David Fincher's 1992 film is dark and divisive. Following a difficult production, the film reviewed badly and disappointed fans of the more cohesive Alien and Aliens. Over time the film has developed a sympathetic cult following of ardent supporters - but will Nath, Rob, and Dave be among them? Listen to find out!

I love Alien. I love Aliens. And I love this film too, all of them for different reasons. Like you've all said, it's nothing like the rest (as is the 4th too), I treat this quadrilogy as a bunch of separate films that don't really carry much story between them, except Ellen Ripley being the main character.
I love this one for all the grittiness of it, it has a fantastic cast and it's so well acted and so dark in nature. It's certainly not a fun action story, but it feels oppressive, like it should being set in a male-only prison at the arse end of nowhere. The story keeps me hooked throughout though, and I love how she uses the broken android of Bishop to find info about the facehugger in the ship.
Though I will admit the CGI is awful, you can certainly see the issues it had in making it in the CGI, those took the biggest hit. Still, respect to you all for giving it a chance, it's clear that you don't hate it, but didn't necessarily like it, and that's fine!

I feel for Dave and him not seeing this before. So he must've been a little excited after the last one, then has to find out what happened to Newt and Hicks

The Sigourney Weaver story is the gun turret scene from the director’s cut of Aliens! 😆

Isn't Charles dance ...I always figured he was trying to hurt/kill her that's why the alien killed him to protect her, I always interpreted way other characters act towards him is "saying hay she shouldn't fall for his Mr nice guy act he's a bad dude " that's the vibe I get from it .

I could see how the version of this film that had a colony of Monks instead of Rapists could have worked.
The loss of Newt & Hicks could have actually helped that version because you'd have had Ripley dealing with grief & questioning her faith, alongside the Monks doing the same as the Alien picks them off despite their good deeds.
Would have been far more interesting and full of sympathetic characters - and ultimately wouldn't have felt so hateful and unrelentingly bleak, and might have been a more Sci-fi type film, dealing with big themes, rather than being horror, or action, or whatever this third film was trying to be.
But I don't know why there's so much Charles Dance's character in this - maybe it was only in the assembly cut - but isn't he a mass murderer who basically one of the inmates on special privileges in exchange for being the colony doctor - not sure of exact details but it was something like he killed loads of his patients due to going on duty while on drugs - he was sentenced for murdering over 100 people.

According to him and it seems to be the only explanation we get, he was a doctor who killed someone during surgery while high on drugs.

I listened to ID4UK when it was on the Radio and have the Audiobook on cassette
It had Patrick Moore fist fighting an Independence Day alien
But it also had saving the Royal Family as part of it, and I suspect this is why, in "Day after Tomorrow", they make a point of a rescue mission to save the Royal Family fail, on screen.

How to alienate your audience in the first 5-10 minutes - Volume 1. I know this had a troubled production but how anyone approved killing off 2 characters straight away.. The assembly cut is better but the events of
Alien 3 didn't really happen. Hicks and Newt are alive and well and they forced Ripley to experience a VR scenario to see how she'd react.

Yep . . . fuck this film and that stupid Terminator movie that opens with Sarah getting pushed over directly after T2, and young John gets shot as the opener . . . Newt and Hicks off-screen . . . Sarah slightly pushed a bit . . . I don't care about the films after shit like that

Star Wars only has 3 good movies, and I'm still a fan.
The original, Empire, and Rogue One. The other 8 are either terrible, bad, watchable, or mostly okay
