@@HappyHungryHibby ah yes we have tried the banana skin “pulled pork”. Bryan liked it but I couldn’t eat very much of it without it upsetting my stomach. I mixed it with peppers and some other veg and that helped it out but it’s definitely a cool one
That's a great one, I've been using pineapple discards this way for a couple of years; using plain water, later adding to drinks and as a water bread making replacement. Can also do this with orange peels and apple cores. As for watermelon rind either make fermented pickles or juice up the whole thing after using a potato peeler to remove the tough outer-green skin.
Oh that’s a great idea to just use it as a replacement for water in bread recipes. A little bit of extra flavour. Even cooking rice in it would probably be delicious! I’ve used watermelon rind for jam and it’s delicious! I usually mix it with strawberries or apples for a bit more flavour. These are all great ideas 👍🏻
Lovely recipe but better health benefits is to ferment the skins with all the ingredients you mentioned for 24 hrs or so. This way you don't destroy the enzymes from the fruit. Tastes delicious too. Thanks for the recipe ☺️
I don't boil the cores. I puree them in a blender and squeeze out the juice. I add this juice to the pineapple skin tea. It is said that the bromelin get destroyed while heating. So this way atleast the bromeline the core remains intact.
Absolutely loved this! I’ve actually covered a recipe for using pineapple or banana skin to make Tepache, which is a fermented Mexican drink, it’s absolutely amazing and becomes alcoholic! This is a great idea too. Superb presentation, as always Kathryn, loved it. Always very entertaining. Keep up the great work. James
@@HappyHungryHibby haha well I’m sure it will happen! I’m excited to experiment with kefir after watching that video of yours. My summer is just so busy that I’ve slotted that experimentation into the fall 🤣
Yes it actually seems that pineapple hibiscus tea is quite popular and both ingredients have health benefits. I can’t find any indication that the two ingredients are harmful together. From pineapple hibiscus tea recipes it seems like you can boil the pineapple for 10 minutes on its own and then add the hibiscus. Let me know if you try it!
Another liquid sweetener like agave would work nicely. If you eat honey then that is another option. You can also use a granulated sugar because it will dissolve in the hot liquid. Cane sugar or even coconut sugar could be nice! If using a granulated sugar I would decrease the amount personally (maybe 1.5 tsp instead of 1 tbsp) but you can taste it and sweeten it more if you prefer!
Definitely! I have a recipe for turning watermelon rind into a fruit sauce. I'll link it here for you. I don't have a video for it yet but you can find the directions here (tastythriftytimely.com/favourite-easy-fruit-sauce-watermelon-rind/). I'll try and create some more!
It’s possible that the tea can reduce inflammation, benefit digestion, and aid your immune system. Boiling the pineapple skin does reduce the amount of vitamins that are naturally in the peel but adding in the ginger and turmeric adds additional anti-inflammatory benefits etc. I have seen recipes for juices made with the raw pineapple skin. Those perhaps keep the extra vitamin c etc more in tact but I really like the taste of this tea and find it to be a great way to use up waste and get some potential health benefits.
You going to try to grow pineapple from the top? I've seen videos on that but I've inherited the family "black thumb" we can kill even plastic plants. LOL!
The outer green skin tends to contain more potential contaminants so I prefer to remove that most outer layer. It can be used, I just recommend washing it well and buying an organic pineapple if possible just to try and limit any pesticides etc.
What other low waste recipes do you want to see?

@@TastyThriftyTimely I've heard of using banana peels to make pulled pork, but haven't been brave enough to try.

I had a pineapple looking at me, so I am trying it now with the spices I have on hand. I think this will be good. Thanks for the idea!
Oh great! Let me know how you like it!
The B-rolls look amazing! Pineapple never looked tastier. 😋
Thank you!! My husband does the photography and camera work so I’ll let him know 😉 Fresh pineapple is the tastiest!! 😋

Yes! Is that tepache? Some other commenters have told me about it. I definitely need to try that next time!

Awesome thank you! I’ve blended the cores and added them to juices and smoothies but great idea to add that to the tea once it has cooled 👏

I noticed the “green” part of the skin was not used. Why?
