Several years ago, I met Daryle Lamonica in the course of my work. He still looked fit and looked like he could still play for the Raiders. I suggested to him to come out of retirement and improve the Raiders' QB room, that he would be an upgrade over what the Raiders had at the time (before Derek Carr was drafted). He laughed and said that he was done but appreciated the comment. Very gracious and good guy. RIP Mad Bomber.

Lamonica was a tough competitor. Many times he and the Raiders came onto the field in Kansas City (Municipal Stadium or Arrowhead) and led the Raiders against the Chiefs in some of the greatest games in AFL history, then when the two teams joined the NFL his great play continued. As a Chiefs fan, we ALWAYS worried about what Lamonica, Warren Wells, Fred Biletnikoff, Hewritt Dixon and Billy Cannon would do offensively against the Chiefs. He truly belongs in the Pro Football Hall of Fame IMO. Long live the AFL!!!

Those were great days, great games, great teams. The NFL looked down its nose at the AFL until the Jets and the Chiefs taught them some respect.

They didn't call him "Mad Bomber" Lamonica for nothing.

Warren Wells, #81, was the prototypical wide receiver that, considering how weight training and nutrition has improved over the past 50 years, would be a complete beast in today's NFL. And then his successor, Cliff Branch, came along and was a kick ass WR as well.

Even while having a fever, Daryle Lamonica was that dude! I'm not sure if anyone else in the AFL could've been that sick and still shredded the Chargers' pass D.

Amazing as this was, when a fever or migraine breaks, you feel so good in gratitude that I can see someone being loose and performing fantastically

I became a Raiders fan on September 23, 1967. That was the day I watched Daryle Lamonica take his first snap under center as a Raider.
"Full contact sport". Coach Madden once said, if you play one down of professional football your body will never be the same.

I became a Raiders fan during the AFL championship game against the Oilers that December when I saw Lamonica throw those bombs to Warren Wells and Fred Biletnikoff.

When I saw the title of this video, I thought there was a glitch in the Gatrix.
But nope, Lamonica was just so much of a badass that he pulled two similar stunts in the same year.

Lamonica was the definition of a dawg. Greatest QB in raider history. A feat that, given their track record, will never be broken. RIP to our OAKLAND RAIDERS Mad Bomber

@JerseyDevilGMan Ken had 4 years he had more TDs than INTs in silver and black, 3 with Plunkett. No 30 TD seasons outta them, tho that's a messed up number to judge 70s QBs by Daryle still had 2 of em. We had good team success but they weren't close to Daryle

@@ShrexyGuy then who can ever forget those two great Raider QB's Todd Marinovich & JaMarcus Russell. Those two cursed 🤬 the Davis family!

Note: I believe the clip indicated only one team from each AFL division got into the playoffs. This is incorrect. In 1969, two teams from each AFL division that made the playoffs. That year, the Raiders played the Oilers and the Jets played the Chiefs in the first round before Oakland and Kansas City met for the League Championship.

      @OfficialJaguarGator9  ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think I said two in the script. I said it was unfair that two teams made it from each division but that was rigid, because the AFL West was so much superior to the East, as the East was a joke aside from the Jets

This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about how Steelers DE Dwight White had a terrific game in Super Bowl 9 after having the flu and losing about 18 pounds in the week leading up to the game.

This unofficial JG9 historian is here to bring up the video on your JG8 channel about a young man who got into a horrible car accident but still managed to play in the game. I'm high and lazy right now, so I'm not able to get into specifics at the moment.

Everytime I see Lamonica I just think "that's the guy who kept Stabler on the sidelines all them years." 😂 But he got them to all them Championship games so, oh well. And I couldn't find any stickum on Biletnikoff's socks? Maybe that came in the 70's.

In 1968, all but two teams (FB & KC) would be playing in their first Super Bowl (aka NFL-AFL Champ Game). As it turned out, SB II was GB's second.

Hadl had a 22.2 QB rating in that game, another game that was worse than spiking the ball on every play.
Nevertheless, Lamonica was a true dawg having won two games after coming out of hospital beds...he was the epitome of a Raider...may he rest.

Kind of puts things in perspective. Not trying to take anything away from Michael Jordan but without the marketing machine behind him, his feats would be seen as just another day to most people. That's why I don't buy into anything the marketing machine tries to push about modern day players in the NFL. I know what they're doing and it doesn't impress me. Back in the day, they didn't have that and just handled their business like Lamonica did. No endless praise by the 24/7 sports media. Just put your head down and went to work because that's what you're supposed to do. RIP Mad Bomber Daryle Lamonica.

  • @robertsettle2590

Most QB'S playing today wouldn't last at all back then. Quarterbacks back then were team players, they would have to be near death or immobilized for them not to take the field and lead their teams. Lamar Jackson & Kyler Murray are prime examples of this kind QB. Those two and some of the other players in the league, like tyreek hill can't even wear "The Mad Bomber or The Snake" jockstraps!
