Yes, I'd recommend Holbein Acryla Gouache, which is opaque with a matte finish. When it dries it seals and won't dissolve again. amzn.to/2Yg8nuv . You could also use gesso tinted with acrylic or even gouache.

True, he does! This scene however, is anything but mundane... I believe his paintings show that for most scenes he paints. It's not about what's in the scene.. It's the lights, darks and shadows, mixed with colour, that makes these scenes what they are. What makes this scene so special in a painting, in my opinion, is the quiet and peaceful nature of it.
I think the skeleton is a perfect beginning for someone who appreciates them so much! Beautiful painting, and I love the camera angle at the end of the video! Thank you for putting these together so creatively.
Your ability to make such a seemingly random, chaotic, abstract underpainting/base/block-in turn into such a realistic (or maybe "convincing" is a better word) finished painting never ceases to amaze me.
Wow, the color of the painting is just breathtaking... Much better than the original scene, I have to say. Love how you manage to incorporate so many different shades of snow into one painting. Just fascinated by your mastery of guache. It beguiled me in art school, but some of my classmates are world class masters.. When I watch and listened to the overall tonality of your plein air demonstrations, I'm struck how cool it would be to have one of these edited as the calm, beautiful moments the we enjoy at the end of CBS Sunday morning. I now work in the broadcast industry, and can see this as an oasis for the senses.
That's an intriguing idea, and we're having a quite a discussion about your suggestion, starting with checking out some of the CBS segments you're talking about. It's funny, but the act of painting seems so calm and serene when viewed from the outside. But inside my mind while it's happening, it's a crazy storm of doubt and decision-making. One thing is for sure, it's a form of heightened or altered consciousness, and I'm always intrigued with how to convey that in a video.

What a good plein air companion dog Smooth is. This is the time when I too like to get out back on our logging roads in the woods with my dogs but we are having a serious problem with coyotes here this year, packs coming down from the hills and onto our pastures with a single one even circling our house and barns so I worry my dogs will give chase and fight. We are upstate in Washington County and in the 40 yrs of being here have never had a problem with the packs being this bold but the deer herds are larger than ever so it makes sense the coyotes would also thrive. I had not planned on taking a rifle with me out back, kinduv defeats the idea of experiencing calm and serenity while painting, but the situation adds a new reality to Gouache in the Wild.
Thanks for explaining about the coyotes. Some of the horseback riders have seen a big coyote-wolf in the region I was painting, and I saw some coyote poop. Smooth seemed a little nervous--he didn't go far away from me like he usually does. I assume a coyote would be shy and avoid trouble, so I wasn't worried, but who know?
James Gurney coyotes who get used to human scent are not shy and they can sneak up and attack prey with surprising stealth. I am wondering if bear spray would work on them. Wolf coyote hybrid would be very unusual, but coyote crossed at some point with a large dog is more likely but any canine with some measure of wild genetics no matter how many generations back cannot be trusted to behave like a domestic dog which is why they are banned in NY unless a person has a permit for exotic animal ownership (and some municipalities still ban them). The coyotes around here are very large and healthy looking from their diet of deer, farm animals, and any other creature they locate, not at all like the scrawny ones that live around cities and the suburbs. Feral pigs are also becoming a dangerous problem but so far they remain in your area and not this far north. That started with a farm release of pigs years ago and they have thrived. they are aggressive and destructive (wonder if bear spray works on them).
You captured that illuminated part perfectly. One can see all colours of the rainbow in there, as if the light was broken by the snow's crystals. Beautiful work!

Hey James, I want to start painting gouache en plein air. However, I’ve been having some trouble with the colors. I have experience oil painting, but all these gouache colors confuses me. There’s like 3 different types of reds such as “Spectrum Red, Primary Red, and Designer Red”, yet they all look like the same hue. Perhaps they have varying opacities? Could you discuss this topic someday? I plan on just buying Red, Blue, and Yellow with White and Black, and a few Earth Tones. I also plan on building the painting setup you discussed on your blog.
Hi, Preston, I would suggest avoiding gouache colors with descriptive names like "spectrum red," and instead stick with ones with well-known pigments, such as cadmium red. Sometimes an expensive pigment, such as cerulean blue, is replaced with cheaper pigments that match the hue, but they often don't have the opacity. But you don't need to start with the most expensive pigments. With ultramarine blue, yellow ochre, and terra rosa, you can paint most things in nature. Today I tried toning my paper with acrylic color and then let dry, but then as I painted with my gouache it just kinda soaked the color away even as I layered it and used plenty of white. Does it only work with acrylic-gouache and gesso?
If the surface of the priming is too absorbent you could seal it with acrylic matte medium, but just be sure not to make it too shiny. Also, keep the priming color very thin. Keep experimenting until you get something that works.
@@JamesGurney I did thin the acrylic with water but didn't want to over-do it, maybe that's part of the problem. Good idea about sealing it with acrylic matte medium, I will try these ideas thank you!

I like acrylic, oil, and watercolor, too, but for this one I wanted to be able to overlaps light over dark and dark over light.

If you live near nature/ trail areas random animal skeletons are kinda common. I see them so often I started to paint them.
