Love the dialogue and VTN’s authenticity. Sad that not more people have tuned in to listen. He has verbalized lots of sentiment that I have felt but unable to put into words. Although these are controversial positions, more with the older generation, I believe it resonates with many in our generation (40s/50s) who has straddled the generational and cultural gaps.

Cuộc trò chuyện xuất sắc trong việc cung cấp nền tảng để thảo luận có ý nghĩa, khám phá các quan điểm đa dạng và làm sáng tỏ sự phức tạp của bản sắc Việt Nam
The conversation excels in providing a platform for meaningful discussion, exploring diverse perspectives, and shedding light on the complexities of Vietnamese identity

As Vietnamese children, just like Kenneth said, are very difficult to express ourselves to tell parents that we love them. Especially in Vietnamese language. But VTN did his best to say that to his parents. Kudos to him. I think we should learn from that and tell our parents that we love them! Do it before it is too late Kenneth! I am proud of my siblings, we said often before them passing.
Thanks for beautiful conversations with VTN. Love the show. Learned lots.

Thank you for the kind words, Hang. You are so blessed to be able to have said the I love you’s to your folks before their passing. I’m definitely attempting to pull it off before I lose my chance!! VTN is pretty badass the way he kept at it with his family.

If you speak the language on the regular then simply you are Vietnamese. So to those whose struggling with their identity, learned the language and put it in practice at least once a week. If you have no Vietnamese around to talk to, there's a Buddish temple or Vietnamese churches to get a good practice in. Also, try to go to VN and get a local to show you around.

Another awesome interview! I saw some of his books in the bookstores here in London and I was definitely thinking about buying "The Sympathizer". I am not a fan of fiction books, but The Sympathizer is another one that made it to my list of books to read!
It was also definitely interesting to hear his take on Vietnamese identity and nationalism. He seems to have done quite well giving his two cents here and there in spite of how controversial and sensitive those topics are!

Once you get past the first few chapters, the book flies fast. It’s a hard task balancing all these viewpoints. Viet Thanh Nguyen is a master at getting right to the point from a few different angles.

Really enjoyed this podcast with Viet Thanh Nguyen.
With the talks about parents in this podcast recommending a song by ICD - Tài Sản Của Bố. Hopefully listening to it motivates you Kenneth to say to your mom what you want because the song touches on the limited time we have with our parents. When I hear this song I pretty much drop what I am doing and either call my dad or send him a text.

@@TheVietnamesepodcast - Given the book "The Sympathizer" and its theme of spying, I was hoping you would touch upon the subject of Pham Xuan An, a man who was really a spy for North Vietnam while working for Time magazine during the war.

You two should go and live in VN with the VN communists for a while and learn their communism way. And don’t come back before you really understand them then you will really understand why people mourn Black April. You two are too naive , just talk and talk , action now , go to live in VN!
