    I rode Orion yesterday. I was in the third row. The first drop was crazy high. Love the wave turn. This ride lifted me out of the seat on the speed hill. Overall Orion exceeded my expectations

    That’s what my reaction first was in the back rows. Lol. I am giving it more rides before giving it a review, but I agree on what you said. It’s just a park with a history of great coasters, you just wish that they would of did more with this coaster!

    The more I ride Orion, the more I love it. I think I have a tendency to over-hype things in my own head. I build all this anticipation and set myself up to be let down. I agree that the ride feels short. I always say I want one more airtime hill in there somewhere.

      The more I rode Orion the more I liked it, and for most rides that tends to be the opposite for me. I agree, one more camel back or speed hill would do this ride wonders.

    I rode Orion in the second to the last row my first time. That ejector airtime on the first drop was the best I’ve ever experienced (haven’t been on Leviathan, Fury, or any RMC). It’s still a solid airtime ride and gave me more than I expected. Second ride I was right in the middle. The closer to the front you are the more intense it is for sure. I NEVER greyed out in my life until the bottom of the hill. When they first announced it I thought it’d be boring after the first drop. I was dead wrong. It’s a great addition even if it doesn’t compare to the first 2 B&M Gigas

  • @CoasterJawn
    @CoasterJawn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Orion blew me away, it was also my first b&m giga, but I think it’s best in the park, and clearly cedar fair couldn’t quite afford to outdo fury bc Orion still put them out $30 million. Orion doesn’t have the crazy amount of insane elements like some other world class coasters, but the speed, intensity, and overall experience really does it for me. It’s my favorite B&M.

    • @mr.intamin1081

      Doesn’t outdo leviathan either especially since Levi added 700 pounds of weight to the trains making it the fastest giga

    Good hearing your thoughts! I thought the length was perfectly fine being 50 seconds drop to brake. Of course an element or two more could've been great, we'll always want more though I feel. I wish I could've gotten more than one ride. I went opening day and waited four hours. I was assigned front row and it exceeded my expectations. I've been on the four US gigas and I have Orion ranked just barely above Millennium Force and below Fury and Intimidator 305. There was one thing you said that really surprised me though. You said the camelback after the speed hill was "airtime-less", but on my front seat ride I got a really strong and very sustained pop of flojector over the crest and all the way down that drop, even with those trims.

    Phantoms Revenge at Kennywood is a hyper even though it has a 160ft tall lift hill. It’s second drop is 228ft. Making this coaster a hyper. Orion is a giga even though it has a 287ft tall lift hill. It’s drop is 300 ft. Making this coaster a giga. Orion is a giga confirmed!

    When I rode Orion, I did get some rides both day and night and I thought that wave turn was intense! But I did have a good time at Kings Island and was not disappointed with this roller coaster as well as the beast, Diamondback, Mystic Timbers and Banshee!

    Yeah you can tell that their ops really have cycle numbers in mind and I appreciate that.
    Also great review, it’s good to focus on what rides are attempting to accomplish than what they aren’t. I will say, though, they trimmed hill gave me some sustained airtime. I was off my seat the whole time surprisingly.

    I think that Kings Island has a winner~ Yes Kings Island and B&M didn't build the greatest and best traditional giga coaster, but it's not supposed to be. It's supposed to be a nice and fun ride that everyone will enjoy, and the general public seem to really enjoy this ride a lot. I think Orion seems like a great giga coaster, as Leviathan is my home giga coaster, and I love that ride a lot, but I think I would like Orion just as much as Leviathan. Plus, Cedar Fair paid $30 million for Orion and Area 72, so of course the layout isn't going to be long, but it's not meant to be. It's supposed to be a people eater and no one will even care that it's pretty short. Plus capacity is what it achieves well. It's the same case with Leviathan. The rides are shortened for cost cutting purposes, but it will still draw in huge crowds because of one thing: it's a giga coaster, that's all that matters for Cedar Fair to market the ride, just like all their other giga coasters. And the "mid-course block" and the rolling station block on Orion definitely helps with capacity. Plus, Cedar Fair invented the concept of a giga coaster anyways, so they can definitely call Orion a giga coaster if it has a 300 foot drop even if it's only 287 feet tall, just like how Apollo's Chariot can be called a hyper coaster, since it has a 210 foot drop even if it's 170 feet tall. Overall, roller coasters are meant to be really good rides, but at the same time, they're built with practicality in mind for easy maintenance and high throughput, and Orion achieves that flawlessly, along with pretty much any B&M coaster. Cedar Fair is smart with their investments to build high quality roller coasters, and we can't doubt them for that.

    I finally got around to riding this monster and I have to say I really didn't know what to expect. But other than the noticeable rattle and slight trim on the camelback I thought this thing was awesome. It just seemed to absolutely haul through every element that constantly changed and surprised you. I couldn't believe how much I grayed out on that helix either haha. This things just feels like an elite ride. Start to finish. And at no point did it really feel short.

  • @spacevspitch4028

    I've ridden it 4 times now. Never rode a giga before so for a newbie I'm sure it's a different experience, not having anything to compare it to. I only have 2 real "complaints". It's not long enough and the trim on that 5th hill right after the low speed hill is kinda depressing. I'm not sure what the reasons for it are. Better be some super important safety measure cuz you could get some nice Diamondback-like air on that one if it wasn't for that. If you're in the back you get some I guess. Oh well.
    But otherwise, I feel like for what it is, all of the elements are really well balanced and I think I'll definitely enjoy riding it again and again for quite some time.

  • @urbex_coasters
    @urbex_coasters 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Orion is the 6th giga. Red Force is not a giga, when Intamin invented the term they said it has to have a lift hill. As for my thoughts on Orion I think it's the second best coaster in Ohio, only behind Steel Vengence. I was getting crazy airtime on it when I rode it. The only changes I'd make to Orion are taking a note from Leviathan and putting a tunnel on the drop, as that's one of the best near misses out there and it would fit in anazingly with the space theme, as well as removing the trim from the big airtime hill later in the ride. If it's necessary for the helix because of the forces found on testing being that it wasn't in the animation I'd put it right before the helix. The only giga in North America I haven't ridden yet is Fury, which I will get to when Cedar Fair makes Carowinds a year round park within a few years being how easy it is to get there from the airport (I saw it from my plane when I connected in Charlotte when I went to Bush Gardens Tampa last December) and the fact that I have a lot of free time in December. Millenium is by far the weakest of the gigas I've ridden and to that I say "I should hope so" being that the others had at least 10 years to improve on it, which they all have.

    This is gonna be a longer comment so buckle up everybody. First of all, I'd like to say that I love your channel. So, I would like to say that I love Orion. Before I went to Kings Island, I watched and read all the available reviews, and it seemed like an overwhelming number of people were underwhelmed by it. I went to Kings Island and I was just in shock of how HUGE the ride looks and how stunning it is. When I was walking through the queue, hearing the musical score, watching the ride, and seeing all the themeing elements, I knew that I was going to love the ride. Getting on the ride, I had already set my standards pretty high, and the ride exceeded every one of them. I went in, expecting the ride to be short, but I also went in expecting everything that the ride DID have to be great. I was blown away by how great the ride was. I bought a Fastlane so I could skip the line, and I rode it twenty times. It is now my favorite ride in the park and it is within my top five favorite roller coasters, and every time I hear somebody complain about it, it goes up another spot.
    I think one of the reasons why I love it so much is just because it seems like a ride that was BUILT for the fans of Kings Island, more specifically locals who have been going to the park for generations. With all the Easter Eggs in the queue line, I feel like the ride is meant for the people who have gone to the park in the past and know the rides that were once at the park. It just makes me realize just how much that park is loved by the people of Cincinnati; I have a number of classmates at my college here in Springfield, Missouri who are from Cincinnati and I briefly mention that I've gone to Kings Island and they launch into stories on how they love Kings Island and that they go every summer with their families. The ride feels like a tribute to the past as it launches the park into the future.
    With all the themeing and all the details around the ride, it's obvious that the park takes a whole lot of pride in Orion; the almost feels like a crowning achievement for the park since they've been rumored to get one for YEARS, and now they finally have it. They made it. The ride just feels like something special. Sorry about the long comment. I just feel like so many people in the coaster community have been so hard on the ride. I really wish I lived closer to Cincinnati.

      The theming s really the only thing that I can say anything good about when it comes to Orion. You need to understand that I consider the ride's potiental and what other options the park had to build instead when it comes to rating rides, and Orion is a complete failure with these aspects.
      1. The layout isnt very inspired and feels phoned in, the only remotely unique thing that the ride does is the wave turn.
      2. It completely squanders the amazing land they had to work with basically ignoring the terrain and building it tall outside of the main drop, it's not as bad as Verbolten (which is a glorified box coaster with a tacked on terrain ending from the previous coaster that used that land), but it's still quite terrible and downright inexcusable from the park that also houses Beast.
      3. King's Island never needed a giga to begin with, Millennium Force is too close and in the same state, now unless it was a Vekoma giga (which given their recent track record I wouldn't put past them to do), which is just too tempting to pass up then I stand by that. There were other better options that the park could have gone wiith:
      a. A B&M flyer (I mean the Ohio coaster market lacks one after Firehawk was removed), they could have gone for all the records and made great use of the terrain (think Tatsu, Air and Sky Scrapper merged into one ride).
      b. Other options include a major multi-launch (preferably by Vekoma, even if Mack is the more likely choice) as they're common enough and King's Island does lack a standout launch coaster.
      c. a modern multi-looper would have worked even before Vortex was removed (plus it would have softened the blow a bit), plus I would have killed for something like Lech Coaster.

  • @elijahrock3914

    how i wish it had just one more element. it feels like its meant to be the big amazing standout of this park, but then it feels almost defined by being short, especially when diamondback is right there. i know we are meant to look at what its meant to do and not expect fury or anything, but it just feels so sad that this is the big Massive ultimate coaster and it just falls short of being big and ultimate.

    • @elijahrock3914
      @elijahrock3914 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don’t understand why people keep trying to convince others that this ride is not just “ ok” the same way women try to explain away their good husband with a small package ! If it’s little, it’s little! It’s like everyone starts with all This pontification : “ you have to get super granular and focus on what the ride was meant to do” garbage. At best it’s the third best ride in the park. I’d rank it 4th behind Mystic, Diamondback , and Banshee. This ride is like an affordable 3 series BMW for someone that wants the BMW but can’t afford a 5 series or higher. B&M probably needed another 10mm to turn this into a great ride and honestly , like people i know that got the 2 or 3 series BMW, that wish they paid for a better car, i bet Kings Island wishes they did as well. It feels incomplete. It’s an underwhelming giga but just an ok fun ride that is NOTHING special.
    Also, rides that focus on speed achieve that by having low to the ground elements. That, at 52 seconds would
    Have been awesome and i know damn well B&M can do it, it just goes agains their parabolic air hill philosophy. I rode in the front and back and what you see is what you get. It’s just not special.

    I never thought it would be bad, I just said it was too similar to Diamonback. They could have gotten another company to build this coaster to give it a different feel. Vekoma or Intamin could have done it much better than B&M at the same height.

    • @AceAviations2
      @AceAviations2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cedar Fair will never work with Intamin again after Shoot the Rapids and I305, plus Intamin kind of burned them with the inflated RPH that Millennium Forcel Dragster and Maverick before that (ElToroRyan's problematic coasters series mentions this, the actual throughput is lower than they advertised), Vekoma on the other hand could have done something incredible given how amazing their recent stuff looks. As much as I feel that King's Island never needed a giga and that people were delusional to think that they needed one with Millennium Force in the same state, a Vekoma giga is just too tempting to pass up with their recent track record of kickass rides, plus if it featured inversion (think a cross between Lech Coaster and their rejected hyper concept for Energylandia scaled up to Prion's heights). I would change my tune as it would be distinctly different from Millennium Force with that. Not only that but they could have taken the tallest inversion record with something like say a 200+ foot tall immelman turnaround, that and they cold have possibly done more with it as it likely would have been cheaper (like $25-mill) making the layout not so uninspired and phoned in.
      But for the land that it uses its absolute trash, you had great terrain to work with yet built it tall, its almost as bad a building a glorified box coaster on great terrain while tacking on the terrain ending from the previous coaster (yes I'm calling out Verbolten). The waste of potiental on top of the park not really needing a giga (could have built an amazing B&M flyer there instead), the uninspired layout (which IMO is deserved), the disregard for the amazing land outside of the main drop and the fact that they could have built something that benefitted the Ohio coaster market as a whole make it for me one of the worst coasters ever built for how pointless it was, only Candymonium is worse in this regard (or as I call it 'I have no reason to exisist: the Ride').
      What they could have done compared to what they actually did is bad enough that it automatically drops Orion into shit tier with the likes of Twisted Cyclone (Auto-Complete: the Ride) and Verbolten, rides that had great potential but the park fucked it up so badly that they're bad rides.

    • @bigblueamusementproductions
      @bigblueamusementproductions 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AceAviations2 You have to understand that Orion was never meant to just please the coaster enthusiasts which make up less than 1% of the park's attendance. The ride was meant to be a people eater and be a GP magnet and it does just that. Same thing with Candymonium which actually does this more since their other existing hyper Skyrush, the GP tend to find the ride too intense so they decided to build a ride that would be graceful and have high capacity.
