  • Also known as the "The Maid Freed From The Gallows" or "Gallows Pole", I first heard this particular tune & set of lyrics by Nic Jones, though there are many variations from Lead Belly to Led Zeppelin and more.
    "Hangman, stay your hand.
Won't you stay it for a while?
I think I see my Father coming,
And he's all on yonder stile."
"Father did you bring me gold,
Or silver to pay my fee?
Or have you come to set me from hanging
    On the gallows tree?"
"No I didn't bring you gold,
Or silver to pay your fee,
But I have come to see you hanging
    On the gallows tree."
    Oh the prickly bush,
You prick my heart full sore,
And if ever I get out of that prickly bush,
I'll never get in it anymore.
[Repeat first verses for mother, brother, sister, however much time you have]
    "Hangman, stay your hand.
Won't you stay it for a while?
I think I see my true love coming,
And she's all on yonder stile."
"True love did you bring me gold,
Or silver to pay my fee?
Or have you come to see me hanging
    On the gallows tree?"
    "Yes, I've brought you gold,
And silver to pay your fee,
And I have come to set you from hanging
    On the gallows tree."
