My grandfather told me when i was about 13, he said "my boy, politics, religion, your pay at work, and your favorite fishing and or hunting spots are personal, and should be kept that way." I believe they were wise words and have served me well the past 57 years.

I live in Wichita just a little south of Newton, it's funny how times change the site of Tuttle’s Saloon is around Second and Main in Newton, there is an O-Reilly's auto parts at that location now, lol, not sure if that was done on purpose. You can't throw a rock around here and not hit an old west historical site, most of them forgotten.
I think Kansas couldn't put that time period behind it fast enough, as fascinating as that time period was, I think it has always been an embarrassment to the Topeka wankers. From the Indian wars fought here to Civil War strife long before the Civil War started, the cattle drives, the outlaws, Kansas is the Old West but not promoted very well by the state.

New fan from the old world, here! Just a handful of weeks ago I stumbled upon my first "extravaganza". I have always loved the "wild west", expecially the true history that hides behind that smokescreen of stories. The real tales are even so much bigger than the spinned yarn, telling of real human beings, making their deeds even larger!
What can I say? Since then I am addicted. One of the points I cherish most is your sense of perspective, naming all the brutalities and inhumanities, but setting them into the context of their time and place. The world has changed since then, after all, and you have to look at both sides of the coin to value it.
Although O have still to catch up with the archive, there is one particular figure I did not find in searching, and I would very much like to hear your take on him. Charles Fremont. While from my german perspective he seems a central figure of the "official record" How The West Was Won, somehow he is buried beneath a heap of judgements. Either the daring explorer that cartographed the West next to singlehandedly, or the profiteur that collected all the fame for other men's work. I would really love to have you peel away all that personal opinion (and Jessie Fremont's love-tinted narrative of course)!
Keep up the good work, sir!

I've heard the story of this Riley boy before. He was for sure nearly dead feom consumption when he killed the eight men.
Supposedly McClusky was his only friend. Everyone was mean to the boy and wouldn't go near him on account of the consumption.
McClusky took pity on him and befriended him which meant everything to the young boy. His revenge on the men who killed his friend was epic and the kind of deed you expect from someone who had nothing left to lose and was dying.

How do you spend two summers in Newton in the 80s visiting my great grandparents that is a pretty neat museum. It’s the only interesting thing in Newton Kansas. I was bored to death. But the museum was pretty cool with all the old cans and wagon wheels and pieces of Barbwire and stuff from the Chisholm Trail that was really interesting in the old photos, but there’s only so many times you can look at the same thing that all summer I’ll end up doing besides visiting my great grandparents was going to that museum twice and playing one video game that was in one little diner in the whole town but it’s pretty cool to hear a story of the new massacre. Probably the only interesting thing that’s ever happened to that town.

I cannot stand it either, sir, when my duels expend the maximum quantity of Freedom Seeds (either by finding out that shooting under duress, AKA the Two-Way Range is much different than chillin’ on the bench rest…or some sorry SOB like The Deacon slips some steel under his blouse as well as his smoke wagon skins…ya feel me?).
That’s why I sneak a Colt Sheriff’s model down muh drawazzzzz. (That’s Doc Holliday pronunciation of ‘drawers’).
I do long for those times again….

Having moved to and lived in Medicine Lodge, KS for over thirty years, and knowing the local publisher who's history with the city's newspaper dates back for it's entire history, , I know they loved bringing up any history of any notoriety and republishing it in their 'days of yore' section...most of what I saw was church socials and other mundane hogswallerin'... not that there wasn't SOME excitement, like Henry Brown and the bank robbery gone wrong or Carry Nation's antics or the signing of the Peace Treaty before there was even before there was a town, but I can assure you, no gun/knife fight ever occurred in that town...ever. ( if you'd like to hear about the hushed up prohibition speakeasy tunnel they had, I know all about that ) They still have all those newspapers bound up and gloryfied ... if'n you wanna bore yourself to death...

I always spoke about religion and politics when I bartended. But it was easy because I was in Portland and was always the only man in the room with a pistol.
This country was founded upon controversial conversations in bars. So that was my logic. The patrons knew it. And we always kept it civil, though there were a few temper flare ups. No one died and not a single fist fight in 8 years.
My detractors always came back because I poured strong and could back my religious and political stances with intelligence. One fellow who is now a best friend converted from bleeding heart liberal to conscientious libertarian. Now THAT'S drawing blood in Portland, Oregon.

Bob Bell is a great historian all historical characters of the West, Rob word is a great historian on the western movies, as well as others. I've been watching them for years. I've learned so much from Bob about the TruWest that I didn't know before. And a lot of interesting facts about those times and days. I've watched a couple videos on Jim Bridger on History Channel. And there's another fella that I watch the video of, can't remember his name, but he was also a scout and Trailblazer of those days in the 1840s oh, and I believe he also worked with the Lewis Meriwether Expedition.

You should really read up on the history of newton and Wichita. It’s not so simple. Myself I think it really shows that some towns were just too stupid to really thrive. It’s the same today. I live close and do business with both. I quite by accident came upon the history of newton and the days of the cowboys. It was wild until it got too cold to return or they ran out of money and left or both. Wichita was nothing then. Two founders of Wichita as far as I can see did not have a rail road at the time. They went and whined to newton. Oh we have no railroad to get our wheat to a market like yours. If only we had access we could bring it all here. So newton built the railroad to Wichita. Oops cattle stopped there and oops a railroad went in goin clear to both coasts. Remember not all rail lines did that some only went east to Salina then Kansas City or to Chicago. Not much goin west.

You think you’re cool. But you’ll never be as cool as Kevin Bacon reading history like a boss coming on like an average guy named Josh.
