Vanuatu is an archipelago situated between Fiji and New Caledonia and consists of approximately 20 islands. We’re currently anchored at Port Resolution, Tanna Island one of Vanuatu’s southern islands. Tanna Island is volcanic with an area of approximately 549 square kilometres and is well known for its natural beauty. It is the most fertile island in Vanuatu and produces coffee, copra, and cattle. Popular tourist destinations include visiting the Blue Caves, seeing the world’s largest Bayan tree, and standing at the top of the world’s most accessible active volcano, Mt Yasur.
But first we’d have to survive the trip up to the volcano. The trip was bumpy and uncomfortable, and as you can see, there were a few of us that wanted to see the volcano.
Mt Yasur is 365 m above sea level and has an approximately 400 m wide crater. It is the most accessible active volcano in the world and is said to have been active for at least 800 years since before Captain Cook observed its ash eruptions in 1774. After leaving the island Eromango, Captain Cook continued to sail south to Tanna Island and said that he was "being guided by a great fire we saw upon it." Later realising it "was a Volcano which threw up vast quantities of fire and smoak and made a rumbling noise which was heard at a good distance." After mooring the ship for 10 days in what was deemed a suitable anchorage, Cook named the anchorage Port Resolution after the ship because he said “…as she was the first who ever entered it."
On that note, we’ll leave you to enjoy the raw beauty of Mt Yasur. As always, thank you for watching and see you next Sunday.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------We’re Adam and Vicki. After spending 3 years sailing within New Zealand & preparing for offshore sailing, we sailed our 40 ft sailboat Te Tāiko from New Zealand to Fiji & enjoyed the beauty and tranquility Fiji has to offer. We've now said goodbye to Fiji and have completed our first ocean passage (bluewater crossing) as a couple (only the two of us aboard). We have continued to sail west to our next destination, the beautiful country of Vanuatu.

In December 2021 we moved aboard our sailboat Te Tāiko, a Chico 40. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. We release a new video every Sunday.

Awesome guys. Would have loved to have seen more volcano footage. Maybe next time.?? Is that the one where you offer young virgins as a sacrifice, to the gods.? Asking for a friend. 😂 Hey remember the nanny state you left behind, called Nz.? You wouldn't get away with riding on the back of a truck back home. Now.!! However, when I was young, you could. How times have changed. Anyway guys, thanks again for sharing. Great editing too. All the best from down here.

Being on the crater rim of Mt Yasur, especially in the dark when the crater is glowing and the molten rock plus ash is flying around, makes for a pretty powerful experience. I think it commands a lot of respect! The lack of regulation is in many ways a breath of fresh air. Nice to see people being left to make their own decisions. On Tanna everyone has a machete in hand and even young kids have their own. Kind of like having a mobile phone in kiwiland. Apologies for all the wind noise in the videos we have been having camera issues but we’re getting there! Cheers, Adam and Vicki
