I've been on the fence about leaving social for some time now. As a 37 year old illustrator, it felt like I could be dumping a life line. However, lately social media has been making me incredibly unhappy, and with the advent of ai art on everyone's feed, I knew it was time to rethink my relationship with the internet, Been watching your content for a while now, but I really appreciate your work , and give people like me a potential path beyond the social media grind that initially seemed to be the only option. Cheers from Seattle! And a big thanks for giving people like me an alternative perspective to share our work.
I feel like instagram he same way of be soul destroying for artists.i commented on her other video that artists on instagram are drowning or getting drowned out by everyone's post/ reel the same Looking the same. The same audio with the same unengaging ways of posting. I think we need to think of ways of sharing that's engaging and Stands out from others.
Hi! @enochvaughn I’ve been having similar thoughts. I’ve decided to officially let go of social media. As a musician promoting my music it almost feels counterintuitive to my goals. But I’m realizing that anything is possible. Just think about how artists and musicians promoted their art before social media even existed. Social media has clouded my focus and it truly is over saturated with the same type of content. I’m going old school and promoting my material the old fashioned way! Good luck to you with your artistic success!😊
@@lattipatterson Hey! Its hard to believe it has been almost a year since I left social media, but for me; it was the absolute best choice for my creativity, as well as my well being. I left feeling very defeated with the algorithm and aggressive advent of AI art plaguing the gaming industry of which I was pursuing a career in. However, now I feel I have found a deeper connection with my work and am far less stressed with the pressures of what the rest of the world is up to. I am very privileged that i currently live in a bigger city with a varied creative community (Seattle) that allows me to focus on networking and " word of mouth" to share my work. I wish you the best of luck on your journey! If Ive learned anything in the past year it is that life is happening around you constantly, and the best gift you can give yourself is to remove the distractions that prevent you from experiencing every bit of it. Have fun, and good luck!

I love the black heart emoji too! One of my favourites. This video has been so incredibly helpful and so has the rest of your channel, it's inspiring me to just start things instead of being afraid, so thank you for the wonderful videos you create!!
This is the first video ive watched of yours. Thank you so much. I felt this was a really thorough and insightful video. Ive subscribed to your channel and will be watching all your videos right now. LOVE the calm approach, so needed in this overwhelming digital world
Thanks Louise, I intentionally try to find less 'mainstream' channels. Its a refreshing change 😊 This is a brand new channel im about to kick off soon, so this was a preferct reminder to set up a mailing list now also. Im not likely to actually sell product, but rather use it to offer additional value add (free) for viewers AND to keep control over subs so im not relying on social media to alert peolle when something new is released...the mailingblist can do that 👍
I really don't like giving over my email or joining subscriber email lists, I've probably only willingly and cheerfully done this a few times in my life, but im going to head over to your website and subscribe, because this video was SO helpful and your vibe is so calming and you have a genuine, giving way about you. Im new to making my art website and figuring out how to do online marketing, and this video was just what I needed. thank you so much for this and I look forward to more of your posts and content :)
Thank you for such a clear and calm video tutorial! I looked at a couple of other tutorials on TH-cam, but they were a little too quick and loud for my taste 😄 They also weren't geared specifically for artists and crafters. I feel confident that I can set up an email list now 🙂
Thank you for the disclaimer! I always feel so pressured by all the advice from other artists. Since email marketing doesn’t resonate with me (yet), I really appreciated it. ❤️ Instant like from me.
I am just finishing University (studying painting) and I want to have a mailing list ready for the degree show, this has been such a great help, thank you
Thanks, great to see something aimed at Artists wanting to promote themselves and their art rather than fast moving online businesses. I love that you talk about the problems on MailChimp as well as the plus side. Off to check out how to do this in practice.
What a great approach to a thumbnail with color coding. It is a comment for the sake of comment, gonna enjoy watching the video first thing in the morning
Thankyou Louise for this very clear and informative tutorial. So much useful and practical information covering all the basic points, but not in an overwhelming way for anyone like me who is just getting started in this area. Glad you appeared in my recommended!💙
Thank you for this well-put-together video. The information was extremely useful, plus the music was really soothing. It really made for a nice informative, relaxing experience.
Thank you so much for this very useful post ! I'm french and I will have to look at it because I think it's the next step for me (hope it will have a way to have french language, or I will just try like that). Merci ☺️🙏
This was something I was thinking of doing. Thanks for tips and demo Louise! Now, I have questions for you: One, are blogs still effective to draw an audience for your art? Two: What if you don't want to do all the shipping and packaging of your art products (zines and artbooks, as an example), what can you do? Three: Would you know what art based job that is involved with making resources for people?
Thank you! 🙏🏻 Are blogs still effective? It depends, of course. But in general, I would say "not so much anymore". Because there's no built-in way to get seen and discovered and because there are soooo many blogs/websites out threre and increasingly difficult to rank in search. Writing, or creating text based content, is definitely not dead. But one might need to find ways to adapt or complement that with other activities in order to build an audience from scratch. I don't like packaging and shipping either, which is why I don't focus on selling stuff that needs to be packaged and shipped. =D Instead, I create content around my art, such as videos, courses, digital products. There's also the option of selling prints and illustrations via sites like Society6 and RedBubble. As for art-based jobs, it depends on what type of job, and what type of art you want. There's always illustration and graphic design. Or working as an animator or 3D-modeler or artist for a game company. Not sure what you mean by "making resources for people", but I guess those qualify. 😜
@@LouiseStigell I mean making resources for other people to use like downloadable content like worksheets or e-books? What job would that be like? Or what would it be called?
@@ViktoriaAntalart Hello. Well no. I'm thinking more of making resources to use in therapy mostly speech therapy because I'm studying speech language hearing sciences and fine arts to combine the two to make resources for speech therapists to use. I do apologize if that's not your expertise.

Has anyone in this comment session (or you Louise!!) found an email mkt service that isn't dependent on showing your address? I understand that it is being done for spam reasons, but I'm really put off by this, nor I'd like to subscribe to a PO box just so I can send newsletters. I'm considering using my Patreon as a newsletter of sorts, but it isn't ideal as I'd have to ask people to have accounts and follow me there. It limits the audience from the start. Anyway, thank you for sharing this content! I met your channel through this + the marketing (without Instagram) vid and the advice is great. Cheers ✨
I completely understand, I ultimately had to go with getting a PO Box because I just didn't see any other way around the laws surrounding it. If you happen to know anyone with a business that would allow you to use their address that might work?

Hi !! Thanks for this video ! I have a question. Is it possible to automatize for free a welcome email in mailchimp ? I tried and IT seems not possible but maybe I'm doing something wrong. Thanks !
Thanks for this. My question is: once you have it all set up, when did you start sending out emails. Did you wait until you had a certain number of subscribers?
Good question. 😊 I didn't really take my own advice here. I procrastinated until I had around 50 subs before I sent the first letter. It was a combination of being really busy with other things, and actually having some stage fright after not running an email list for several years. I guess there's no harm in gathering up a small crowd before you start sending, but it's also good to keep in mind that the longer you wait, the higher the likelihood that those early subscribers are going to forget who you are and get confused/irritated when you start sending. 😅
I know, I've had the dilemma before too. But I don't think it necessarily has to be this exclusive thing either. It could also just be a place where you gather everything in one place for people, and maybe (if you sell products) offer early invites or discounts. A lot of people double post to their blog and the newsletter for example, or send shownotes for their podcast to their email list. It can be as easy as that.
When people visit your website, you can have a tool for visitors to fill in their email address to subscribe to emails from you. If you've ever seen "subscribe to my newsletter" on a website, that's what that is. Pretty much all the website building platforms today include tools for integrating mailing lists into your website. So you don't so much collect people's emails yourself, you put a tool on your website for people to enter their email at their own leisure. Once they enter, they're automatically on your list for whenever you send out an email/newsletter through the service you're using. Hope that helps.
Also just so people know. A PO Boxes can't be used on business documents as the business address. It's actually illegal. You have to use another service for the virtual business address that CAN be used on documents. Then, keep the PO box to receive packages and mail to the business. It's just another money hoop we are made to jump through.

Hmmm I'm also put off by the home address thing lol....why do they insist on that when you get freaky stalkers on the internet lol?
