I've had a 89 and a 93 model CR 500. Loved those bikes. Depending on the distance of the start I did 3rd gear starts. Didn't rev the motor too much, like on a 250 or 125, let out the clutch as needed and rolled on the power to cut down on wheel spin. Pulled many hole shots. As another guy stated, don't tap out the rpm's for the power like on a 250/125. Go one gear higher and let the torque work. I would love to have another one just to play on now.
Hear the way it's idling? A little high, a little unstable? That tells me the crank seals are leaking. Leaky seals lead to a fried piston. They're easy to change, just spike or drill a hole in the metal face of the seal and thread in sheet metal screw, then use pliers to pop it out. Be careful not to damage the shaft or the hole. Put a little grease on the running surface of the new seal and gently tap it into place.
@@MrCR500AF lean at idle. Proper diagnosis. Could be several things. Sounds like mr peter had bad crank seals at one time. Ive never owned a CR500 but chances are ive wrenched on a few in the past. Sure wish id have saved about 20 of these as new. I could probably have retired by now!

As a young teen I pestered and pestered my old man to ride his YZ490, eventually he gave in. Didn't crash but only rode it once. Respect to those who can ride these fast. Their totally nuts. With all respect the 450f don't have the juice these do and they're a fair bit harder to ride. The four stroke is more like riding an armchair vs being strapped to dynamite.

Most of the reason is emissions. Maybe the answer is an lubricating oil that's not harmful. Two strokes would be in again. Saying that, the 4 strokes in a way are already achieving the same.

Great video guys! I ride a 91 Cr250. It sounds like the bike needed alittle tuning, and with it would no doubt be holeshotting by a mile.. All the soft suspended front end high flying was hilarious, awesome to see a big ol' bike out ripping with the pros to see how it stacks up. Watching Tim look back especially after talking about the holeshot was priceless... good show.

Nice job, those bikes are a handful. I had a CR500 ice bike that I got dirt cheap because the motor grenaded. The piston broke in half and kept running until the rod jammed in the exhaust ports. It had holes in the crankcases through the bottom and into the transmission I had to get welded up. Once I got that sorted out, it was just as terrifying as ever!!! Everyone should own one at some point in their life!

I've raced more than 9 years in Belgium only riding 500 'cc two stroke strating in 86... first year on a Husky 430 CR, then KX 500 for two seasons to be convinced that my four CR500R where really the best joyful motors ever... Oh boy, I really miss those days. Anyway, thank you guys for the revival.
Thanks for posting! It was good to see a 500 back on the track. But coming from someone that raced 500's for years, your riding it like a 250. Shift up and use the meaty part of the mid range. Thanks where they pull the hardest, 500's are fairly flat on top. Again, thanks for posting.
I've always thought if the 500's would of kept on been produced with the technology today advancing so quickly in motor sports what a 500 on track would be like with all the launch control & gadgets the 450 4strokes have today, it's undeniable they would be unstoppable bikes if they had been produced & updated through out the years, lovely bikes & a engine class that has its own legacy in the industry.

Always loved the idle of those big bore 2 strokes. They vibrated horribly, I had a buddy that had one that was a beast but sheesh I couldn't stand riding it due to the vibration you got through the handlebars.

When you start on a 2stroke 500 shift it into 3rd and hold it flat,it will chase anything down,and the meateast back tire it will fit,it will burn any 4stroker it's just a different riding style
Love to see him ride my old 83 model YZ 490 K. Was built for the Finke Desert Race back in 84. It makes a normal 490 feel slow.. believe it or not, its one of the smoothest bikes to ride with 14 inches of travel either end. Hasnt run for nearly thirty years, just sits in m shed. I also have a CR 480 that is shmiko. Even that feels slow in comparison. The most daunting thing about the Yz is the hieght of it, but when ya sit on her she sits just a couple of inches higher than standard. Its bitten and thrown off nearly every single person who ever rode it. Its like riding a 125 style motor but in 600 quantities. 120 mph piece of piss when she ran her desert gearing
Thanks for posting this clip. It's cool to see a comparison to the new 4 strokes. This kids a good rider and does a great job handling that big bike.. I had a 92 CR500 and though it had impressive power but it was a total pig to ride. [for me anyway] If he put some money into the suspension/brakes/and tweaked the motor a bit, who knows what would happen!?
Had a go on a cr500 30yrs ago, went everywhere in second gear and then gave it back, I was faster on a 125, respect to you!!
I've out ran 250s on 85s the smaller bikes will be faster bc you can throw em around it takes skill to toss around the bigger bikes

Mark Lowe 2 strokes will come back. Direct injection in modern day 2 strokes in boat engines is more efficient and pollutes less.

Thanks for posting! It was good to see a 500 back on the track. But coming from someone that raced 500's for years, your riding it like a 250. Shift up and use the meaty part of the mid range. Thanks where they pull the hardest, 500's are fairly flat on top. Again, thanks for posting.
I've always thought if the 500's would of kept on been produced with the technology today advancing so quickly in motor sports what a 500 on track would be like with all the launch control & gadgets the 450 4strokes have today, it's undeniable they would be unstoppable bikes if they had been produced & updated through out the years, lovely bikes & a engine class that has its own legacy in the industry.

Its nice to finally see someone really ride a CR500, instead of video after video of people just starting their bike and taking off. If your that fast on a CR500, you NEED to race a CR500AF!

Always loved the idle of those big bore 2 strokes. They vibrated horribly, I had a buddy that had one that was a beast but sheesh I couldn't stand riding it due to the vibration you got through the handlebars.
The 500cc class of the past was the most fun to watch. Back in the old camel days.

Love the sound of a 2 stroke in general but there's something about the deep sound of a 500.
First of all, very nice, funny and memorable video. Like you in this video I used to ride a 125cc Kawa 1986 '95, '98 '00 and a Yamaha 2002, now this time I still own a Yamaha 144cc powerfull and fun to race with :-)

When you start on a 2stroke 500 shift it into 3rd and hold it flat,it will chase anything down,and the meateast back tire it will fit,it will burn any 4stroker it's just a different riding style

Love to see him ride my old 83 model YZ 490 K. Was built for the Finke Desert Race back in 84. It makes a normal 490 feel slow.. believe it or not, its one of the smoothest bikes to ride with 14 inches of travel either end. Hasnt run for nearly thirty years, just sits in m shed. I also have a CR 480 that is shmiko. Even that feels slow in comparison. The most daunting thing about the Yz is the hieght of it, but when ya sit on her she sits just a couple of inches higher than standard. Its bitten and thrown off nearly every single person who ever rode it. Its like riding a 125 style motor but in 600 quantities. 120 mph piece of piss when she ran her desert gearing
Thanks for posting this clip. It's cool to see a comparison to the new 4 strokes. This kids a good rider and does a great job handling that big bike.. I had a 92 CR500 and though it had impressive power but it was a total pig to ride. [for me anyway] If he put some money into the suspension/brakes/and tweaked the motor a bit, who knows what would happen!?
