older consoles. Yeah, it looks great visually at 1080p and 60fps, but it's not the same. The game is made for the older consoles. The PS3 and Xbox 360 are amazing consoles. Still a lot of fun in 2024.

Geekerwan made a video showcasing that the Switch is capable of ps4 graphics (used box64 to play god of war 2017 and gta 5 and dmc 5) but nintendo deleted it when totk came out so people didnt realize that nintendo is lazy about pushing hardware to the limits

one thing i notice in gta v 10 years later is trevor holds the gun exactly same way as michel does in prologue, but not in the rest of the history. I wonder why?
Easy because both were inexperienced at that time and had trained equally and after Michael's fake death, both started differently and their personalities changed.
PS3 had a slightly lower average framerate than Xbox 360 during fast driving but better minimums and both consoles held 30FPS pretty decently anyway. Visuals were roughly the same and both managed 720p quite well. Xbox 360 suffered from install size limitations and largely read the game from the DVD. This gave it hitching and longer loadtimes as well as texture loading issues that were never really solved. The PS3 didn't have this limitation, and its larger HDD install size mostly alleviated these issues. PS3 also has better quality possibly lossless audio due to the size advantage of Bluray, and I believe some better textures or other assets as well. This was one of the rare cases where the PS3 version was probably a better experience overall. GTAV was a neat swansong title for the PS3 and especially with an SSD is still a very playable option for this game if you just want the core story. It was the console for my first playthrough and IMO still holds up pretty well to newer versions. The PS3 has been interesting to collect for. As I eliminate some titles with just much better versions available elsewhere, some seem to stick around. The PS3 had a lot of neat tech demo titles, and it was a nirvana for JRPGs just like PSX and PS2 before it.
I think people are quick to disregard the older version and treat it as it was bad or something. I think this version stands the test of time and shows what developers can do with older or weaker hardware. Especially today, where optimization is really important. Do you know if the PSN version is playable on an SSD? There are videos of the PSN version showing slow streaming issues and bad pop up. A SSD might be able to fix that. Just like you, I also played this on the PS3 10 years ago (we are getting old aren't we?) and it remains my favourite version of them all. Just like GTA San Andreas for the PS2, GTA V is what I consider a miracle version for the console it was released on. They used every trick in the book to make it work and despite the limitations they had to work with. I know its sounds dumb and I should really be careful what I wish for but I hope the next GTA game still releases on PS4 just so we can see what they can still do with the older hardware.

There's something special about the GTA 5 on last gen consoles (especially the PS3 version since it's the best) It's like the final product that the original author of the series wrote before passing away. Everything that Rockstar released after it is like his son trying to recreate his dad's art but not trying something unique on its own. Everything graphically is cooherent with each other in the original releases of the game. It was also a console defining game. It came in confidently in 2013, squeezed the every bit of power in the old gen consoles, ended their years and made a statement in all the media combined before the newer gen consoles got released. GTA SA did it too in its time and we respected the old Rockstar games for it's groundbreaking statements like this. Now, R* missed their chances on making GTA 6 the defining game for the PS4 era. Instead they stained the art of the original authors of GTA 5 by releasing it again in a way as if some kid photoshops a Da Vinci's art to make it more modern looking. Oh I agree with you. The effort they did for their older titles was not only impressive but ground-breaking. GTA San Andreas on the PS2 is by far the best version you can play (outside of the PC version with mods) as it was the original vision of the game. I still play that from time to time. Now GTA V on the older consoles feel the same way. The PS3 was a hard to program on and they still managed to use everything it has (SPE´s, disc and hdd streaming and so on) to bring us this masterpiece. It just feels wrong to disregard the older versions as being old, lacking content or not being worth it to be played. No, I think because its older, it HAS to be played just to see what it was like back then. That way people would appreciate the versions we have now. Doom 2016 and its sequel feel similar, both of them have no business on running on the Switch but with a lot of effort from the developer team, it really is great. The effort is greatly appreciated. We might never receive GTA VI on the PS4 but maybe, just maybe we might get it. So we can have another impressive effort on an older generation we can fondly look back to.

I played ps4 version for years then bought the same version for xbox one x (not the enhanced 4k version) and stopped it completely a year ago. I'm more of a story mode kinda guy so online died for me. Although I would play the f out of GTA IV remaster I doubt they can put out something respectful after this. Would love a GTA IV remaster (hopefully they do it themselves this time). Yeah I heard about that. We have to see how it will be and remember to keep your expectations in check. Well I think it will be a even bigger game than RDR2 was and that game was already bigger than GTA V. I think they will include the already features gameplay elements like first person mode. Hopefully they will ramp up gore a bit more like it was in the 3D GTA games and feature a ragdoll system similar to GTA IV instead of GTA V (which was downgraded from IV). The game world will be bigger and more detailed no doubt about that. I also hope they include the little details they did back in GTA IV like fail phone calls, alternative dialog and so on. I believe that it will be a good game and hopefully they will support singleplayer more than they did in V, where they shifted all the content to online. And for my last point: PLEASE, OH PLEASE THEY RELEASE DLC FOR SINGLEPLAYER. That has stuck with me ever since that they did a banger of a DLC for GTA IV and then completely scraped the singleplayer DLC for GTA V for GTA Online. That really got to me I have to admit. Anyway what do you think about GTA VI and what do you expect from it?

This was one of the most technically impressive moments on the PS3. How they got it to look THIS good on THIS system baffles me.

i honestly always thought the ps3 version looked like shit, but it's honestly better than I expected, snow deformation, and other visual features are still present, this is incredible for a 7th gen game

@@curiousmind_ coz u have crappy PC with intel hd graphics can't even run gta v on max. gta 5 maxed on PC looks like heaven. i go with PC version all day. ps3 looks rlly bad with all the jaggy edges and i have adhd which it will kill me 5 minutes of playing it

very impressive what they technically did with this game on the old consoles. sure it looks more jaggy running at that low res and there are certainly ps3/360 games that dont have that problem due to actually using real MSAA - but other than that this game still looks modern!
Love the game. But it's starting to show it's age, specially in lower end hardware like here.
It's still really impressive that it even works this well at all on this hardware.
