- Although The Sickness has gone by many names, such as Imperial Weapons Project I71A and Project Blackwing, it is by far one of the most terrifying forces that exists within the Star Wars universe, and thankfully still remains in Legends, not canon. This video is still a “fun” examination of the virus' origins, history, transmission, and potential treatments, showcasing just about everything you need to know about it, and the undead zombie abominations it creates!

Out of all creepy things Star Wars Legends has, it's definitely the Black Wing Virus that takes the cake. It gives me shivers each time I think about it.
Rakghouls are also no joke. Trying to find the time to make that video next!

Blackwing needed to stay gone. Not because it was bad creatively. Quite the opposite in fact. But because of the horrors that come with it.
It isn't just a reanimating virus. It's literally alive and sentient, and wants to consume and control all living matter.
I loved the audiobooks death troopers and red harvest, and I tell you with the music and zombie screaming and moaning sound effects' damn it was one hell of a walk to the truck in the night mist after work😂
Just finished listening to them. My impressions of them: holy fucking christ!!!! As if death troopers wasn't horrifying enough, red harvest just made it borderline hopeless!!!

I think Death Troopers was actually a really good book personally so was Red Harvest and it put it's own unique take on zombies. Also Project Blackwing itself is actually part of the Disney canon the audio book for Death Troopers is also legitimately terrifying they did a great job with the sounds, music and everything in the books.
One thing I really thought was frightening was that in the lamba shuttle that had 30 people in it there was a zombie in the there the entire time hiding watching them, waiting the entire 10 weeks they were in there for the perfect moment to strike when they were at their weakest. Showing that they are incredibly patient hunters.
Also I'd say that Rakghoul virus is also up there with the blackwing virus it was just as infectious and just as deadly the mandalorians of all people were so afraid of it being spread that they carpet bombed the entire surface of a planet with nukes just to make sure nothing could escape. The rakghoul plague also originated from sith alchemy.
You know the what i think about the zombie on the shuttle. It wasn't waiting for the right moument to strike, it was watching for fun. Because it knew they couldn't leave so one way or another they would join the horde. So why rush the enviable when it had live entertamint while waiting for its next meal to be railed in.
Another thing I think people didn't realise could have happened. If the engines didn't break on the purged they would have escaped. Think about it. All the other ships are too small to hold the numble of infected needed to stay alive for them to spread while the purged could was ment to hold around a 1000 people that could be raised to a few thosand with how little space the infected need. If it worked they would have left then and there. A very good reason for why have the engins break while they could have had the crew figure out that the star destoryer pulled them out and still sent a bourding party to find out why.
... Not to mention the only last surviving imperials on the free bird were bitten to death by a zombie who had been waiting in a closet for weeks, before the zombie was neutralized.
Normally I focus on saving survivors when in these situations, even when it seems hopeless. But this is one exception where I'd say just blow the ship. Sacrificing the few living, who may not even exist due to the danger and virulence, to protect other uninfected areas is arguably better here. It's just too much of a problem, and it WILL kill EVERYONE. Glassing, or even Death Starring which I've never advocated, an entire planet is acceptable to stop it.

The 'zombies' cant survive past like 10km from their horde so as long as they are kept on a ship and never touched again it would be fine

Fun fact: even if you blow up the ship, the parts and bodies will eventually crash into other ships or moons/dwarf planets, infecting inhabitants and continuing its spree.
Death Troopers are actually a nod to this very story. Part of their explanation is that Palpatine named them after a secret bio weapon project that reanimates dead tissue.
I think it was actually really done well. The legends books present them in a really good way. Not many things more terrifying than being trapped in a Star Destroyer with the living dead that can learn.
What about Halo’s Flood? Quite literally sentient, can spread by air, can control ships, and turned a moving city full of armored, skilled, and strong aliens into a hive in the matter of 27-28 days, and how did this infection start? One small ship.
That outbreak had already created a Gravemind on Delta Halo before spreading to High Charity, and the Covenant was in the middle of a Civil War at the time. It was basically the worst possible circumstances at the worst possible time.

You haven’t seen The Brethren Moons and their Markers,they are incredibly intelligent and they actively manipulate human beings and other creatures into bringing their markers into their society where the marker can start it’s spreading,it’s ridiculous how smart these living moons are
Oh I remember listening to Red Harvest, their ability to plan and set traps was rather terrifying. Equally so is the thought that technically that Academy and presumably planet was overrun and never purged.

Just finished listening to the 2 books this was in, and the stories they had were so fucking terrifying!!! As if regular zoms weren't bad enough, these things can learn and communicate, and even shooting them in the head or cutting their heads off, they STILL keep going! Not to mention that the virus itself is practically sentient and is so unrelenting and corrosive to any who has the horrible misfortune of being affected by. Zombies!! In space!!

I actually love Project Blackwing. It doesn’t really break the Star Wars Universe considering that there are way more powerful and terrifying things out there. Blackwing was only dangerous to those who are near the source of the infection.
Problem is the infection was finding ways to evolve and spread. Universe got lucky in those stories. Could have EASILY went WAY worse

@@ReadyComicsRoll Thankfully, the canisters they tried to use to simulate being near the horde did not work and caused the corpses to die again after being far enough from the initial outbreak. But I'm glad to finally meet a kindred spirit who saw that we didn't NEED zombies in Star Wars, much ones that learn and plan.
Then again I've never been a fan of zombies. Everything else in the realm of horror I'm surprisingly fine with.
The Star Destroyer “Vector”… carrying the Blackwing Virus… man the writer just couldn’t avoid that one could they? I seriously hope that they commented on that in universe cause that would be funny

And the Imperial prison barge that docked with it was the 'Purge', and the carrier shuttle the main characters used to escape was the 'Freebird'. The book wasn't exactly subtle lol

I remember a novel called Star Wars: Galaxy of Fear (which took place shortly after the events of A New Hope in Legends) where the main characters had to deal with a bio-organic weapon (zombies). I am not sure what the virus was called, but I think it was something similar to the Black Virus. It was scary, but I loved it back in the day...

Second Zombie mandalorians would be very compromising to especially the weaker Criminal parts of the universe third a zombie General Grievous will be tactically disadvantageous for us due to his knowledge strategies resources and locations of which to hold especially Palpatine or Count Dooku or even to Nobi Kenobi the same could work the opposite especially uniting small or criminal Empires to be credibly advantageous for people especially like Count Dooku or General Grievous especially when talking about the Clone Commanders which could serve as both good zombie generals and regular generals this is their fair share of intelligent and now it just of their environment and resources so I save they were to work together it would have to be highly coordinated but easily divided due to how far would have to initially be for which I have to take place further away from the outbreak which would be most prevalent and chaotic Kenobi and Yoda and few others in many other Jedi could probably survive the initial outbreak however many more would probably most likely Fall due to the lack of stability or General foresight in all honesty Clone Army and droid army or EFT

You can also see a red holographic panel on the door to the AI core, which indicates that it's a screenshot from Mass Effect 2.

"credits, starships, Imperial lives, their all meaningless to Vader" I 100% Belive Vader intended it to break out and take down a star destroyer, I Belive he wanted to see how effective it was but alone realizing it can't be controlled he abandoned the ship to it's fate

this is literally the only video i've ever watched that didn't like Project Blackwing, i mean yeah the second book Blood Harvest wasn't that good but that shouldn't completely change your opinion, well unless you read Blood Harvest -> Death Troopers, instead of Death Troopers -> Blood Harvest, Death Troopers is actually my favorite star wars book, anyway i liked the video

Flood. It's intelligent, therefor making it more dangerous and capable of learning, adapting, and evolving. It will find new ways to spread AND there is no known cure for it, other than complete destruction of any life it could further spread to

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that they needed to constant exposure to a preservative the Empire was using to try and hold to the decay process. In the Red harvest novel that explained the backstories of the virus within a day, Patient number two Lord scabros himself was almost turning into a skeleton.
As I said, please correct me if I'm wrong but that's the gist of what I got from the books.
I want a game about the vector where you are on a ship that gets caught in its tractor beam and are forced to roam the ship to find parts to shave your ship and crew.
This would make for an amazing dead space-like survivor horror game, were you are a prisoner among the purge and then must survive the dead inside of failing star destroyer. Fuck yeah
Oh that is just lovely. Blackwing Virus is the Star Wars version of the Flood from the Halo game universe. Body horror is just really creepy. Most people seem to have some sort of aversion to some monster parasite killing them and bursting out of them from somewhere, just like the Alien movies.
The Flood makes Project Blackwing look like a common cold.

I clearly remember that event and this virus in this game as I used to play Star Wars: Commander a lot before it got shut down.
I remember listening to this book on an overnight drive back to NY from Cape Cod. When the infected organs screamed in the introduction of the virus, I damn near drove off the road. It scared the utter shit out of me.
Damn, next up the Galactic Empire will be creating Death Rings instead of Death Stars

The fascinating and terrifying thing about the sickness is that since it's been shown to be capable of reasoning with its hosts, it's possible that it can be reasoned with in turn, under the right circumstances. For instance, perhaps you could successfully convince it to remain dormant in your body by arguing that keeping everyone asymptomatic would benefit it in the long run by allowing it to spread and infiltrate the galaxy at large without being noticed.
I hope they eventually listen to fans and make a Horror Movie about these guys that would be fucking crazy!
Or if they don't want to do that how about they make a story about them in the New Anime Star Wars show which is kind of like Marvel's What If but expiring stories across the Galaxy, What If had Marvel Zombies so its not out of the question

That second book (the prequel) was dumb as shit. Sith students and masters conveniently forget they can use the force (until they get infected) and get turned like regular humans. Like the author had the unrelated story lying in a drawer and just plugged Star Wars into it when he got the job.
I liked reading Deathrooper, it was a good book and the horror involved was pretty good i my eyes.

@@nightmarefury_ralph7358 nope. Death Star was built after revenge of the Sith happened. It was to take out any planets that could threat the empire. For example, the cloning planet kamino. Kamino was a planet used to create clone troopers for the grand army of the republic and the jedi. They destroyed kamino so groups like the rebel alliance couldn’t create their own army. This also prevented anakin from cloning his limbs and coming back to his full power.
This is probably why the empire wanted a Death Star-

According to Wookieepedia, while the events of the Death Troopers book are no longer canon, the existence of Project Blackwing is. That information comes from newer copies of the Star Wars Encyclopedia.

Until I came across videos like this I never knew they made what looks like comic books of the Star Wars universe where they have zombies like the comic book series Marvel Zombies man this is creepy.
Blackwing is something I for sure wanna see in a side film. Maybe some things different but a group of troopers and officers boarding a powered down star destroyer filled with undead imperials? Now that seems sick.

I’m just wondering like hypothetically, your on a flagship,fully manned that has a hyper laser cannon capable of blowing a planet to smithereens, you come across a planet controlled by imperials, there’s like one star destroyer orbiting the planet, no engines on, if. They don’t respond to calls, what do you do, your commander of this flagship and your unsure if the destroyer and planet on question are infected or overrun even

A zombie horror Game or series would be cool. With a slightly different story. Have a rebel group infiltrate the ship and then the virus breakers out. With the rebels trying to stay undercover and escape the ship.

Disney Trilogy is a greater nightmare than this.
Imagine if the airborne version was somehow unleashed in the Coruscant underworld? It would infect enough people to take over the planet before anyone knew it and from then on even if no one infected left the planet how long before the zombies find out how to operate the starships that litter the surface and begin infecting the nearby systems until the core worlds fall to the infection.

I wouldn’t even Death Star 1 planet, I would use the star killer base!!! If it went to more than one planet!!! It’s to bad this is Canon. Also, a stormtrooper on the purge was able to write One last note to his family which Zahara Cody was able to collect and gift to the family of this poor storm trooper. To think that this guy‘s last thoughts was about his family was quite heartbreaking ( r.i.p unknown storm trooper )

Man imagine a horror first person team based zombie Star Wars game that has you and a few other people going through the Star Destroyer doing objectives to get the hell out of there while trying not to get ripped to shreds by the intelligent horde of zombies yes to those that don't know they can learn that is how they get near by ship's by using a certain thing that pulls stuff towards the Star Destroyer and yes I forgot the name of the damn thing I know idiotic but you get what I mean but yeah a first person team based horror shooter with these fucking things would be terrifying especially because you could have it set in a What if timeline where the Virus was able to get out into the Galaxy and Infect a lot of people and it would basically be like Left 4 Dead meets Star Wars but it would but with a mix of No More Room In Hell cause it would be slower paced and more horror focused
