Jersey Girl here! I was downtown Newark over the weekend and one of the vendors was playing this! I had not heard this in YEARS! I stopped dead in my tracks! Thankfully he was selling a mix tape with this on it.....I copped it of course!
WOW , Does this bring back great memories, I use to sing in the talent shows in EO at Martin Stadium with them , Great Brothers and sisters , had a lot laughs. EO was truly a magical place then. All the talent back then. Folks were still singing on street corners. This group was just Amazing.
Heard this on WHUR , Howard University , Washington DC during the day (not Quiet Storm !) some years back in the early 2000's.....not afraid to mix in a timeless 'classic' with whatever was on the airways at the time......SLAVE did a concert at Martin Stadium , NJ , late '70s (1978 ?)
This Group I am proud to say , came from my EOHS NJ. Lead vocals 1st Tenor James Perry, singing Lead Hazel King, and Tommy Harrington RIP.....East Orange had so much vocal talent, we could of been another Motown.
Wow love this song , use to hear it on the radio at night WWRL1600 AM NEW YORK and WNJR 1430 AM NEWARK NJ great memories I would do my art work by these great tunes , painting and drawings for my college art classes
I went to high school with the lead singer James Perry. He had a mean Tenor and could sing his ass off. Don't know where he is today, hey James if you read this I still Love you and that voice of yours hope you are still singing. Thanks for posting jayhawk2099 brings back sweet memories.
I had both “Thank You” and "We're Not Getting Any Younger" by Kaleidoscope and they were both among my favorite Philly produced mellow sounds (though the group itself was from East Orange, New Jersey). As a matter of fact, I once was part of a DJ Training School called Kaleidoscope in NYC and blew their minds when I put "Thank You" on the turntable! Thank you Tommy Harrington, Hazel King Moore, James Perry, Sylvia Walker and especially Derrick "Derky" Culler for not only the music but your informative comments below!
Ah the group called Kaleidoscope Actually Started as the first of January. Were managed by Loyd Dowdell who used to live on Grove st in East Orange NJ. I had taken them down to Philly a couple of times to meet with Norm Harris. I am still friends and keep in touch with some of them, and if anyone is interested in getting a copy of song on cd let me know.
My soul music mentor told me 12 years ago that this was the most beautiful song he ever heard. I never forgot the name of the song or group in 12 years. Tonight was the first time I’ve ever heard it. Thank you Perry Green.
Swedish knits,oh my goodness. I haven't heard anyone speak about those for ages😊well I might as well add in shark skins, tear drops and playboys...what an incredible era.
@@melvinpruitt3907 Alpaca knits - Sigallo , Kangol hats BEFORE they said "Kangol" on the outside , alligator shoes - Mauri (Detroit stand up !!) , Delancey st. NYC , 3 stripe Pro-Keds , DC hats
I have been looking for this song for quite sometime now ! Omg brings back memories of singing this song with my mom who is no longer here. Thanks so much for this post !
I was born and raised in Newark although I reside in Irvington I don't know it's just something about this music I mean I came up in the 60s 70s 80s you know and I just love this music and I'm just so glad that y'all appreciate it just as much as I do
+ravingshavers No Disrespect To Your Intellect....But It Was Produced And Arranged By Guitarist Norman Harris. One Would Think That This Selection Was Produced By Maybe Bobby Martin.
Sounds like WNJR-AM 1430 was the bomb. I bought this record in 1975, but first heard it by a group called Joy back in early '73 on WDAO-FM in Dayton, OH. I have both records. For a long while I've believed that Joy and Kaleidoscope were the same group. Beautiful song.
Main Lyrics I thank the day you came my way Lonely was my life from day to day I'll never make you cry If I do, I would surely die Thank you For the love you gave to me I'll be there Like a leaf that's on a tree I thank you No mountain's too hard to climb Forever I'll be right there by your side I swear to you You're the sun up in the sky I shine from the twinkle in your eye You are the pot of gold I've been searching for For so long Thank you For the love you gave to me I'll be there Like a leaf that's on a tree I thank you No mountain's too hard to climb Forever I'll be right there by your side I swear to you Oh, I thank you Thank you I'll never make you cry If I do, I would surely die Thank you For the love you gave to me I'll be right there Like a leaf that's on a tree I thank you No mountain's too hard to climb Forever I'll be right there by your side I swear to you Thank you Thank you Thank you I'm gonna be there right by your side Through thick and thin I know baby And I'm not gonna ever ... (?)
This is without a doubt one of the greatest love songs ever. This group KILLED it back in the day. Remember when they were called First of January and did that song "Sugar Frosted Love"? They were some bad mo'fo's!
Another one of those groups who changed names.Like the Presidents 5 10 15 20 25 years of love... Became a group by the name of Anacostia or Anacosta? With a tune called (on and off).
You are the first person that has ever mentioned Joy. I bought this by Joy back in January 1973. Still have it. I discovered Kaleidoscope's version in a record shop in 1975. It never played on radio in Dayton-Columbus, OH, but Joy played briefly on WDAO-FM in Dayton in January 1973...reason I bought it.
i remember this from back in 1975. when i was in grammer school my sisters and i use dance to this song every time it came on the radio . it's a shame it didn't become a hit , because it's such a beautiful song. this song and group are nowhere to be found in any R&B chart books.another group by the same name appears on the pop charts.
this is really wonderful and beautiful...something that u dont hear everyday and everywhere these days...i faved this one...thank u for sharing this beautiful song****HUGS****yayiemai
Yup! They performed live that Summer at a Stadium in East Orange too, opening up for Peter Brown whose huge that year was "Do Ya Wanna Get Funky Wit Me". One of the members Derrick (Dirky) Culler was married to my cousin and had 3 children with her. He later became a Producer\Songwriter in his own right. One of his hits was sung by none other than Jermaine Jackson himself named "Don't Take it Personal".
Brought me back to my Spring time and my college years when life was so simple,,,all I had to do was study hard and pass my exams and make the Deans list.
Now I realise that Norman Harris is credited with its arrangement but it has Thom Bell/Bobby Martin's fingerprints all over it. Could've been written for Blue Magic and even has a transition that sounds very similar to on e in Born On Halloween. I'm convinced that they simply used the original backing track as the arrangement is exactly the same, re-recording the vocal tracks. Fantastic tune :-)
Let's not forget Ron Baker-Norman Harris and Earl Young played on everything out of Philly, not to mention MFSB, so even on Thom Bell and Bobby Martin's productions you are going to hear Baker-Harris-Young. And, by the way, Earl Young is the same drummer who gave disco the high-hat sound and is a member of The Trammps! If the music on "Thank You" reminds you of the sound you hear on Blue Magic cuts, check out Kaleidoscope's "We're Not Getting Any Younger"!
This song was originally done by a band called Joy in 1972, but it was covered three years later by an unknown group called Kaleidoscope. If you haven't heard the original, take a good listen. th-cam.com/video/5eb2qaVsHtQ/w-d-xo.html
Would you please ask if anyone in the group knew of the group called Joy who also did this about early '73. I have that record and Kaleidoscope's version. Same producers on both. It's been killing me for years. Seems no one knows of the the group Joy that did this song first.
In the same class as Blue Magic. Kaleidoscope was very underrated. This song is amazing.
(((((((2024 Still Listening 🎶)))))))
Jersey Girl here! I was downtown Newark over the weekend and one of the vendors was playing this! I had not heard this in YEARS! I stopped dead in my tracks! Thankfully he was selling a mix tape with this on it.....I copped it of course!

Well if you like this, check them out under a different name called the (first of January). The song is called-Sugar frosted love.
Pot of gold I been searching for
Main Lyrics
I thank the day you came my way
Lonely was my life from day to day
I'll never make you cry
If I do, I would surely die
Thank you
For the love you gave to me
I'll be there
Like a leaf that's on a tree
I thank you
No mountain's too hard to climb
Forever
I'll be right there by your side
I swear to you
You're the sun up in the sky
I shine from the twinkle in your eye
You are the pot of gold
I've been searching for
For so long
Thank you
For the love you gave to me
I'll be there
Like a leaf that's on a tree
I thank you
No mountain's too hard to climb
Forever
I'll be right there by your side
I swear to you
Oh, I thank you
Thank you
I'll never make you cry
If I do, I would surely die
Thank you
For the love you gave to me
I'll be right there
Like a leaf that's on a tree
I thank you
No mountain's too hard to climb
Forever
I'll be right there by your side
I swear to you
Thank you
Thank you
Thank you
I'm gonna be there right by your side
Through thick and thin
I know baby
And I'm not gonna ever ... (?)
