Thank you! I'm not a woodworker or even a hobbyist; I'm just making one small table, and I had no idea what to finish with. I've looked at a few other videos, and this one was very helpful. 🤘
Thank you for this video. I appreciate it. I have a dining table leaf that was scratched up during a move. It probably is finished using lacquer. What would you suggest I do to get rid of those surface scratches?
I want to paint a design with acrylic paint onto a black board. I tried stain black first, but lost the vibrancy of the paint color. Next I painted the base with acrylic paint and have sprayed with a laquer.. If that doesn't work, I'll use heat transfer vinyl.. Any concerns about ironing on vinyl to a wood board coated with laquer? I'll use a barrier such as parchment paper or something . I didn't realize laquer was so toxic if spraying outdoors.
All I want to know is, can I spray lacquer over an oil based stain without hurting the stain? The stain is fully dried and cured. Can't seem to get a straight answer. Also, can water-based Polycrylic be used on an oil based stained surface?
We used polycrylic on a dining room table (featured in the film), but we used a ton of coats (8-10). 6 years in it is doing very well! So, I've been pleasantly pleased with its durability.
I appear to applied Minwax brushing lacquer too thick and unevenly. It’s not dry and it’s been over 12 hours. This is the second coat. Some places are drier but others are very tacky. I used a brush, not a sprayer. Should I try to remove the wet lacquer, Should I let it dry? It is a large table that we built yesterday. The table top is 32” x 6’. So it’s a lot to lacquer,
No, for several reasons. Polycrylic is water based so you don't want to put it on top of oil based finishes. And, lacquer is not oil based... its lacquer based.
Lacquer’s biggest enemy is moisture aka white rings from a glass, for a kitchen table go with water base poly. That being said, you cannot use water base poly on mahogany .It will turn the finish either pink or orange. I learned the hard way( it’s in the fine print on the can). Good luck.
Just don't recoat too soon. I used this stuff on my desk and it's not staying hard where I keep my arms. I think it's probably due to recoating too quickly.

If I cannot find the minwax polycrylic product in South Africa, what would I substitute with?
Minwax isn't important, just find any well reputed polycrylic
What would you recommend as a top coat for a wooden baseball bat?
Polyurethane or spar varnish

It is not recommended to use lacquer over oil-based stains - the solvents in lacquer canl dissolve the stain
@@SawsHub …Thank you, and thanks for the great videos! Much appreciated!
Hows the long term durability of the polycrlic? I am refinishing my dining room table and have kids and am concerned about durability.

@@SawsHub Did you sand between every coat or do you stop sanding between coats after 2 or 3 coats? Thanks again!

Patience! Let it dry!
Although, that seems totally uncharacteristic of lacquer. It should be dry by now.
Can you smell the laqour when its dry? Is it bad 4 you when its dry?
When you say not lightning fast what do you mean? A few hours?
Polycrylic dries a lot slower than lacquer, usually to touch in an hour or two, and fully dry within 24 hours.
Does one have an advantage over the other in protecting the wood from moisture from food and beverage. Condensation and humidity?
The table in the picture is our dining room table and it is polycrylic. I choose it over lacquer because it withstands food / beverage.

Does your table with the poly hold up to a hot cup of coffee?!

Polycrylic is a brand name, water based poly made by min wax.
