  • I have always thought this beat was nice and wished there was an instrumental version. I was able to take enough parts of the actual track and stitch them together to make an instrumental.

but that's a ROCK chord progression! that's a classic rock ballad chord progression. or the bass notes, if you prefer.
I guess so is a lot of Hip-Hop (like _Love the Way You Lie)_ but the reason this beat hits different than others - especially from that time - is because it's built on what you could call a pretty "corny" melodic progression on the bass. then, when they spit the harder verses on top, it creates a really interesting effect of tonal dissonance. sort of like a musical version of adding spices on something sweet, how that can taste so much better than something just sweet.
so it sounds harder because of the words, but you hear it just the instruments it's really pretty. here's a test for all you wannabe / gonnabe producers out there like me - take the Geto Boys verses of this song and put them onto a different instrumental, and I guarantee that 9.5/10 it'll sound way worse. it just won't hit the same. it'd have to be a HELL of a remix to sound better than this track does.
it's a great beat, obviously, but I'm really interested in what a difference it is without the verses on it. as a wannabe producer myself - and to all you out there doing just that - it's interesting to think about why we feel what we feel when great music drops. you know what I mean? sorry to drag. it's inspiring to listen to this.
