Woodstock is a small town in Ulster county, southeastern New York lying in the foothills of the southern Catskills mountains. Woodstock gave its name to the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, a rock festival that was held in Bethel, New York, in neighboring Sullivan county on August 15-17, 1969. (The festival had been forced to move from its planned location in Woodstock itself after protests from the local townspeople.) The Woodstock Festival occasioned the harmonious gathering of a crowd of about 400,000 young rock-music devotees and marked what is considered the high point of the American youth counterculture of the 1960s. My dad is from New York, and his mother/my grandmother is buried (along with generations of ancestors) in Woodstock Cemetery. I was 15 yrs old the year of the music festival and listened to my dad's worries of the possibility of "hippies desecrating the cemetery!" Much to the family's relief the festival was actually miles away in Bethel, New York.
