One of their greatest songs ever. Amazing TGPT was able to play along to the strings in headphones in 1974 and remain in time! Not sure how he did this. Maybe there was a click track in his headphones as well ? Incredible performance and wonderful to see John Wetton as well on bass...easily the best bass player they ever had. Does anyone have The Thrill of It All ?...the 3rd track performed on this Midnight Special show.
I would assume there was a click track, as was typically the case with these sorts of things. I honestly don't know for certain, though. I have the whole 'Midnight Special' appearance somewhere within my digital hoard, but here's an upload, from another user, of "The Thrill of it All" in rather shoddy quality (which you may have found by now): th-cam.com/video/kucQWz2EsvI/w-d-xo.html If you're a Wetton fan, he sings quite a lot on this version (I love his stuff with Crimson, but otherwise think UK, Asia, etc., were garbage).
@@MattQuigley I too had a crappy VHS of all three songs, so nice to see them again, even if not in pristine quality. Wetton was great in Family, especially Crimson, Roxy and Ferry solo. I liked UK's first album with Bruford quite a bit although it doesn't age as well. Asia definitely not my thing, but it earn him a living and cannot blame anyone for that. Shame him and Fripp never reunited in a meaningful way in Crimson. Almost however in the late 90s with Mike Giles and Ian McDonald!
I have Mtron Pro by G-Force, a Mellotron emulator, and it has a setting for "Roxy Music" and the string segments are cut up into sections to be played in sequence. However, on the video, Jobson is clearly not playing the Mellotron, so, I have no idea how this happened, other than the whole thing was lip synced, which I find unplausible.
@@NovalarkeThis performance is an amazing feat for 1974. They created a mix that contained just the string section and probably a click track for drummer Paul Thompson to follow. Everything else is played live. Jobson is playing the piano part live instead. I don’t hear a mellotron on the studio recording anyway. It’s a real string section probably played by Jobson in multiple overdubs.
@@microbunny - it's a customised tape set, made specifically for the recording rehearsals IIRC. They recorded a string quartet, and then cut the tape up into 8 second (or so) sections that were then installed for each key. So, to play the song, you just go up the scale one key at a time, and the entire thing gets played out. I can understand why they did that - it's easier for rehearsals. Rehearsing with the string quartet would... get expensive. A lot. And if you rehearse to the tape, if someone flubs you don't have to rewind the whole damn tape.
