I wish they'd explain the history of Mel & why she doesn't escape from Nathan. They eluded to the fact that she has also been abused & he threatens if Bethany goes, she will suffer. Why would that not be her cue to escape as she clearly has no loyalty to Bethany.

I think he implied at one stage she left years ago and her family are no longer looking for her/don't want to know. She is isolated and has no other option. He will reinforce that with her and threaten her into the bargain.. it's quite sad really. I'm sure we will find out more in time....

Exactly, on one hand Nathan is clearly abusive toward her, but on the other he provides her with some security - a job, a roof I'd imagine. All the best abusers know that being the problem(abuse) and the solution(security, occasional kindness) is the way to ensnare people.

Abuse victims don't often recognize that they're being abused because they've been groomed. Nathan has groomed Bethany and Mel into believing that his behaviour is normal. That's why neither of them see it.
