  • First impressions on the Elektron Syntakt! Had it for a week. Wanted to share the first experience with the Syntakt so far. Forgot to mention price in my discussion. Gonna reserve those thoughts for a future "review" video after some time has passed with it.

    for those that feel limited by the drum sounds and the macros, don't forget, sy tone and bits can be used to make nasty heavy drums with the filters. For example, crank the feedback and mod on a sy tone track, and adjust the filter and envelope for a fast decay, and you can get a huge variety of noisy unusual percussive sounds that you wouldn't expect from a "tone" track. Add in pitch and lfo variations and it can get crazy.

    The chords machine is 1 voice Fm that does some fancy behind the scenes stuff with precise programmed ratios creating a pseudo chord. It was brought over from the model cycles.

    • @diewahrheituberfakten4800
      @diewahrheituberfakten4800 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They could still program it to respond to 4 notes, that's all we want.

    • @BassSalat
      @BassSalat ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. You're wrong. To respond to four note you'd have to program a four voice (a full blown synth signal path for every note you play) VA synth. this would result in a higher dsp usage. dsp capacity is a limiting factor when building a digital synth. besides that, it would make the user interface a lot more complicated. when you have a 4 voice va synth people start asking for unison mode, arp etc, etc. so they ditched a functionality for a streamlined user experience and a less powerfull but cheaper dsp.

    • @diewahrheituberfakten4800
      @diewahrheituberfakten4800 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BassSalat I meant to enter the four note chord through the sequencer (all on one step) instead of on the parameter lock.

    • @Randuski
      @Randuski ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BassSalat the chord synth does have unison, x1 - x4. You turn the knob left of the chords and it gives you unison. Which is what kinda confused me. Cause the idea is it uses wave table, and freq modulation to create resonant peaks within the note to emulate chords. And you can hide or reveal them with the balance knob. But what is the unison in that case? Does it just also have more than one osc that activates in unison mode? What exactly is the difference between unison and polyphony? Haha

    The thing about Syntakt... it's just another groovebox with all the pros and cons (portability\menu diving etc.). In some areas it's better than others, in some - worse. Overall the same thing. I mean if you already have one (like Circuit or Electribe or whatever), just don't waste your time. If you never had one than yes, good place to start.

    A wish for Chord machine: Drop the a control (Punch?) and add a "strum" where you could go -64 (up/down) to 64 (down up). I miss adding some dynamics to the chord, it gets old quite fast.

    I was glad to see you review this device as I was planning on picking up th Syntakt this week. I like the Elektron sensibility with the Digitakt and Digitone and I figure this box might complement my set up. I'm a keyboard player as well and appreciate the tip to connect a keyboard. I am planning on using the three boxes just the way you suggested. Love your content. Peace and love.

    I think the chord machine is not using the equivalent of 4 MIDI notes. It’s a note plus settings to specify the “balance” and scale. Same reason there’s no “strum” as someone else requested.

    This machine is mono synth with 12 tracks of mono sounds. Chord engine again is mono engine that creates sound that sounds like chord.

    Great review. Not sure this would fit into my current workflow but I recently got a Digitakt and I'm still getting my head around it. Mostly intending it for sample and drum sequencing, but gonna try the MIDI functionality now too (got a ton of Korg Volcas to mess with)

    Am looking at this, as an upgrade from my Model:Cycles.
    Have grown to love the Elektron workflow, and am now wanting more features, like the Syntakt has.
    I find it to be more immediate, intuitive, and accessible than my MPC one.
    Will give my MPC another go, when the new firmware drops, later this month.
    Maybe I will start to get the hang of that then.

    If it can work in a class compliant audio mode it would be cool to see it paired with the mpc for multi tracking into the mpc.

    from implementation point of view it's huge difference between just chord oscillstor and between full blown 4 voice synth - it is significantly more demanding for CPU, you need run for each voice individual filter routine, drive routine (ovedrive is applied per voice).. basically 4x more CPU demand than current oscillator-only chord machine which is then passed throguh just one filter/overdive.. now imagine somebody would use such full blown 4 voice "machine on all 8 slots.. i guess there is not enough powerfull DSP inside to handle 8x4 = 32 voices

    Hey, thanks for the once again very good video....I really really like your music and the style of your videos! I know that there is a lot of work in it. Respect! About the Syntakt: as a happy owner of a Digitakt and a Digitone, I'm not really sure if the Syntakt wouldn't be obsolete in my combo... I haven't heard anything yet that I couldn't somehow manage with the two. Sure, the Syntakt might have some shortcuts...but the Digitakt is already powerful in bending samples, isn't it? In this respect, I'm really curious how you will use the three devices in a session. I'm already looking forward to it! ☺️

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I feel that the chord machine needs a lot of work, I am hoping that Elektron will give us more in that machine. The chords sound very samey, even modulating parameters does not provide a great divergence from those sounds. However, I love the rest of the machines :)

  • @somtamtim
    @somtamtim 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You probably can't do 4 notes as its 2 x osc + 2 x sub osc to make a chord using pitch offsets, instead of true independant 4 osc voiced part. I'm thinking this cause the A4 was the same if you wanted a chord on only 1 track.

  • @diewahrheituberfakten4800
    @diewahrheituberfakten4800 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You are right, to use chords like that is very clumsy and you can't really play them live (maybe with some very extensive midi scripts and an external keyboard). They should change it. Overall I think the original asking price is quite high (already 10% off from MSRP here in Germany, expecting it to go lower), for what the thing does. With some polyphony I would be more inclined towards it.

    I'm looking at getting a syntakt, by yeah, just looks like frankenstein job. I've got a rytm, a couple A4's, and a model cycles, so this wouldn't bring much new other than the new trig features. The chords are better than model cycles, but still not good enough.

    I think the "chord" is in fact a clever problem/limitation workaround. Each trigger can only record one single note, so using a combination of a root key + corresponding chord, allows you to play a chord with a single note. The Syntakt can technically do polyphony BUT he can't record it because each trigger only record one note at a time.

    Everyone of you gets to the Chord machine and casually skip it showing random sounds, then proceed to complaints and wishlist. Every TH-camr out there. So now I have watched all of the videos about Syntakt and I don’t have an idea about the Chord other than being “meh”.

    • @AcidAlex
      @AcidAlex 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AveMcree I think the chord machine is useful for creating dub techno style stabs, or programming in simple chord progressions using parameter locks, which is really all you could expect in a drum machine. Roland’s TR-8S doesn’t even let you live record monophonic lines, you need to use parameter locks. I think a lot of the reviewers are keyboard players so would rather play/record their own chords, but for that you can just hook up an external synth and use a MIDI machine.

    • @Septimius
      @Septimius 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like pads, so chords are a must for me. It's very, very cumbersome to have to manually change each trig to be the correct chord. I absolutely wish I could just play the correct notes and have it play the right wave table.

    What's amazing is that you can record analog sounds of Syntakt to Ableton via Overbridge. That's alone is cool
