2022 VW GTI Base (S) DSG / Less Money & Less Frustrating

  • The new GTI is an excellent car, and the base model is the best way to buy it for multiple reasons. It might still hold a price premium over the Subaru WRX and Honda Civic SI, but I think it makes a good case for spending more.
    Thank you, Royal on the Eastside for letting me borrow the GTI for today's review.

    Kudos for doing a review of the base GTI S. I can't tell you how frustrating it has been that every single TH-cam car reviewer has reviewed the mid and upper trim models with the terrible infotainment system and complained endlessly about it. This model fixes that problem and it's 5-10K cheaper!

      Thank you, it definitely makes it easier to interact with. It's been that way because VW doesn't like to ship base model cars to the press, and it was hard to find a base model at a dealer there for a while too. Now it's just missing a physical way to adjust the climate control!

      I think they do that because they get loaned the cars by manufacturers/dealerships and those guys want us all to see the top models so we will want all that luxury, etc. That irks me too. Most people don't buy the top models because those few extras are vastly overpriced. It's like a wealth tax

    Wasn't really considering the VW GTI, until your review. The *S* trim with the DCT _might_ be ideal for me. Not outrageously expensive. I can live with the incredibly stubby and goofy shifter. (First time I saw a pic. of the interior, I legit thought that I was looking at the keyfob. and thought, "Oh, how nice that VW incorporated a spot where you can store your fob while driving.") I can live with the not-real buttons on the steering wheel. Even the fact that to access the heat and A/C, I'd have to go through the info-tainment system.
    Heck, I can even live with the lack of a lockable trunk. Quite a bit to sacrifice. But the lower price-tag of the *S* along with the performance would be worth it. And, I LOVE the fact that it takes Regular. I refuse to buy any car that requires Premium gas. I'm not looking for a Dodge hellcat killer. I want something that'll still be practical, but won't make me feel dead inside when I apply foot to pedal.

    UPDATE: I sold my GTI after one year. Even with the real volume knob, the user interface with all the fake buttons was so difficult to use I feared I might crash the car when simply trying to change an HVAC setting. Good riddance. (Original post from May 2022 is after this) I don’t know if there’s anybody who keeps track of these kinds of things, but I just wanted to say that your review of the GTI S absolutely was the deciding factor in me purchasing the one that I took delivery of today. Thanks for the great review on what was/is a hard to find vehicle.

      was it just because of the infotainment?

    • @KXKKX
      @KXKKX ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@danielllanes6894 It contributed, but it wasn't the only problem. The "S" doesn't have voice control and it doesn't have the sliders so there is no way to control basic systems like heat other than digging through menus.
      The safety-systems (adaptive cruise, automatic braking) sporadically and intermittently failed. Probably could have been fixed with a new steering wheel, but it was on national backorder for an indeterminate amount of time.
      The final straw was the second time that the backing-up safety sensors freaked out, "sensed" a non-existent obstacle and slammed on the brakes with no warning.
      Car had three recalls, a loose radiator and a backup camera that was still borked after replacement. Driving dynamics & engine were far better than the price, but everything else was a serious let down.

    I think the base model is the best way to go. Plus, you can use the savings to mod the car anyway you want. VW can score some cheap and easy points by adding the buttons to all of the infotainment screens for all the versions for the mid-cycle refresh. They are already set up to do so, all they have to do is configure the buttons to fit a larger screen.

    I have a Mk6 GTI and for a while I wasn’t even considering Mk8s at all but after looking at prices of used Mk7 golf Rs and even some newer GTIs, $32k for a brand new GTI that has everything you really need is becoming a more and more compelling idea. Dynamical, many journalists have spoken highly of the Mk8s and you really can’t beat the versatility something like a GTI offers.

I agree with a lot of the things you said, one thing was the quality for the price is a little disappointing. My car has the autobahn seats which sort of make it feel more higher quality but overall they can definitely improve on the quality side. Driving wise this car is one of the best cars for the money. To fix the wheel spin issue i currently have new tires on mine Michelins pilot sport As tires and it grips very well of the line and through the corners. I'm curious if they improved anything for the r since that is around 45k! I haven't even seen one yet.

    Have had a GTI SE for a couple of months and love the handling and performance. Easy to drive in all situations, I think it looks better in the flesh than it does in pics. I've had every generation GTI apart from 4 and 5 and like this one the most, it feels like it wants to go faster around my fav twisty roads. Some of the interior trim definitely could and should be better, but I do prefer the interior design over the MK7. After a couple of days the lack of buttons is a non issue, you get used to them quickly - although I admit I didn't like them at first (which is probably why most reviewers slate them as they are presumably only in the car for a short time). It is possible to get 50+ MPG if driving very sedately, but just driving normally I usually get around 37 MPG, however it's too easy to get that down to 20 MPH if you're having fun. Overall I'd prefer a Golf R but my wife would hate it, so the GTI is a great all rounder.

    Liveability tip - if you click the heated seat icon in the bottom left of the infotainment screen, it shortcuts to the climate controls. I find it easier than hitting the CLIMA button in that lower haptic cluster. I basically never use that cluster except to fully change between comfort/sport. On the DSG, I'm usually in Comfort mode and just pull the gear nubbin down to engage the sport transmission setting if I'm feeling frisky.

    I would choose the manual gearbox over the DSG in the VW Golf GTI, just because the brake hold feature is not offered even in the autobahn trim. It’s a minor inconvenience to constantly press the brake pedal at a red light with the automatic; but with the manual, I simply leave the car in neutral while idling. I'd call a dealer and ask, or I'd just go SE so you can get the sunroof and then get the black wheel package. Ultimately, it's so hard to get cars right now, it might be difficult to just find one, let alone find one with the black wheel package so do be aware!

    This is a nice review. I am considering a base GTI and a Mazda3 hatch, both with manual transmissions. You talk about reliability at the end of the video but don’t mention the Mazda.
    Frankly, that’s one my main concerns with the VW… we have had terrible luck with two Audis with the 2.0 turbo. I have owned numerous Mazdas over the years and can’t recall ever having mechanical issues to deal with in any of them.
    The Mazda comes pretty loaded for a bit lower than the price of the GTI S trim. There is less power, but it isn’t a slug by any means. Bit also, no turbo to worry about. Thoughts?

    Smooooth, precise and delicate review, good point, that’s the trim to get, I’d get a manual, but these are German made right? And a WRX doesn’t have a better reliability history?

    • @Realistick
      @Realistick  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! The WRX just has an iffy history, and with the 2022 being all new, I just can't say that it will be any more dependable than this. Really, even though the SI isn't perfect, it's the only one I could think of that I could say is noticeably more dependable. Unless we count the mazda3 turbo, but that's kind of another proposition all together.

      I think the GTI would be cheaper and easier to maintain since there is not AWD. Plus this trim doesn't have a sunroof so it can't get a sunroof leak. I'd imagine a lot of issues are ironed out since this engine has been in production for so long. It is made in Germany where the MK7s were made in Mexico.

    I’d love to see a “sport” trim in a few model years. Similar to the 2017 sport, based on the s trim with cloth seats an no sunroof, but this time add DCC and the lights from the higher trims and maybe some lighter 18s with summer tires. Until then, the s is the best GTI.

  • @gregweber3387
    @gregweber3387 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just started looking at the new 2023 models and I agree that the S trim is the best value for the money. I have a VW Eos and I barely use the sunroof feature and I don't use Sirius XM in any of my vehicles even though some of them have that feature. A white GTI S with the DSG is the one I wouldn't mind owning.

  • @JCTiggs1
    @JCTiggs1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I still feel the S trim is the best value and more in line for what a GTI has always been about: an affordable hot hatch. The SE and Autobahn prices are difficult to justify and bring the cost of the GTI that much closer to the R.

  • @mc-fine
    @mc-fine หลายเดือนก่อน

    Late to the party but having test driven the other trims and the R the one thing I found lacking was the S trim not having DCC. I felt the difference in the handling compared to the others was enough that i would be missing a key part of the driving experience.
    But overall with the same engine, same LSD that makes it more fun to drive than other cars in it's class this is the best value. Just missing some of the fun to drive.

    How does this base model S with a manual transmission compare to the Mazda3 Premium hatchback with a manual transmission in terms of the driving , shifting gears , NVH noise , pleasure ??
    ... I am not trying to get an opinion of the nice Mazda3 leather interior, just from the pleasure and enjoyment of driving the car itself and to find out as a daily commuter which would be more satisfying to own for ten years?
    ... Do you think the VW S base will be reliable? Worth sacrificing the MPG difference and do you have to use premium grade gas? Ride quality and comfort? Thanks in advance! Great review! I wonder how these seats are without the separate headrests, kind of like in my S4. I really like the heated steering wheel, the heated cloth seats and parking sensors in the S trim. So with the new shifter, how do you get the gears to hold when you are using the paddles? In the older one, you move the shifter to the right in the manual position. Forgot to ask, is this the same DSG as in the MK 7.5? I miss the wet clutch DSGs...

    • @Realistick
      @Realistick  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you, and to start the manual mode I just pulled the paddle and to put it back in auto I just flicked the gear shift back to D instead of S. I never tried a long press on the upshift but that usually does it too. I believe it's the same unit, I believe the only big powertrain change here was a different turbo for this gen. However it was kind of tricky for me to find the differences between the two gens.

Curious though about the rear VW camera badge being deployed (tilted out) with shots of the car driving slowly forward towards the beginning of the video. Worse reliability? I didn't know time machines have been invented? Other than wastegates and water pumps on the MK7, this is a refinement and fix of those issues, early Euro MK8's have no complaints unlike early MK7. "true limited slip"? A full on Haldex center diff is not a "fake" LSD just because it's electronically controlled. I actually went and test drove an S today and checked out the SE and autobahn. I was looking for an R but thought maybe if I can't get one now due to availability, I'd get the cheapest one as a holdover.
    I drive a lot and currently have a mk 7 autobahn. I'm not super picky, or at least I thought, but they all felt much less nice than my car, particularly in the cloth interior. Mine is leather. The lack of adjustability in the seat made me question if I could own it after having the highly adjustable seats. I'm getting some miles on mine now and hit the point where I felt like I need to pull the trigger, got amped up to go grab one today, and just couldn't do it.
    I love the hot hatch performance of the GTI, but maybe I need to check out an IS-350 to satisfy my desire for better interior.
