Oh man that story of being denied The Living Years is crushing. I love Mike Rutherford, and I know there are a ton of legal entities and rules that determine what people can do, but Carrack's voice on that song just crushes me every time. I can't imagine he not being given permission to include it on his own compilation. That really sucks.

To be fair pretty sure Mike has admitted that he didn't actually write that song. I think he said he WOULD have liked to have written it because it was so much what he was feeling but pretty sure- and I just checked the songwriting credits and the lyric is attributed to BA Robertson, with music by Rutherford. Its been awhile since I remember that, but its likely that there were other voices involved. The wikipedia entry says that carrack features it live at his shows, so he does get some use out of it. I've read elsewhere that compilation albums are notoriously complex things legally.
Or maybe Mike Rutherford is just a douchebag. But then this guy does say that he just spoke to Mike and everythig was fine, but then that complilation thing could have been a long time ago.

I tried to listen to the Newer version of Mike and The Mechanics but it's not really the same. I keep going back the years with Paul Carreck and Paul Young as the singers.

Not totally convinced that things are "fine" between him and Mike Rutherford..English politeness?

      I wouldn't have thought so, he's a blunt northerner!

I understand he’s desire to want to have his part of these songs he’s sung. Frankly his voice is very soulful and unique.

Sad that Paul did not seem to get as much joy as many of us did with the Mechanics...a great band that original 5 piece group.

I saw Mike and The Mechanics three times with the two Pauls - I'm so glad I saw that band in that incarnation of it because Paul Carrack became the artist I've seen the most. Going out on his own was the best decision that he made because his gigs with his band are masterclasses in musicianship. My wife and I always go and see hime whenever we can.

Paul Carrack with his band tour UK regularly and I went to his show last month in Aberdeen ... also went along pre lockdown in Feb 2020... fabulous band, superb musicians and Paul is great live ... just wonderful ... his solo albums are great and he now does his own thing re releasing music ... all great. He did a great live stream during lockdown which was well worth paying for. P.s. Paul Young was the vocalist for the wonderful Sad Cafe ... really great band. P.p.s. still go to the Mike and Mechanics gigs when they come round ... good band live ... check out the We Can Fly CD ... great album ... CMcG, Aberdeen, Scotland

Paul C is great! Wonderful soulful voice. I’ve got a compilation album of his. Probably the one he refers to. His comments about song rights makes complete sense.

The artists are always the last to figure out that the rights issue is where the money is. It's a pity cuz they do all the work, while suits in seats get the profit. Glad that penny dropped.

He wanted to do something more in his wheelhouse and more self-directed. His story about being denied "The Living Years" for his compilation mirrors the experience of Stevie Nicks, who was likewise denied "Silver Springs" for her compilation. For her as well, it was the final straw that caused her (at least for a time) to leave Fleetwood Mac.

Heart-breaking tale about TLY. Surprised that Mike would have been totally "helpless" to get through the legal redtape but Paul sure is a class act both on stage, in the studio and in "real" life. :-)

Paul looks like Elvis Costello got his chocolate in Ex-Black Sabbath singer Tony Martin’s peanut butter. So to speak.

I saw them open for Tom Petty in Seattle. I loved both Nick and Paul and bought their record from that period which was April 1983.

Absolutely. I just put this comment here and elsewhere on the Prof of Rock's video about Paul C.

    • @davebellamy4867
      @davebellamy4867 ปีที่แล้ว

@@nicolaacbrown1861 Not a silly comment at all. They would have done very well to get Paul after Phil left in 1995. I saw Mike&the Mechanics at Newcastle in 95 and when I heard Phil had left Genesis, he was an obvious choice. Beyond obvious. However, they might not be his musical taste. Especially their more crass late mid 80s to early 90s material.

OMG that was awesome! I founded a band in the 90s called The Blessid Union of Souls and in 1996 we opened on a 6 week tour with Mike & The Mechanics. What awesome people. So many great memories. The band invited us to go to a football game between Sheffield and Man City. And the 2 Pauls sat at separate ends of our seats to keep them separated. They were huge fans of their teams. We got to walk across the pitch while the stadium pa played All I Need Is A Miracle. The next big thing was the crew invited us out to see the Genesis farm where the recorded some of the songs. One barn has all of Phil Collins’ drum kits from over the years. Another building housed all of Mike’s guitar amps and experimental effects. That tour of England, Scotland and Wales was an experience of a lifetime.

Paul Carrack is a fantastic vocalist who elevates everything song he's a part of. Unfortunately it's an old story when artists don't have any rights or access to the work they helped create.
