    It's time to revisit some Goosebumps stories once again! In this episode, we're looking back at The Girl Who Cried Monster and Welcome to Camp Nightmare. How do they stack up now that I'm a highly intelligent adult? And for the first time, did the TV episodes do a better job than the books?? Adult beware, you're in for a scare!

    Honestly, both Lucy and Mr Mortmon's actors were as solid as you can get for a Goosebumps series, also Lucy's dad just going "Don't you say hi, anymore?" and Lucy responding with a panicked "Hi dad, I just saw a monster!" got a laugh out of me. I also really liked Camp Nightmare with the performances from Billy and Uncle Al, the twist ending was really well done, too.

      In South Louisiana, parents in olden days sometimes suspected their children of eavesdropping on their conversations, when they ought to be in bed asleep.
      Mom & Dad would discuss the spooky tale of the Loup Garou (a Cajun werewolf). These child-devouring creatures would sneak into the homes and steal away bad boys & girls. The only trick that could effectively defeat the Loup Garou's hunt was to leave a collander or flour sifter outside one's front door. Monsters are notorious for their compulsion to count things.
      A Loup Garou would be stuck tallying the number of holes in the kitchen appliance. Once the sun started rising, the monster had to run back to its lair.
      Any parents who discovered a collander or flour sifter outside the front door would know that their kids were sneaking out of bed at night.

    I think the concept of the first one being an allegory for real child predators gives the ending a whole new meaning. She's being preyed upon by this external "monster" and eventually comes to realize that her parents were those kind of "monsters" too her whole life, and she just couldn't recognize it because it was also the only home she knew. Then we hear the parents say that she and her brother will be "monsters" too when they come of age shows that this kind of trauma can be passed down even through generations that do recognize it for what it is. I don't really think Stine did that intentionally, but it's interesting

    • @SympleSymon
      @SympleSymon 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +41

      I was disappointed in it for one reason, and it had nothing to do with the plot. It was that I was still in my slasher flick phase, and while the trailers all made it out to be the next huge thriller, it turned out to be real life horror, a lot of which I was struggling with at the time. If I could erase it and see it for the first time now, even though I haven't escaped most of it, I'm sure I'd be a lot more favourable towards the film. I think Mr. Stine pulled the Monster Reveal too soon in the first book, as you can see with him doing it again several times later.
    I think a psychological approach would've been cooler, like Lucy only suspecting Mr. Morkman of being a monster while repeatedly spying on him doing weirder and more unsavory things until the shoe finally drops and the real danger kicks in.
    Also I think the twist would've been so much better if Lucy and her brother didnt know their parents where monsters, like I imagine Mr. Morkman menacing the kids, threatening to eat them right before he's eaten in one bite by a giant monster that then goes "Don't worry, honey, it's me mom" and then the dad (still a human) comes in all nonchalant going "Sorry kids, your mom got hungry" or some other corny sitcom line like this.

      I kind of like it as a concept since I think it's a neater idea to look at on a repeat read. It recontextualizes all of the events in the story when you realise that Lucy is really plotting to murder Mortman. I also don't think it would've worked for them to not know their parents are monsters.
      Granted I do think the ending is really abrupt and could've been done better, and I would've preferred if Lucy tried and failed to get proof throughout the story.

      .... my bad, I must have missed the Village part the first time I watched this (I had to answer the door and the video kept running), but going back I see when you and John both meant now, and I agree, the actual "monsters" were very much real in the psychological sense. Again, I apologise

  • @iedamarcondes
    @iedamarcondes 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

    I'm a movie critic and your commentary on Camp Nightmare and how it relates to The Village is gold. We are supposed to read into things, because even though the author might have not intended certain subtext, we're all creatures being influenced by the culture around us and our creative choices can reflect certain aspects of said culture that we may not even be aware of at the time. D.H. Lawrence used to say "trust the tale, not the teller", so keep up the good work!

  • @ToonGal12
    @ToonGal12 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

    I think your suggestion of having the librarian turn out to be a nice monster would've been a far better twist. Like, he IS a supernatural creature, but as it turns out, he's the monster equivalent of a vegetarian and doesn't want to eat or hurt people, so he eats bugs and other stuff instead would've been more interesting. Or heck, even doing the cliché thing of having the whole thing turn out to be a misunderstanding, but then at the last second something hints at the librarian actually being a monster would've been better than what Stine came up with. :/
    Can't wait for you to cover the Ghost Next Door and the Haunted Mask----those two are easily the darkest and best ones in the series!

    I need to know what you think about the UK Goosebump covers! These gave me so much tactile satisfaction as a kid, they had literal 'bumps' on them and I just loved the feel of them growing up. Import just one to run a finger over it, I'd love to know your thoughts on the design choice. The images were different as well - maybe a US/UK front cover comparison and ranking at the end of the series as a bonus vid? I'm loving this series, thanks so much for all the great content x

      I deeply loathe the UK covers I’ve seen to be honest lol. Instead of a monster they usually have a smug kid face stuck in the middle of a bunch of goop? I don’t really get it. But it’s worth noting that the US covers also have the tactile bumps on the cover, and I also liked running my finger over them!

    I agree wholeheartedly about every piece of subtext you mentioned! The danger of a trusted adult taking advantage of a child, the horror of systemic toxic masculinity / misogyny. And that’s exactly what I took from these stories as a kid, even if not entirely consciously.
    Also, I LOVE the Village and always have. The twist was a formative moment for me as a child. Seriously one of my absolute favorites and, I’m sure, plays some part in why I try and think as critically about things as I do now. Thanks for an awesome video!

    This series of videos you’re doing is definitely tapping into a LOT of childhood nostalgia for me. I collected ALL of the original series run Goosebumps books and had seen just about every episode of the TV show when I was a kid. Though seen as extremely tame by today’s standards, I continue to believe that Goosebumps is good entry level horror with just the right balance of eeriness and humor for younger audiences to digest. I do hope you continue this video series, as the books truly got more and more bizarre and inventive as the series went on and the TV show did an admirable job at adapting them. ☺️

Though pro-tip if you want to be part of Booktube you have to insert some vlogs of you walking around using your phone as a camera while you're drinking tea or coffee. From what I recall you're right, Haunted Mask and Ghost Next Door are pretty good ones. There's still hits up through about 40 but the last stretch of books I recall being pretty bad.

    It feels like early on RL Stine was going for a tone closer to Series of Unfortunate Events, and how sometimes people would refer to completely nonsensical animals or hobbies or movies or the like to add a sort of more whimsical and light tone. Stuff like a one person frisbee and prairie cat just kinda feeling like that same sort of absurdity

    I LOVED the village in such an all encompassing way that only a kid can love something. I was like wow this was such an incredible twist with so many different layers and such a great nuanced main character, I was so impressed that ostensibly she was bought in and obedient, there was no like sassy girl who hates her entire way of life and knows it's bogus from the jump. I went in completely blind and was blown away and then the next movie he made was the happening, so.
