    I feel like the "colorblind" line is more saying "Don't let my color/race influence how you choose to treat me" not necessarily "ignore my race/identity altogether"

    • @SteadyNUnremitting
      @SteadyNUnremitting 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yeah, but you gotta remember, this song was from the early 90s, when the concept of being color blind was still evolving. Everyone who felt they weren't racist said that, Of course now it's a problematic phrase to say.

    • @4u2cre8
      @4u2cre8 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@SteadyNUnremitting I agree. "Evolution" is a good way of putting it. Back in the 90's the concept of being colorblind was still seen as a positive step in the right direction for those who were trying to be allies to non-white communities. Society has definitely evolved since then to have a fuller understanding why that phrase is problematic.

      Thats what it has always meant but people wanna make it seem like you dont see their identity cos they wanna make issues out of nothing. I dont see color means I wont judge you by your color.

      No he is correct and totally in ORDER . En Vogue is a group of black women who LOOK BLACK and who grew up in Amerikkka just like we did and so did whoever wrote the lyrics .....the words were more than likely written by someone Caucasian .....who in 1992 DEFINITELY wanted us to live in this kind of dystopian "color blind world" the only problem is ALOT of black children (like me) who grew up in the 1990s were indoctrinated to think and one major thing was the delusion of "color blindness" . I definitely fell in love with your personality MORE when I heard you articulate that you didn't believe "color blindness" .....the ONLY people allowed to be color blind at blind people . We live in a radicalized world that has created laws , systems and traditions BASED OFF OF SKIN COLOR which many times and STILL equals OTHER , less than and different . To NOT see color or race means you don't see acknowledge and empathize with my VERY different experience moving through the world as a black man

    This song became an anthem for so many black women (including myself). The fact that they recorded and released this in the '90s and it's still relevant today speaks VOLUMES of how important this song is. They did an amazing job at incorporating a rock sound to really portray the anger we have towards society for always oversexualizing us, it's quite brilliant.
    You NEED to react to En Vogue's 'Giving Him Something He Can Feel' it's easily one of their best!

    You always know just what's needed to be said at pointing out facts.I think black people are hated so much is the fact that we're so diverse.Our race is so distinct,exact and on point.We vary in so many shades of color,style,and so much more.We basically dominate in whatever we decide to get into and that's a threat to so many people of any race,color,creed.And hispanics,indians,are the same as far as beauty and talent and just our race in itself.I just needed to point out how our races are so amazing, powerful,and just to magnify the beauty's from all of us.Although we are all divided we still have to see and or know the importance of this not only today,but,in history.

    This was the third single off their second album, Funky Divas. In total they released 5 singles and all 5 could be categorized in different musical genres. Their version of the Beatles' "Yesterday" got a lot of radio play but it wasn't an official single. It's rare that a remake surpasses the original but this is up there with The Bangles' "hazy shade of winter," Whitney Houston's "I will always love you," SInead O'connor's "Nothing compares 2 U," and Meli'sa Morgan's "Do me baby" as among the best remakes of all time.
    I was disappointed that "free your mind" didn't do better than number 8 on the charts because I thought it was one of the more important songs of our lifetime. I was a closet chart junkie as a kid and would always hawk over the Sunday paper because they would reprint portions of the billboard charts on sundays. My parents didn't appreciate my love for music because in their view it was unbecoming for a man of my culture to have passion for anything that doesn't put food on the table. I later realized that it was a backwards way of driving home the importance of time valuation. Now, I'm spending my time during the pandemic season on youtube watching others react to music. I showed them! 🙌
    The opening line where Terry says "prejudice, wrote a song about..." was a riff from the 90's sketch comedy show In Living Color. The character Calhoun Tubbs would say the catchphrase "wrote a song about it, like to hear it, here it go" before singing. This shoutout led to them getting a guest spot on the show starring with Jamie Foxx in one of the funniest skits ever on any sketch comedy show: th-cam.com/video/RB7A7Yb-QNw/w-d-xo.html
    For an equally deep, comparatively similar song that tackles the subject of bullying, check out "Girl from the gutter" by ex Brownstone member, Kina.I think you will love it, it is ridiculously good.

    That’s what they’re saying in the lyric…color blind in the lyrics isn’t literal it’s figuratively stated to mean don’t judge or assume based on a person’s race, they’re not saying to ignore race when as you say, “you can obviously see race with two eyes”

    Colorblind was the goal of objectivity and inclusivity at the time and at the time it was the ideal. Colorblind was the pc attitude ideal of how to be. But the rest of the song holds up and in context it makes sense.

    Had to chuckle at 8:08: "it's real...like..funky?..." well, as their album is titled, they are 'funky divas'
    Keep doin ya thing kid! Entertaining to see a young one discover & appreciate some of what i.grew up on.

    I think a good one with a sort of similar message is Salt- N-Pepa None of Your Business. I heard that one of the members of the group hated the song and found it so anti-religious. I personally found the song very religious. You shouldn't judge anyone for silly reasons (yes for murder, rape, etc.). One of my favorite quotes from the bible is; Judge not lest ye be judged. Anyway, these songs came out within the same year I believe. Over 15 years later and we are still fighting all forms of prejudice. None is worse than racism but judiging people in general is terrible.

    You should do "Don't Go" (not to be confused with their other song "Don't Let Go (Love)", that you already did)
