Fantastic video! It also sheds an important light on the fact that wellness activities (whether it be active fitness or breathing meditation) are crucial in developing mastery in musical performance. Body positivity is very important, but we should eventually strive to live healthily if we want to hone our craft! Learned some new tips thanks to your cool knowledge :)
Thank you so much, IcyVolk!! You are absolutely right!! When I was a teenager, I thought living an unhealthy lifestyle and being unhappy was the "artist's way", but now I go to bed at 10:30 after doing yoga!! I am very happy to hear you found this video informative! Thank you for letting me know!
@@MikiShinobue OMG ! I didn;t know that short video was still up. I just bought that contra bass flute (3 feet long and 2 " diameter) about 4 months ago and that was the first time I played it. So excited. It's like a musical prayer.
Thank you so much for commenting and for your input, HeavyD!!! You are an amazing flute and piccolo player, and I would love you to play a shinobue and see how different/same it is compared to flute/piccolo! I would be super interested, and so would many people out there! 😍
Hey Miki! I’ve been doing well with gaining a consistent tone and diaphragmatic breathing, but my issue now is that I can’t seem to breathe out for longer than a few seconds… do you have any recommendations for how to improve breath longevity? Thank you so much!
Hey Chumbles! Can you breathe out for longer than a few seconds when you are NOT playing shinobue? If you cannot, then just practice exhaling slowly so you don't run out of air so quickly. You must use your stomach and back muscles to control the air flow. Practice that daily. Then add shinobue. If the duration of exhalation decreases significantly, most likely your "3 elements" are not met, so you are WASTING the breath instead of your breath going into the shinobue and creating sound. Work on your 3 elements and you will be able to play long phrases. Here is the video about 3 elements. th-cam.com/video/4Bfn0PQlLDM/w-d-xo.html. Also watch my teacher's shinobue position against his lips. Learn how not to waste breath th-cam.com/video/-jEA31vT23U/w-d-xo.html ❤💪
@@MikiShinobue Thank you so much for the advice! I think I just don't have good control over my breath in general, then when you add trying to focus on everything I need to focus on in Shinobue, it makes my air just run out way too fast... 😅 But I will focus on practicing deep breathing every day! Thank you!
@@chumblespuzzspuzz4080 Practicing deep breathing has many benefits outside shinobue as well! It's the same breathing yoga people use, runners, stress reduction people etc. it's good for all of us humans!!! Shinobue is an art form that teaches us the way to live. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
It's not necessary, especially if you have good ears (as in you can play things by ear). If you know music theory, it helps, but there are tons of people who play piano, trumpet, sing etc without reading music at all, and you can play shinobue without reading music at all too. But you will need to understand Hon choshi though, so you can figure out which shinobue to use. This video might be helpful! th-cam.com/video/xGVqE7JZls8/w-d-xo.html
@@MikiShinobue Thank you so much. I'm watching your videos one at a time. I used to play Taiko until Covid..I had a 250 year old Taiko that I just sold..the inside was signed and dated each time the skin was changed. The earliest date was 1772. It was brought over by an antique dealer. I couldn't play it in my garage as it's too loud. Sold it to my friend a local Taiko group. I still have an upright drum tho. Thinking of creating Taiko and flute music.

The diaphragmatic breathing is so important for piccolo playing as well.

Miki - is it necessary to know music theory to learn the Shinobue ? I'm sure it would make things easier....but is it necessary ?
