Sand further, fill with bondo, sand smooth would have fixed your lines showing through. Couple more coats of primer would have helped also. Otherwise, pretty good job. You're one of the few I see who wet sanded after the clear to remove the orange peel. Nice work overall.
Absolutely no need for bondo. He needed to sand with 220. Focusing only on the roughest parts. Then 320 or 400 everything. Primer next. No need to primer everything. Only on the discoloration. Then 400 sanding everything down. All dry sandpaper. No need for wet sanding. Then paint and clear. (12 years experience)
Black is the hardest colour to paint, it shows every imperfection! Your job looks good besides showing the old clear lines but it's a big job to hide all of that. You did a great job and I loved the video.
From a professional in the auto repair industry: your first reported paint job is pretty good, minus the small sanding defects from the primer. Only big issue I would say to you is to make sure to a get a respirator mask, especially with all the carcinogens inside that 2K clear coat. Take from my experience, you don't want any lung diseases popping up on you out of nowhere. They're definitely not joke when it happens. Other than that, pretty decent work. Keep practicing your craft and you'll do well.
100% agree please get a mask. My cousin was diagnosed with lung disease 2 months ago they literally gave him 24 months to live. All because he was to lazy and manly to use a mask when painting
What tips do you have for someone that wants to do their hood themselves? I have a 2015 Toyota. There’s two big spots, but I know it would be better to do the whole hood. What steps would be best to make it look as best as possible.
@@chance7312 Aside from always wearing a respirator, make sure you sand down the surface until smooth and evened out before painting to ensure a better/ even finish (If you strip the paint to the bare metal/ fiber glass/ polypropylene plastic, you will definitely need to add a layer of primer before painting). On that note, I am largely against aerosol paint cans as even with automotive grade acrylic enamel they don't always spread evenly, especially when the paint has solvents in it to spread out the enamel (more chance of runs and cracks to form though gravity guns can do the same too technically). I recommend using a pneumatic gravity gun and painting somewhere where weather conditions are favorable. Indoors with a climate controlled space (room temp if you're doing it at home). Always paint from one side to the other, never stop in between.
@@chance7312 Also keep in mind that a slight amount of orange peel is normal. During the drying process, paint will have a textured look as the paint itself is shrinking. Wet sanding the surface evenly by hand afterwards with 2000-2500 grit sandpaper (if you don't have any uneven surfaces or medium to heavy scratches and swirls) will be your best friend in addition to using a decent polishing tool with a decent polishing compound.
Bro!!! That looks awesome man! I’ve got to do the hood on my fJ cruiser. I’m going to do exactly how you did thanks for instruction. Doesn’t have to be perfect but for the money you save well worth it. Great job!

Just take it to maaco. The cost in rattlecans will be $200, with sandpaper, an extra $20 something dollars and the average MAACO will charge 300. You are only saving about 80 bucks and chances are it will show in the quality. My recommendation is only paint bumpers DIY style, not anything metal. Regardless goodluck though
Good job all things considered. I have to do this to my hood also and saw what pattern you used. What cons would you take from your experience? I was told to let the paint cure for 3 weeks at least before washing and waxing/ polishing it
Just started doing this and I managed to get the peeling clear coat lines to blend in with the rest of the good paint . I kept running my fingers over the lines to see if I could feel it or not. Everything go well so far.
Awesome video Brian. I want to paint my black car (in the car roof area) also. Could you please provide the list of the stuff you bought from Amazon? Thanks.
Working on my f150 front bumper grill and Hood. And the roof that's bad. First time doing it. What I see that you've done is just as good as I do probably better than me. You did a good job. If do you ever do it again. Take more time on each step. I bet you'll do even better. As is great job.
You did a good job. Sand a lot before primer then use a primer / surfacer high build and apply 3 coats and finish with 800 grit. That should fill in the clear coat marks
No need for bondo. You just needed 220 sandpaper ALL DRY. and focusing only on the roughest parts. Feel with your hand that there’s no more rough edges. Then finish with 400 grit. Dry. Primer ONLY where there’s discoloration. No need to primer everything. Sand everything with 600 dry. Then paint and clear and buffer.
Good you noticed what you missed. Good job. I am working on Audi A4 as well. I will be painting the New Bonet and New wing panel with Can black paint. Fingers crossed 🤞 😂
Hi Brian, I need to do my Honda CRV hood. Is there anything you would have done differently? Would you invest in a gun and quart of paint instead? Was this cost effective? Thank you for your honest video and any suggestions!!
Hi there, make sure you sand down the old clear coat pretty well and even. You don’t really need a gun if you’re just painting the hood. Just follow what I did with the video and you should be ok. And yes it was cost effective. Body shop wanted to charge $500 to just paint the hood. This cost me about $200 with everything and I learned something new in the process.

I have 2014 mazda 3 black and scratched my side panel and door with a dent. I need to pull and fix the dent first and then use filling and spray paint. Lets see how it goes. Any advice?
Yes pull the dent out and use bondo to even it out. My only advice is to make sure you sand off old clear coat best as you can so it doesn’t show with new paint like it did to me.
I thought you had to put the clear over slightly wet base coat to give the clear something to grab onto. One other video showed a 10 minute window between coats. ?
My wife is a car enthusiast and taking courses in learning the English language. She told me about your video: ''How to paint a car at home using Rattle Snake''. I TOLD HER THAT I WOULD NEVER USE YOU TO PAINT MY CAR. My face looked painted BLACK AND BLUE the next day.🤣😂😂
Hey how much did all the supplies cost u? Even if it's a ballpark number. N good shit I need to do the same on mine or seeing if I can find a decent hood at a junkyard.
Great job and detailed video!I have two questions: 1. Does it need to be wet sanded after the second clear coat? 2. Do you have to remove the hood in order to paint it? Thanks! I’m trying to do everything on my own with my car too.
Next time start from rhe middle of the hood n work your way to the end then do the other side of the hood the same way instead of spraying different directions
rep prep prep, it's all about the prep. I think that you know that you didn't sand the original paint well enough. Unfortunately, it's next to impossible to tell on video how close you are to having sanded it all out, but it could prove an interesting experiment to try to "fix" this as opposed to redoing it. The traditional answer is to sand it down to get it even, prime anyplace you sanded through, and then base and clear. OK. I'd be tempted to try to fix it instead, especially if the hood is otherwise flat: instead of sanding it down completely, start with 1000grit (I might consider 600 or 800, but being inexperienced I'd tell you to start with 1000, it will go slower but you'll be less likely to mess it up), and try to see if you can even it out without sanding into the basecoat. Even possibly giving it a heavier coat of clear over and around the uneven areas first. If you can manage to even it out or get it really close without significantly sanding into the base then you could go over what you have left with just clear, kind of like doing a flow coat, and then buff and finish. As far as your overall technique goes- you don't have to go as light for the first layer, that's mostly to prevent runs and chemical reactions in difficult situations, which a hood laying flat is not. Going that light might result in a sandy surface on your later coats, just more work to smooth out. Second, especially for the base and clear, keep your spray pattern going front to back to front, with the length of the car. That is less likely to cause any mottling/zebra stripes that you'll notice when you're done (your eyes won't be as likely to notice it if it's there it goes with the length of the car).
You will have problems with adhesion and longevity waiting that long between base and clear coat. Best to wait no longer than 1 hour for the best chemical adhesion.
@@hhova29those nozzles are made of plastic, but you need a special primer on plastic. So, not being prepped in any way, the paint will not bond properly and will come off - tearing away the paint around it as well.
