There is no way Endo-sensei could pour so much effort into Spy x Family from its artwork, to its writing, to its comedy, and so on if he wasn't attached to his characters. The love you have for your characters is what fuels your passion for your creation, Endo-sensei's passion shines through every single one of his panels.

People tend to mistake that just because Endo isn't "passionate" about SpyxFamily, he somehow hates it or whatever. I'm sure he's happy it's crazy popular and well-received, but as a creator, I'm sure he feels a tinge of resentment. "Out of all of my works, THIS is the one that's the most successful."
It reminds me of a way about Akira Hiramoto
of Agonashi Monogatari and Prison School fame. He also made a manga called Me and the Devil Blues, based upon the song of the same name by blues legend Robert Johnson. I'd say it's easily his best work and every single chapter of it oozes his passion for blues music and the medium of creation. And yet he's arguably most famous for some pervert school comedy. Following Hiramoto, you can even see a bit of resentment in said last arc of Prison School, even if he still liked what he created overall.
Sometimes the thing you resonate the most with won't resonate with others, but bills have to be paid after all and eventually, you have to make what the people want.

Some people actively dislike the things they became famous for. Although it doesn't quite seem like it 100% here with SpyxFamily, I personally am starting to think this is the road he'll go down...

I rather remember hearing that he didn’t intend for Spy X Family to get so big. It was simply an exercise, like say, many fan fiction’s amateur writers to.
He took a bunch of cliches and half heartedly started the story. He was honestly extremely surprised when it took off (which is why bits like Loid’s backstory is so late in the manga, or how Anya’s life Pre-Loid haven’t really been explained) since he had been in a rut before hand.

  • @lenleon3699

People take the author’s interview the wrong way, they merely expressed disappointment because his passion project was panned and discarded while the side project he made as an easy to write manga ended up being the popular one.
It is not an uncommon story either and many manga writers have to cope with this and just roll with the hand they get.
Basically, Spy X Family is not the project he was passionate about so it shocked him when that became his only popular project. He does not hates it but it does create a sort of odd feeling for a writer.

  • @MenrvaS
    @MenrvaS ปีที่แล้ว +4645

If you read the whole interview, you will see that his friends and people who know him personally were all worried about him being too particular because he doesn't like to draw an ikemen aka handsome man. They also added that if he was the same, he would draw an old geezer instead.
His friends were clapping during their answers because Endo-sensei finally came out of his shell and created Loid Forger, an ikemen.
Thats when Endo-sensei told them that he doesn't feel attach to the character due to having to give up in some way and laughed.
In another interview, Endo-sensei also said that all the cute words from Anya was from Anya in his head speaking to him.

@@MyouKyuubi There's a lot wrong with the series.
      1. Annoying/forgettable/otherwise unlikeable characters
      2. Less substantive narrative/character developmental progress than even Rent-A-Girlfriend
      3. No plans of a final arc/conclusion as of this typing unlike other contemporary series
      4. Repetitive/formulaic
      5. Status quo stagnation
      6. Wastes an interesting premise
      7. Plays things far too safe and inoffensive, pandering to very young kids and Moral Guardian parents
Mission: Yozakura Family actually has a clear narrative direction, its characters actually grow and develop over time, and takes itself far more seriously with a much darker tone and more emotional beats, oriented towards more mature audiences. That anime will start in April, but pick up the manga and drop SxF. You won't regret it. I hope the anime becomes the SxF killer.
PS: I'm not _entirely_ soulless. I literally _cried_ when I saw Ai die in Oshi no Ko, what I now consider to be the best anime/manga, even overthrowing JoJo's Bizarre Adventure for that honor.

It is internal conflict for most writers if we get too attached to the characters we created.

Tbf, her character is all about being cute, which is one dimensional and can get boring over time.

A writer hating their characters? That’s rare. I, myself, can’t bring myself to hate any of my characters, I might not like their actions, I might be disappointed with them, but I still love them. (Please note I am using myself but George R.R. Martin was asked this question about Theon)

Most successful artist, writers, and creators dislike thier most popular creation. It's because they make one for themselves, hoping we will like it, and they make one for the fans, which we typically like. Then the creator gets mad because we don't like thier favorite one. It happens all the time.

Every time I see this article pop up all I can think is "For someone who hates Anya he sure does give her a lot of good things like two loving adoptive parents, a dog that would kill for her, and a life where she's give more love than most people ever get... Are these people reading/watching the same thing as me because no one hates a character who would be this kind to them"

He doesn’t hate the character but sometimes even authors find their own characters annoying but he had to write the story, so it is a pain

There’s many author who hates their own creations, most likely due to the fact that they’re essential in continuing the storytelling!
