  • Coat rack similar to those created by Francis students on the campus of the Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale Colorado. This forged coat rack features two double coat hooks that are riveted to a back bar. This is a great intermediate project and would be good for Christmas or holiday gift giving.

    This video was posted in 2017 and I'm watching it in 2022. I'm a big fan of Black Bear Forge and it's quite interesting to see how your videography and presentation have improved over the years. All your videos are educational, but your more recent ones certainly show a higher level of quality and profesionalism. Regardless of when they were made, thank you for all your videos. They have taught me so much!

    Good for those students, and good for you for making it! You turn the tongs as smooth as we glassblowers roll a blow pipe! Really educational from a technical perspective. You don't waste a single calorie it seems. Maximal efficiency. Always cool to see :)

    Good Design, I like simple, sturdy, well thought out stuff like this. I spent a good number of years living in Appalachia and this kind of work takes me home again, thanks!

    I find it odd how you say about people leaving part way through your videos... I watched this all the way through yet it was on my page as if I watched only part of it. now letting it play through again just so you get the credit you deserve.

      Well it really isn't about credit. Mostly i want people to be getting the information I an presenting.

    Is there a special meaning to the X with four dots? I see that mark on a lot of your work. Great project, I can't wait to make one for my tin pants and forge apron!

    • @BlackBearForge
      @BlackBearForge  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As far as I'm concerned it is just a design I like and not not an original design either. I have herd this referred to as "hugs and kisses". I suppose i you look at old symbolism you might be able to imply some form of meaning to the design.

      A cross with four dots could mean distilled vinegar, as used by the alchemists and early chemists.

    I have been blacksmithing for a few years and I tend to put texture on my pieces. Is ball-peen texturing considered tacky? Is this something I shouldn't be doing? I'm curious as to why. Is it because of the correlation to mass-produced "hand forged" products?

    • @BlackBearForge
      @BlackBearForge  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its really a personal choice. But you do find lots of things sold as "forged" where the only forging was just to beat it up with a ball pain. So personally I find it a bit of a cliche.

    • @heydenlabelle513
      @heydenlabelle513 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BlackBearForge one thing I've actually been liking more is texturing with a cross pien. It makes a sort of "wood grain like" texture, which I really enjoy. Been sort of leaning towards that sort of nature theme with my work.
      I appreciate your input. Wisdom of seasoned blacksmiths for me goes a long way. Especially since I've learned the trade from people like you. So thanks!
