Being a kid growing up watching Triple h and the Rock on Monday nights. Undertaker and Kane. Stone cold and Goldberg. Dudley Boyz and Hardy boys on smackdown. These were the good old wwe days. If we can only go back and realize these days won't last forever and now they are some of the greatest memories we had.
Even in Algeria we enjoyed wwe massively! And watched it religiously whilst trying to imitate their moves... These days are not gonna repeat themselves because as H said today’s kids are different (1. Because they’re a bit softer. 2. Because of the tremendous amount of content available a click away...)
So glad I was able to come up when internet wasn’t mainstream

88-92 and late 97 to 2002
That 2007-2008-2009 Era with Undertaker, Kane, Cena, Rey Mysterio, Jeff Hard, Big Show, Great Khali, Umaga, Randy Orton, Edge was so legendary. This Era made me love WWE and I'm from Brazil, I'm happy I saw the best Era.

The music is the single worst part of WWE now. It's all so stale and forgettable. The theme songs change all the time, a lot of them because they cheaped out over contract disputes. Jim Johnston was easily a top 10 most important figure of the Attitude Era, so it's crazy that WWE really doesn't respect music right now

I remember watching the attitude era growing up and being invested in the undertaker vs kane storyline and tuning in every Monday to see what Paul bearer was talking about when he said undertaker had a brother and he was still alive man thay shocked me when I heard that and was hooked
Man, I literally came to write this exact comment, almost verbatim. Austin Vs McMahon, Bret, and Shawn (very early attitude/ transition) and HHH being just about the best heal in any program he worked. The stories were fantastic and had such a cultural impact on any child/teen that grew up in that era of wrestling.

98-03 was its peak as a real young kid. It was way more popular among other people too. We’d always have small parties with the ppv’s back in the day. 2004-2007 had a great roster too, then my interest fell off.

They took over in ratings in 1998, but 1997 was actually the best year of Raw ever IMHO, I feel bad for the people that hadn't switched over from Nitro yet because of the hot NWO angle from '96 that was already worn out.
I'd say attitude era had the craziest engaging story lines but ruthless aggression had a great mix of OG wrestlers on the back 9 and young upcoming guys with great charisma.

@@nathanrose3523 Yes it certainly does. Vince was at his best during the 00's. You had hbk returning in 02' along with all the other debuts of wrestlers such as batista, randy orton, john cena and brock lesnar. You also had most of the talent from ecw and wcw go over to smackdown or raw as well

I think Triple H was right about the stories bring you in. But the part missing today is there are no good characters, no one today that is captivating today like my era of Hogan, Piper, Macho Man, Bret Hart, HBK, Rock, Stone Cold, or Triple H. I feel like the wrestlers of today may be more talented than ever but lack the charisma. WWE has failed to create a superstar post John Cena that people truly care about.
I haven’t listened to this episode and maybe he mentioned it but I would love to hear his take on how social media impacts the business today. Much like with artists and actors there is a level of mysticism that’s been removed because of social media and how accessible people are.
They are lazy now and aren't willing to put the work in to get people over like they did in those days. They could have guys just as popular as Hogan, Rock, Stone cold. But that requires week to week ass busting work. They would rather pander to their global investors, keep the product stale and neutral.
The problem is everyone is generic. They criticize the gimmicks from especially the early 90s but you remembered those wrestlers. Only certain wrestlers can just use their name or a regular name. Most need a gimmick to make people care for them. Mark Calaway wouldn’t have gotten over without The Undertaker gimmick. Everyone know is just a bland wrestler with a computer generated name. Very few guys have a unique name or gimmick on the current roster that would excite the imagination. It’s just first name/last name wrestler brah.
Let's see if things change now that Vince isn't involved. I respect what he did for pro-wrestling, but he stayed in charge for far too long and was totally out of touch with the audience. Let's see if Triple H can find a way to bring things back now that he's the head of creative.
Cuz they buried everyone under Roman Reigns and bring back big names that wrestle 3 times a year that are way past their primes like Brock and Goldberg instead of build up more talent which they actually have

If this is Triple H’s mentality on the industry moving forward, I think the WWE is in very capable hands. It’s the story telling. Growing up him and Taker were my favorite wrestlers.
Triple H makes an excellent point. The WWF during the Attitude era was basically a soap opera...excellent story telling with excellent characters.
Being born in the 90's WWE from 2000 - 2010 is the best era. I watched my DVD from Wrestlemania 21 countless times. Undertaker, Rey Misterio, Batista, and so on .. They were all there.

Storytelling is the number one driving tool that combat sports need to adopt to make their events successful. The match itself is almost irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. It's the buildup and the emotional rollercoaster throughout that captivates people into paying attention.
Being unique & charismatic both physically & vocally(mic skills) go a long way. Ufc doesn't need manufactured fake storylines.

That's why folks like Ali and McGregor were so big. They sold themselves in a promo style that was very similar to the WWE. They brought in folks who otherwise never would have been interested.

The Golden Era is definitely the best. Hogan, Macho Man, Andre, Perfect, Jake The Snake, Rick Rude, Demolition, Hart Foundation, Warrior and so on. Can’t be touched
This... I was a kid during the golden era, so in theory I was the perfect age for the attitude era, but I was mostly turned off by how extreme it was
I loved all the wrestlers, like roster was obviously super deep, but it just seemed like there was no balance and it was just a never ending stream of shock tv

Definitely the Attitude Era for me. I didn't grow up watching during that time but going back to watch these eras singled out the Attitude Era as being the absolute best, especially when WCW was doing so well just before hand. 1996-2001 were the best years in professional wrestling.
Me neither I'm an early 2000's kid but I loved the Attitude Era cause guys were allowed to be themselves and the Storylines were great but I also loved The Ruthless Aggression Era it had better Wrestling and Booking and I loved watching Smackdown
That's what having good competition does for companies. It forces everybody from all companies to step up their game to try and outdo one another. I know most people don't consider AEW as competition for WWE, but I'm willing to bet that it's directly related to AEW being TV-14 that led to WWE going back to the TV-14 rating as well.
I’m glad you’ve gone back and watched them. I was fortunate enough to tune in live to Raw is War and Smackdown back then and it was wrestling to perfection. The story lines were hard hitting and the talent was through the roof!

I mostly agree, but there’s one other era that beats the attitude era, and that’s nxt from 2014-2020
I can't imagine how tired HHH is of hearing we need to bring back the attitude era. It was a moment in time. HHH is right. There were no streaming services, youtube, twitch, etc. There is so much content, and so many sources for it now. I was a wcw guy, but enjoyed that those two companies and shows were doing everything they could to beat each other.

I will admit I was completely unsold and shaking my head when Logan first showed up in WWE. Ive never done a bigger 180 except for maybe with Sasha Banks as far as respect and being a fan is concerned. I'm 100% behind him and pulling for him

Same here. Only I wasn't just "unsold". I was ready to hate the guy. He convinced me in his first match w/ The Miz. He was a GREAT fucking heel, and he looked legit in the ring. But man, that 2nd match. And that insane frog splash. That was a thing of beauty. Now, I can't wait to see more Logan Paul!
I agree the story is important but the action and the over the topness makes it perfect. Steven pulling up with the beer truck and giving his boss the fuck you was why so many people loved Austin and Vince together. Everyone wants to tell their boss off and Austin did it in a crazy over the too action
I watched 01-09 and I absolutely loved the ruthless aggression era , I can only imagine how great the attitude era was. Super bummed I missed out on the Monday night wars as I was a newborn , but man it must have been cool having wrestling so mainstream like the big sports leagues

I can tell you it was an incredible era. You'll never get those days back. I was early-mid teens at the time. Never to be forgotten!
Ah man it was awesome. You know when you see a pretty girl? Then you see a girl who is way better? It was like that. Attitude era was just another level. You would wait for the episodes every week, and have the channel on, just waiting 15 minutes before it would even air. You never wanted to miss anything. It was the PEAK of wrestling
I was a teenager during the attitude era. It was wild flipping back and forth between nitro and raw. Greatest era of wrestling.
In my opinion Ruthless Era was the more cohesive in terms of quality, but what made Attitude era so great were the provocative storylines.
In particular the storytelling of matches was so much better back then. It’s like nowadays it’s all about just doing some athletic looking move cuz it looks cool but doesn’t mean anything or get the crowd into it or someone hits a finisher two minutes in and covers the guy immediately and uk he’s kicking out that’s def a big issue is the diminishing of finishers
Yes. Watch the Rock vs Ric Flair and it's leagues better than matches today because of the in ring storytelling.
i remember as a kid, when they all tried to lift Yokozuna, and my favorite wrestler was Tatanka, he almost did it. But then came Lex Luger and throw Yokozuna on the ground. That for me was the moment which i will always remember. 1992-1995 was the best WWE era ever for me.
It was so much better when I was younger. I remember 2002-2007ish the most but objectively speaking the best era was probably 98-05'. After that it started going down hill. I think it started getting a little too PG and aimed mainly towards younger kids. I think around that time they started losing the teenage and adult audience

The Ministry of Darkness, Corporate Ministry, Vince McMahon and Steve Austin stories were 5 star quality, that was great.... like i loved the stories with Ultimate Warrior, Hogan and Macho Man in the 80s and early 90s.
I do agree with Triple H it is all about a great storyteller and I’ve watched WWF during the attitude era and ruthless aggression I tell ya as a kid when I watched it and seeing Stone Cold Steve Austin do some off the wall shit he did it made it so believable and like Undertaker and Kane they were so scary I couldn’t sleep because that’s how much dedication they put into their character and even Triple H always being that badass you hated but at the same time loved because he set the bar for being a villain! And the list goes on and on! Those eras will always be monumental throughout WWE history for me

I grew up in the ruthless aggression era when Brock and Goldberg were the main guys of the company and Cena was a badass thug rapper. But I have to admit. attitude era is the most exciting thing I've ever seen on TV. Better than my favourite movies better than any thing on TV. The characters are so cool and very iconic. The storylines are so funny, cartoonish, bizarre, shocking and badass. Attitude era was the best TV show I've ever seen.

@@alphonsemaina8293 it was the most exciting era, the crowds were electric and that same electricity carried over into the storylines and backstage segments. Around 2002ish crowds started dying because a lot of the exhilarating stories and characters people were invested in started to end. Even the backstage segments switched from a “follow the action to the back” kinda presentation to a more “skit” style with bad acting.
My childhood is the mid 90s the Monday night wars the attitude era that will always hold a place in my heart for life
It's the story and the connection to the character. Kids saw superman when hogan was out there. Teenagers and working class guys saw their dad's or friends with Austin.
I'm 22 now, I've been watching Logan since I was 14 and WWE since I was 6, to see both kinda world's collide with eachother is amazing to see, it used to be Internet Vs media but now it's internet & media to bring us the best of the best
It's cool because they've always mashed up with pop culture. Cyndi Lauper at Wrestlemania mixed wrestling/mtv. Lawrence Taylor match at WM was NFL/WWF. Mike Tyson with DX and Austin was boxing/wrestling. Tough Enough mixed wrestling with reality TV. Divas searches mixed Playboy/WWE. Tribute to the Troops military & wrestling. WWF the Music albums, WWE movie studio

When it came to the main event storylines in the 90s, the violence had a purpose. Taker threw Mankind off the cell because they had done EVERYTHING else to each other. These two men had been to war and that hell in a cell was the ultimate culimination. Same thing with Foley and HHH, Rock and Foley,, Rock and HHH. Rock and HHH often had those slugfest matches that went all the around but that was due to where the story took it.
What HHH said is absolutely true !! I just watched a martial arts documentary about the fighting/action N the best rated movies n scenes were where there was hundreds of punches thrown n like 5 landed hits vs the worst rated movies where it's just over the top action every hit lands they beating tf out of each other ...less is more fr fr
The 90s start from the end of the golden era into the cartoon era then the attitude era to watch how much it changes in just 10yrs is unbelievable

This was a good conversation. Triple H is dead on about the power of storytelling. High hopes for his version of WWE, but nothing will ever top the Attitude Era.

my most memorable wwe story was the john cena vs edge feud.. everything about that feud was perfect
I’m disappointed to hear HHH downplay the impact of the crazy elements of old wrestling … The story was told from those crazy things happening. WWE is boring these days because nothing crazy or interesting happens.
Saying nothing crazy or interesting happens is flat-out hyperbole. Just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean it’s not eccentric or original. Have you ever seen someone in the attitude era tip the ring over with a tractor? Nope.

Id say 02-05 was best all-around talent they had, 06-09 that rosters took a big hit.
They had a bunch of new guys and a diva division no one gave a 2 hoots about. You had Taker, Edge, H, Cena, Orton, Jericho, Batista, and Shawn getting used for everything because that's all the star power they had left.

For me as of December 2023: 1. The Attitude Era 2. The PG Era 3. Current post-COVID era 4. The Golden Age Era & Ric Flair in the 1980s (NWA/WCW). The current era has the potential of climbing up the list.
Triple H is hopefully going to bring back these great stories to tell in the ring now that he’s in charge of Creative.

The Hogan era for me. I was a kid and was absolutely fascinated by the magic of the WWF. After Hogan became a bad guy, it was over for me.

I was born in 00’ so I was there for the end of the attitude era before the ruthless aggression era. I think the best was the war days for WWF. I love the 98-04 era 05-08 wasn’t bad but the best promos, matches and divas moments was from 98-04

The Attitude era is so special, I dont think any other era will surpass it. Its like Wrestling equivalent of the Golden Age of Cinema imo. Having WWE and WCW dominate the mainstream was something we had never seen with pro wrestling.

The WWF 1984-1992 was the greatest era! Being a kid then and having heroes like Hogan,Macho Man and Warrior, we were lucky.
For me the rutheless aggression era is the best (I am biased) growing up and seeing Triple H,Shawn Michaels,The Undertaker,Eddie at their peak as well as Jericho Edge Cena Batista the Hardy Boyz Orton Mysterio. That era had it all.

I know it probably wasn't really as good as the attitude era but it was my childhood and was the perfect balance of in ring clasics and laid back creative culminating in controversial and emotional storylines. PERFECT
once Hogan came on the scene that's when I started watching WWF as it was known back then.My Dad was the biggest wrestling fan so any matches I watched initially were because of him,and we'd dabble in WCW as well,especially in the late 80's early 90's. So much talent in both camps back then.After the attitude era my interest waned,also Dad had passed by then so I couldn't really watch it without thinking of him all the time and bumming myself out.
My personal favorite is the late 80's Rock N Wrestling era..
Attitude/Monday Night Wars is a tight second.
What he's saying makes sense. It was definitely boosted by the storytelling. The rivalries, like Stone Cold vs Vince McMahon for example, had us shouting and laughing every week. We still remember Stone Cold hitting Vince over the head with a bedpan decades later. 😂

Jaws is my favorite movie of all-time and the fact that HHH used that for reference in a lot of this clip makes me very happy. 🦈

Attitude Era and Ruthless Aggression Era
I caught the tail end of the attitude era and was a kid and teen during ruthless aggression. Took it for granted watching Raw and Smackdown every week.

My favorite is the attitude era because that’s what I grew up on but I’m sure people that grew up in different times would say the same.

i remember H and Taker standing in the ring staring at each other eye to eye for like 5 minutes straight. crowd chanting all kinds of stuff. H then points to the wrestlemaina sign - then crowd went ballistic. then raw went off the air. not even word was said and just one action suddenly you had to watch maina.
Another big struggle for wwe is simply ufc or mma fights on t.v. back in the day as a kid we only had this on t.v. and couldn't wait to see the next. That and most of the original legends leaving the gen just doesn't come close
I'll agree about that. If you have a UFC PPV and a WWE PPV on the same weekend where the UFC has a huge main event and you don't know how its going to end because its real life its hard to get invested in the 3rd match in a row of 2 wrestlers going at it on PPV.
@@joemckim1183 facts. I don't even mean to knock wrestling but watching 2 guys legit fight vs scripting it's just hard not to pick ufc over it ya know. Nothing will beat them WCW nitro or old Era but nowadays it's just not the same.

You had guys like Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, Quinton Jackson, Georges St. Pierre, Forrest Griffin, Matt Hughes all still competing. Watching John Cena vs. Randy Orton in their 10th PPV match just didn't do it anymore.
@@joemckim1183 yes the new or even repeat story lines run dry. I loved the hardy boy dudley Era. The Kane n undertaker. NWO. mysterio in his prime. He'll I remember cenad debut match lol. Maybe alot is growing up and not being fascinating as it was as a kid but alot of it is the wrestlers just aren't the same. It's sad. Just glad I was there for the best of it.

That was a Golden Era of Wrestling, fed by WCW, and ECW, and their demise.
I don't even think it has to do with talent there was just a relatability to the superstars in the 90s to the early 2000s everyone had a favorite that they felt connected to there is none of that now its almost like every superstar is there to develop someone else instead of being an individual.

I'd have to say Attitude with Ruthless being a very close second. Obviously the PG era made them alot of money but it was the start of their creative drought.
I feel for HHH. I grew up in the Attitude era and the world was just loving it. Nowadays everybody just looks for reasons to hate everything. Less social media really helped the business back then. Thank goodness a lot of these fans weren't around to ruin the Monday Night Wars. Peacock doesn't even do justice to the times back then because it doesn't really capture hos different the world was. It was just badass lol. The commercial, the favs, the atmosphere and the tension was just different lol. It's gonna be hard to recreate something that special.

@@zenelo3469 I would still say social has been problematic. It's hard to keep surprises. Unless you bought dirt sheets or magazines you didn't really know what was going on. I never knew HHH's real name even as a 15 year old. That wouldn't fly today. I didn't know when a wrestler failed a drug test and was suspended. I only knew the storyline reasoning. Wouldn't fly today. Social media has damaged kefabe.
Damn Hunter made sense - the matches, promos, cut scenes, etc we remember the most aren’t the bloody ones. It’s the regular ones that had story leading up to them that we still remember. One example is why many don’t like John Wick or won’t watch it after one time. Too much.
The only issue I see with WWE right now is that they save the unpredictable nature for the PPV’s.
Other than someone’s return/debut, there aren’t many surprises on TV. Just a quick heel/face/attack to start a feud. Then it’s just talking about the PPV.
I don’t care at all what happens on Raw or Smackdown. I just wait for the PPV.
Quality of PPV matches never really dipped. But the company grew because the tv audience grew

@@robertapolloni83 the internet and social media wasn't what it was compared to now is what you're thinking. The entertainment value in the attitude era was top notch though. Listening to the Rock call Kelly a hermaphrodite was hilarious among many other tropes. The wwe got watered down eventually.
There was 2 attitude era’s the stuff people remember like stone cold, hhh, the rock, undertaker, Kane all that top tier stuff. That’s what everyone talks about that’s what everyone remembers. Then there was all the stuff no one talks about or remembers. Like Marlena being knocked off the ring and “having a miscarriage” or mark Henry getting may young pregnant and she gives birth to a hand. The reality is 80% of the attitude era was shock value garbage that did nothing and added nothing. Then 20% was just awesome pro wrestling with amazing athletes. If you think that other 80% was any good then go watch aew. They produce that stuff now and no one cares.

Not a huge wwe fan, I respect and love what they do just never got into it myself, personally. But Triple H said is absolutely true. I’ll watch some of the wwe sometimes but what makes you stay is the story. We forgive a lot of things if the story is great. Story makes everything. We all love the visuals and everything but there there’s a great story it really captures you to the point you can ignore the flaws and claim it as a goat.
Man Tripps is so right about when he said along the lines of you didn't have alot of options during that time in the 90s.Every Monday night at 9pm I would drive to my Gmas house just to watch Raw,then switch over to Nitro here and there.Great memories

97-02 FOR ME was the glory days of wwf I remember having to video tape raw episodes cuz I couldn't stay up till 11 cuz it was a school night and watching it the next day as soon as I got home from school haha man good times
‘87-‘07. Best years as a whole. We got Hogan, Andre, Warrior, Macho Man, Bret, HBK, Austin, Rock, Brock, Cena, Orton, Batista, and so many others all in those years. Nothing tops that.

With Triple H in charge, I absolutely would love to see him create an era that's a mixed between the Ruthless Aggression Era, The New Generation Era & the NXT Era. Build the company around younger talent like Johnny Gargano & Riddle. Gargano & Riddle could be this generation's Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels rivalry.
I dont keep up week to week and havent for awhile. And half the ppv but i went to my first live show couple weeks ago and its a great time.
What Triple H has said about waiting is something he was a master of. He was so good at staying silent and expressing the unbelievable hatred he felt for his opponents for seconds that lasted a lifetime before attacking. That's something you don't improvise. You just get it. The psychology aspect. How to get people involved. You must believe it yourself
