    An observation I’ve made is that crossings that lack pre war markings are built over the road while the ones that do have markings are a little more flush with the road.
    I think some of these crossings are examples of where the NCR laid new tracks, the powder gangers mentioned that they were brought in to work on restoring/laying new tracks.

      And since it's an alternate timeline all the way back to around the 40s or 50s and the bombs drop in 2070's, any discrepancies can be chalked up to just different contruction plans or societal needs as Fallout's world is very drastically different to ours. Advanced technology, but advanced stylisitically divergent from our advancemant.

    I like that the lore you can get from dialogue checks out with the world building. Never even noticed how new the machines at the quarry were until you said something. There was a huge disconnect between the suits making deadlines and the dev teams. Bethesda was helping the devs by teaching them how to work in the engine, but the people negotiating with Bethesda just said yes to 18 months instead of doing actual negotiation.

    So, I noticed during one of the shots of the side of the locomotives that they read "Barstow Express AT&SF". The AT&SF, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe (most well-known as just the "Santa Fe"), was a real railroad company. But strangely enough... They didn't have tracks to Vegas. The closest they ever got appears to be off the bottom of the NV map. Although, while I am unable to confirm whether it was an AT&SF subsidiary, there was a company that branched from their lines through Ivanpah and nearly to Primm. The real company that goes through Vegas is the Union Pacific, who are also the origin of that shield design on top of the station in Freeside at 15:36, although that may be down to nvRanger's mod, I'd need someone to confirm. The Union Pacific got control of the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad, who had originally built the line through Vegas. The LA&SL met the AT&SF off the bottom of the map, however, at a junction in Daggett, appropriately enough, near Barstow, bringing us in somewhat of a chaotic information loop back to the name on the engines (which appear to be EMD E-Units, either E7, E8, or E9s, probably E8s for both statistical and AT&SF historical reasons) in game.
    Thanks for reading that wall of text, to those that do.

    • @nvRanger
      @nvRanger  11 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      The station in frreeside does get its design from the Tale of Two Wastelands mod. You can access Fallout 3 by taking the train inside the station. Perhaps the devs of that mod are familiar with the rail lines of the area.
      Great information, someone else mentioned some similar info (not exactly the same). I find it really cool, but I don't know much at all about it. Perhaps the NCR is resonsible for bringing those locomotives into the region.
      I should mention that I do not believe the one at calville bay has the Barstow branding in vanilla. It may in a shot or two of mine due to a retexture mod (my fault).

    New Vegas was clearly rushed but you can tell they poured love into the game and built a world first then filled that world with as much content as they could given the time they had, rather than just throwing a bunch of stuff together without any forethought. It’s really quite sad because you can feel a little bit of that touch in fallout 4, but it feels like instead of fleshing everything out at some point they just decided to slap a bunch of interesting areas into the settlement system, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but doesn’t exactly entice players to ever go back except to juggle resources around before you unlock that one perk that lets you establish supply routes which isn’t exactly fun. Then you move to starfield and you have like 2 locations you’d ever want to go. I think I’ve revisited a base I made like once. It’s just so barren it’s actually physically annoying

    • @nvRanger

    This would be a great layout plan for any current or future model railroaders. The buildings, terrain and track plan could easily be replicated. The roll of the railroad would be just as you said would, restoring freight and passenger service to the area, with security forces on board to clear out death claws and other undesirables. Bill of ladings (assembling the train with the correct rolling stock) would be randomly drawn from cards, with delivery locations on a timetable. Random encounter cards could be drawn at certain locations with locals and enemies. A roll of some dice would indicate success or failure with the reward or consequence. Enjoyed the video, thanks.

    Boulder City! Such an amazing place! With... one really nice, but completely empty bar. And one guy standing outside. And only one easily-skippable quest.
    It would have been a great little place to have some sort of power vacuum without the support from the NCR trains coming and going, mysterious crimes going on, the cement mixing factory trying to make ends meet, traders trying desperately to survive and considering either becoming caravans, or dealing with the Crimson Caravan...

      The way I’d do this would be to make the quest givers The Followers. Maybe the group in the railway tower is there to find a full map of the rail lines of Nevada.
      The introduction quest is to go and find the rail map, maybe in one of the rail stations.
      Once you give them the map they then task the player with working with clearing teams.
      The motive for The Followers could be to establish a trade relationship with the Boomers, once done the rail line is then operational and you can take a train from the Boomers in the north to the tower in the centre(ish) then down to near the Mojave Outpost.
      Then throw in a few side quests about clearing other disruptions to open more stops and help maintain the railway. And a couple of scavenging quests to find parts!
      That’s how I would structure the quest line anyway.

    • @nvRanger
      @nvRanger  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +12

      I would imagine that it has to do with different designers working on different areas and trying to keep things a bit streamlined in a cluttered section of the map.
      I also imagine that they try and give unique identity to each neighborhood with the quests involved in them. It would be hard as players to distinguish them if we were just going all over the place for the relevant quests. Its a good question though, one only the devs could answer.

    While Repconn does have a guided tour, I think a lot of the employees might also be using the train station.
    The Rock Crushing plant might have originally be used for crushing limestone to be used at a concrete plant, or for crushing other stones into gravel, possibly for cement (mix of concrete, sand, and gravel) or train track ballast. Or for crushing ore-bearing stone to be used at the steel plant. In any case it seems like a useful place given that it's near a trainline with such things. Just something to keep in mind if you do get into office for the NCR.
    As for the train wall, I guess I shouldn't underestimate the capabilities of a large quantity of weirdoes tripping on hallucinogens, stimulants, and synthetic steroids.

    It just goes to show just how important the rest of the infrastructure of New Vegas was to the NCR, not just the Hoover Dam. Hell, the entire reason the Powder Gangers are as prominent as they are is because the NCR had to rely on the inmates to rebuild tracks, with their attention split between policing the Strip, protecting caravans and fighting the Legion, I'd be surprised if the Powder Gangers weren't successful in their riot/revolt. Had the Legion not have become as big of a threat as soon as they did the NCR could've probably rebuilt Vegas. It's possible that their previous victory against the Mojave Brotherhood got to their collective heads and forgot just how spread thin they actually are.
    As it turns out, train infrastructure can be used as a narrative device.

    The comments around the area of new vegas is interesting because games rarely make settings where its actually a world thats a shadow of its former self, when that was quite a common experience in post roman history and elsewhere in world history. The city of Rome had 1 million people in 100 AD, then only 50,000 for large parts of the middle ages. Living in new Vegas, looking on the trains and old buildings, probably feels a lot like a Roman walking through the overgrown coliseum.

      @@nvRanger. 4's railroad tracks don't have as many junctions from what I remember and most of the associated locations like Oberland Station aren't particularly useful, though there are, naturally, some exceptions. (There's also ZERO indication that the railroads in that game have ever been rebuilt or restored to operation, which makes sense for both 4 and 76 as there's probably not a lot of people left who even know how to operate a train, let alone maintain the tracks.)

    I never noticed the UP shield on top of the Vegas depot. 😅 Union Pacific and Boston and Maine are Fallout cannon.
    Btw it’s just a locomotive. Cars are what the locomotive pulls. 😊

      Yea are conductor earlier in the comments corrected me on the locomotive thing, thanks.
      The UP shield I believe is only there because of the tale of two wastelands mod. Not there in vanilla unfortunately

    I would have split minor and major disruptions. Lot of the minor ones could be cleared in a day or so (week max) without heavy equipment, where as the major ones would be a much more expensive and time consuming to clear.

    But what about the rails near NoVac? :) But I only remembered them from the Otters video and they also dont make alot of sense.
    The railsystem seems to be very functional, Fallout just has a habit of making them steep as rollercoasters in places :)

    • @nvRanger
      @nvRanger  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think the steepness has to do with the scaled down map. What is a gradual decline become a steep one when condensed.
      I forgot the Novac rail line tbh. Couple others have mentioned the same. Not sure it’s relevant to the main anyway. Seems to be a product of cut content.

    the amount of views that these new vegas videos get in such a short span youd think that bethesda would try to revive it

      It'd be up to Obsidian, really; Bethesda's main involvement would have been through their publishing branch: Bethesda Softworks.
