Join us in the dove field one last time until the opener! We bush hog corn, sunflowers and burn more of the millet field. I think you are REALLY going to enjoy this one. One final look at what our dove field looks like one week before the opener! "Like" and "Subscribe", it's free and lets me know you are enjoying the content!
If anyone has a large enough plot of land and has a pine stand on their property, they can do some prescribed burning in the months before. Dove will come and roost in the pine stands so you can hunt the fields during the day and move to the stands in the mornings and evenings. Great video!
Been great watching this process. Im in VA. Our sunflowers ended up hit and miss. Rain amounts seemed to be some of the issue we had. Seasons almost here. Hope your boy is able to get one too. My daughter got her first dove two years ago at 11 and first ducks last year. Awesome moment as a dad. Keep up the hard work brother
Looks great. Wish I had a little corn planted. I mowed about 1 acre of my sunflowers down. Jumped about 30 doves out. Dove season opens Sunday in Missouri. I will probably cut another acre down Friday so we can find birds. Looking forward to seeing how my Brittany does opening morning. Good luck and be careful.
@@andersoncreekhomestead6378 I wish. I had to broadcast seed this year because it was too wet in my fields and couldn't wait any longer. Planted on May 11th. That is the method I use though. I will leave about 15-foot-wide strips in the field. After I mow a strip, I try to come back the next week and widen it 15 feet. Killed 60 opening morning last year.
I think leaving standing crop is the way to go. The doves will use it as cover and it also gives you the ability to set up wherever you want and not be in the open. Plus you have the option of walking the field and flushing them out.
Good luck Monday! Our neighbor always puts on a good hunt and I get some birds at my place mainly of an evening. Not quite as many birds this week but hopefully the ones that vamoosed last week during the 50 degree nights will be replaced during this hot weather before Monday. I'll be smoking rib racks Sun afternoon to help feed the boys (& girls) during the lunch break Monday. We also have to expose our newest dog (English Setter pup) to the joys of hunting.
Looks like you are about ready. I was going to head out today, but I'm waiting until tomorrow to do my final prep which will be about 10 days before our opening. The burn went great removing a lot of detritus and exposing toasted seeds all over the ground. There are some areas where the Pusley was thick and still green that didn't burn so I'll mow strips in this to open it up while still leaving cover for the birds. I'll also hit the majority of the sunflowers while on the tractor. I'm leaving my brown top millet standing as it isn't browned out yet. We'll just have to mark the area well if a bird drops in it. Good luck with your shoot on opening day.
@@Yellowlab247_Outdoors Finished up yesterday (8.29) which is also 9 days prior to our opening of the 7th. The amount of millet I have on the ground is crazy.
I wonder if you adjust your tailwheel height on your bush hog so that you can run it higher in the front when you’re mowing corn and sunflowers so it mulches up the stalks better. It looked like you had the deck parallel to the ground. Changing the angle up or down from front to back can give different results.
In Ga, it has to be normal agricultural process field to be legal to hunt. I think what you are doing is considered normal agricultural process. You just can put any kind of bait out on the ground. You have to grow it, and you can bushhog it.
Never used a chipper, some folks have recommended that. The corn busts up pretty good and I have also noticed the critters (rabbits, mice, skunks, coons and deer) all leave a mess of corn on the ground. Only my second year doing corn
How long does it usually take for the doves to discover a freshly manipulated field? Assuming the manipulation is the sole reason and the first time seeds are hitting the ground.
@@Johnsplots they seem to find it pretty quick, but we have resident birds around all spring and summer it seems. And we have millet on the ground, starting as early as August 1 then sunflower soon to follow so there’s been seed out there a month
Ha! We will leave some for the others! You havnt seen my crowd shoot lol Not near as much corn around us this year and what is there is pitiful. Not sure how that may effect us

Sounds like a great day planned!
Looking good. We're holding a great amount of birds this year cool front seemed to help push some in.
Where are you located. Jumped about 30 out of my field Saturday in Missouri.
@@keithkinsey5593 central NC
Seem to be decent numbers around. Scattered birds on powerlines
We're holding roughly 200-300. With the drought no ag crops made around me corn is all stocks. So I'm holding all the cards with my field.

Turned out pretty good after all. Hope yall have a good season.
Thanks! Same to you sir
The field looks great!
Thank you! Lot of hard work as you know but its worth it

Tail wheel is actually broke and needs some work but I may play around with the adjustment!

Great job👍👍
wow amazing i am looking for the first time
Do you find they'll still eat the corn after the bush hog or are the pieces still to big? Have you ever used a chipper for corn.

Nice
We got somewhat similar to the same set up Here in central piedmontNC.. Look great !!
Great to hear! We are in Chatham Co. Glad to know there are more folks like us working hard to improve habitat

@Yellowlab247_NC_Outdoors thank you sir.
Hope you limit as many days as you hunt.
Thanks dude, me too! Opener usually produces limits for those that shoot decent. We shall see
If you don’t mind me asking what part of N.C. are you from
Central NC, near Pittsboro
Why do you drive with your loader in the air? Don't get it
Only do that on the edges because the loader catches the poles
👍
Y'all gone have so many birds the rest of NC won't have any.
