I absolutely adore when Nintendo sneaks horror elements into their family friendly games. They tend to unsettle me much more than horror genre games, because they're so insanely surreal, out of place, or both!
Kirby, Pokémon, TLO Zelda, even Mario have their fair share of creepy ass sh*t (Metroid isn't considered to be family friendly that's why I didn't mention it but to be honest some TLO Zelda games are also not family friendly)
Honestly some of the scariest moments I can remember have been in Nintendo games, particularly because the otherwise upbeat games do not prepare you for the scary stuff. We all remember our first Windwaker redead... Mix in some surreal character and sound design, and you have _this_ wonderful monstrosity!
I hate/love how it sounds like a human screaming into a glitchy megaphone. I will never get over how terrifying this dude is. 💀 The eel from Mario 64 has been dethroned.
horrorboros is such a cool splat3 character the concept/design, its gimmick, the fact that it's supposed to be scary... easily one of my favorite splat3... characters? bosses? idk but i love 'em
That ain’t cute, it’s like he’s gagging just to start summon the bomb. Horrorborros is struggling to function as a living creatures, he’s suffering by just existing. Him and Shin Godzilla are perfect candidates for therapy.
Fun fact: Horrorboroses are created when a Salmonid swims up against a waterfall for an extended period of time. Don't ask how this lines up with irl biology, but this somehow makes their body...stretch...I guess.
I personally see it as each boss salmonid is the same (or similar, anyway, they're all salmonids yknow) species. Like how you can train specific muscles and stuff in your body for different sports? Like strength training and conditioning. Plus weird freaky ocean water that probably contributes to their biology in some way.
Im pretty sure this is based on a Chinese myth where if a fish successfully swims up a waterfall, it gets turned into a dragon source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longmen_(mythology)
I feel like this comment is implying the waterfall not only stretched out their limbs but their vocal cords, making them look longer and sound gurgled,,, it also explains why they sound so drowned out and distant
This just popped up on my music tab when I was going to play something to sleep to. 10/10 sleep inducing ASMR would listen to the radioactive sea monster again.
These king salmonids have this “the deeper you go they gradually become more and more messed up” kind of vibe that I ABSOLUTELY love in ocean creatures
Nintendo when making a new salmonid boss: “Let’s make a boss that makes the most scariest noises that sounds like it came from the pits of hell to the point that little children are never gonna sleep again in our very colorful game!”
I love how it sounds completely insane and out of its mind, then it starts chucking bombs around with zero sense of self preservation. Really sells this thing as a lunatic creature of the depths as twisted as it’s body can contort.
i love how brave nintendo is when it comes to adding spooky or unsettling things to their games, especially splatoon. from the laughing statues to this, nintendo really isnt afraid to scare the crap out of the younger people in the community
Imagine a Salmon Run DLC where a new infection is discovered and Salmonids are the species that spread the virus , and that leads to more aggressive and distorted Salmonids that commonly make sounds like these
imagine they set up a fishing mini-game, and every now and then you hear them in the distance, and sometimes see 1 scaled 30x rise out of the sea and stare at you.
I hope that since there is no good reason for Salmon run to come back in the next game, that they decide to use all the enemies from it in the main story of whatever the next game is. I would love all the kings to be bosses with reworked mechanics and maybe even updated weapons.
these developers are REALLY holding back from making a straight up horror game. I didn't play through big run and i'm kind of glad since i would've probably been scarred.
