Thank you for sharing sharing your experience in videos like this. And thank you for sacrificing your wheel by touching it 😮 Never heard what happens and I‘m glad I have never done it to mine 😊
Thank you Michalina. I got to know that something like this exists when I began listening to Eluveitie more than a decade ago. You then took over the reigns from Anna right. Few years back stumbled upon Storm Seeker who had Patty Gurdy there. So yeah guess the sound of the Hurdy Gurdy is something that resonates... Happy that you are cranking on with your new band \m/
I've seen this instrument in some of the balkan folk metal bands on youtube and I was very intrigued by it, very impressive stuff. Much love from İstanbul
I've been eyeing your Aplo ever since you released the first try-out version, but I haven't been able to take the leap yet. One day... It makes me super happy to see how your store has grown in the past years!
I don't doubt that! I've been obsessing over hurdy gurdies for almost a decade now. spent a lot of time talking about this instrument during my guitar lessons and having super vivid dreams for the same amount of time. I've had the opportunity to try the instrument at festivals a few times and it just fills me with warmth. I know it'll be worth it!@@michalina_malisz
I knew very little about the instrument, so this was a nice little crash course on the basics, thank you. Personally I’d love to hear jazz (Coltrane, Evans, Montgomery, etc) being played on it, if that’s even possible.
The Aplo 😊, mine is 3 years old now and makes me happy every time I play it. Cool video for newbies, or anyone interested in knowing what is that weird instrument we play 😂
That was really cool. As much as I love the Hurdy gurdys, the workings of it have always kind of been a mystery. Now I understand it a lot better. Thanks!
amazing video! I'm currently assembling a nerdy and people keep asking me abut it, this is the best explanation anyone could ever give :) maybe once I'll have saved up enough for a Saphona, they're gorgeous
Really great explanation. Now I understand how it works. Looking at how its played I think I would be wanting to turn with my left hand and key with my right which is strange because I play guitar right handed.
I was inspired by Eluveitie back in 2011 :D I ordered my first instrument in 2013 and yes, they were much less accessible back then! It's been just 10 years but the change to the hurdy-gurdy market is crazy. There are so many more beginner and mid-range options available now. It's a good time to start learning the hurdy-gurdy! 😄
@@michalina_malisz That's great to hear! I thought that Eluveitie were indeed the reason, but I just wanted to make sure. Definitely glad to know that things have picked up in recent years.
To maintain the hurdy-gurdy you need just a few things, that you usually get in your gurdy toolkit anyways :) A screwdriver for tuning, cotton (brushed from Amazon or some people use tampon cotton, me included) and either regular solid rosin that you can get in a music store or liquid rosin that you can make at home (crushed solid rosin dissolved in a strong alcohol). Or do you mean something else? 🤗
@@michalina_malisz Hi! No no this is what I mean. What about strings? Are these readily available? The thing is I am not a person with any pre-existing instrumental skills and this is the only instrument I have ever seen that makes me want to change that, so I guess it's a complicated starting point. I love the sound so much though.
@@chillow88 there aren't really hurdy gurdy strings. Most commonly used are viola and cello, it is possible to use classical guitar strings as well. You don't have to worry about not being a player, a lot of people started with the gurdy first and were successful. Teachers do zoom classes so you can study anywhere :)
Nothing personal to you, but after listening to numerous hurdy gurdy videos, I have come to the conclusion that it's a horrible sounding instrument. I'm sorry. I'm truly sorry.
Their initial purpose is to vibrate together with the other stings because of resonance and creating reverb effect. However, there is no rule that says that you can't pluck them like a guitar string if you want to 😄
I hope you find this video helpful! If you have any questions - leave them in the comments below! 🤗
WHAT IS A HURDY GURDY ?!
On a more serious note, thank you for spreading that hurdy gurdy information to the world ❤
Oh man, now I have to film this video again! 😂 Thank you for watching and commenting, much appreciated! ❤

You're very welcome! 🤗 The wheel touch was for science! 🚀

Got my Aplo last month and I'm absolutely loving it! This is a delightful instrument to learn.

Could you do a video how to change the strings on the hurdy gurdy properly? I kinda struggle with it lol
Wow I learned something new today! Hurdy gurdy is very Interesting and cool piece of musical instrument! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the very detailed video, the instrument is amazing and your explanations are on point
Thank you very much, I appreciate your comment! :)
I'm definitely interested in what inspired you to learn the hurdy-gurdy and if they were less accessible to buy at the time you got into them.

it is a work of art
Thankyou. I'd been wondering how the keys changed the notes.
I wish I could afford one of these, they're amazing! Wonder if I could make a crude version with scraps in my basement
Is it possible to add vibrato by wiggling your fingers on the keys? What about portamento? It would be really nice to have these!
I really want to get one but I feel like in thr UK it would be hard to get the things required to maintain it.

how are the strings engaged to the wheel?
All the gurdy players watching just cringed for your wheel XD
I did it for science. 😂
Can you please play 'hurdy gurdy man' :)
Who else watched Captains Corageous?
hey, what do you call this instrument?
Lira korbowa
Nice! I'll call it hurdy gurdy!
???
HURDY. GURDY.

👏🏻👏🏻🫶🏻 Thank you very much for explaining it’s been a few years since I’ve known the instrument but I’ve never seen how it works 🇧🇷
Do you ever touch the resonant strings for an effect or is it left as is?
Their initial purpose is to vibrate together with the other stings because of resonance and creating reverb effect. However, there is no rule that says that you can't pluck them like a guitar string if you want to 😄
They are spaced really close together so they can be hard to pluck individually, but I sometimes give mine a strum for effect
